TIGERS’ STAGGERING EARLY ASK FOR CLUB CHAMPIONFox Sports
October 10th, 2024Richmond initially asked for Gold Coast’s two early first-round picks in negotiations over Daniel Rioli.
Nine’s Tom Morris reports the Tigers’ intital price for their 2024 best and fairest winner was picks 6 and 13.
It would have been one of the priciest trades in modern footy history had Gold Coast accepted it, well ahead of deals like Adam Cerra to Carlton (for pick 6 and a future third), Tim Taranto to Richmond (for picks 12 and 19) and Izak Rankine to Adelaide (for pick 5 with late swaps).
It would have arguably surpassed the price for Jeremy Cameron’s move to Geelong, which cost the Cats picks 13, 15, 20 and a future fourth with two future seconds coming back.
“The Gold Coast Suns understandably said no in what was probably a Hail Mary from the Tigers,” Morris said on Nine News.
Pick 6 is still expected to make up the core of the deal for the Tigers halfback, who will turn 28 in April.
The Suns’ picks don’t hold as much value as other selections because they have so many early picks, and it’s well-known they need to trade picks out to avoid them being consumed when the club matches a bid for academy product Leo Lombard in the middle of the first round.
