Rioli has committed for the 2022 season.

A triple-premiership forward, Rioli made the transition to defence in the second half of this season, looking at home in his new role.

The 24-year-old averaged 20.5 disposals at 85% efficiency across the final six matches of the season to go with four marks, two inside-50s and 2.5 tackles per game.

Rioli has played 114 games for the Tigers since being selected with Richmond’s first pick No. 15 overall at the 2015 AFL National Draft.

Richmond General Manager- Football Talent, Blair Hartley:

“Daniel really impressed in a new role as a running defender this year, which is a credit to his application and work ethic,” he said.

“Already, he has achieved a lot in his AFL career, and we are excited to see what more the future holds for him.

Revisiting what the pundits were saying about Dan Rioli prior to us drafting him. Twomey was on the money predicting us to draft Dan with pick 15.

North Ballarat Rebels coach at the time, David Loader’s assessment of Rioli

“Attributes-wise, he's got the pretty complete package for a player of his size. He’s got exceptional speed, he’s got very, very good endurance, he’s got terrific agility, but he’s also a very, very good kick – distance and accuracy – and he’s got a great weighted kick for a player that’s not a big guy.”

AFL Media’s Callum Twomey’s phantom draft Rioli prediction – to Richmond at pick 15

“Given his surname, clubs had already been watching Rioli closely throughout the season. But Rioli really sprang up the draft order with his finish to the year, when he kicked four goals in a TAC Cup final, was among the best players in the Grand Final day curtain-raiser for the Allies, and then tested exceptionally well over the week at the draft combine. There he underlined his elite mix of speed and endurance, which made clubs look even harder at him as a possible top-20 pick. The Tigers are in need of a crafty small forward and Rioli fits that bill.”

Aussie Rules Draft Central’s Rioli draft profile

“He is a human highlights reel that can win a game off his boot in one quarter . . .

Consistency is the biggest question mark over Daniel, but he is a high reward for a club that can untap his potential.

Daniel is super quick, has great ability, a nous for the impossible and a good judge of the ball in flight and the bounce of the ball.

He will need to improve his consistency as well as bulk up a little and continue to work on his defensive game . . .

His highlights will be bordering from the unbelievable to the impossible and everything in between.

However, can he develop to become that midfielder/forward who is renowned for his defensive pressure as much as his highlights?

If he becomes a four-quarter player, Rioli could be anything. The fact he can play a quarter and still put his hand up for best on ground, speaks volumes of his ability.

Of all the players in the draft, Rioli will have the most interest over where he is selected. Could his ability to drift in and out of games have an impact, or will his ability to turn a game on its head and be a matchwinner, sway the recruiters?

In all likelihood, Rioli is a second-round pick. On form, he is probably a third-round pick; on potential he is easily a first-round pick.

Balancing the two factors, a second-round pick seems about right. But with the right guidance and development, Rioli could become an exceptional player . . .

One thing is for sure, regardless of where he ends up, Daniel Rioli will be a player every fan watches with interest.”

Players under pressure in 2022

Dan Rioli

While in 2019 his goalkicking tally of 17 was softened by the fact he also booted 19 behinds, 2020 was a rough slog for the small forward as the goals began to dry up, with him managing just 12 (three behinds) from 18 games. His papers at Richmond looked stamped for much of 2021 before a move to the backline in Round 17 saw his numbers spike dramatically. He looked assured and crafty as a halfback for the remainder of the season and secured a one-year deal. The challenge for Rioli now is dealing with what will likely be increased attention given rival coaches have had an off-season to adapt to and prepare for Rioli’s new role, similar to how Brad Hill’s move to halfback reaped immediate rewards but may now be more heavily scrutinised. Rioli will turn 25 this year and, by season’s end, we’ll know whether the halfback role is a genuinely sustainable one for the former Pick 15. That, coupled with the club’s list starting to undergo some significant changes, will likely play a big part in how Rioli assesses his future at the end of this year.

Easily Dan Rioli's best game since his shift to half-back.

21 disposals (17k, 4h, 7c, 14u, 81% eff.)
8 marks ( 1 contested)
4 tackles
2 inside 50s
8 intercepts
477 metres gained
3 score involvements
1 goal assist
82% time on ground

Good game from Dan, still not sure what his longer term future is though.

Mansell is wasted in the seconds I think but admittedly Dan's kicking was clean as.

Very good yesterday

Think he was helped by being on Bobby Hill who was very poor for the Giants. People are critical of our small forwards defensive pressure but yesterday it was non existent with Hill. Refused to chase Daniel a few times early in the game which seemed to give Daniel confidence to break the lines from HB

Flogged Hill. They isolated him deep on a few occasions and Rioli stood up massively defensively. Played well

Yep im not a fan but had a decent game.
Still dont see why we cannot try him on a wing which would allow us to get games into Mansell.

Lol not my fault we draft a whole pile of defenders and then leave em to rot in the maggoos while we give their spots to other non defenders.

Even the two current incumbent wingers were more h/b than wingers.

As i stated we need to find ways to get games into other players a few positional changes allows this. Dont do it and imo too many younger players won't be getting needed games and the chasm will widen between vets and inexperienced players.

The last time i looked all of the following can play in the backline.

McIntosh, Broad, Pickett, Ralphsmith, Stack, Short, Mansell, Vlastuin, Rioli, Banks, Brown. Plus the need to get games into Miller and Gibcus. The only way we can do it is by shuffling a few around.

Why did we throw Rioli back when we had Mansell and Stack doing so well there. Why play Hugo back there when we drafted him as a fwd/mid ffs lets take it a step further why the hell did we draft Banks and Brown when there clearly is not a position for them the way we are going about it.

We have to find a way to get games into our kids in their right positions.

One win and suddenly it seems there is no need for development of good kids in the seniors.

There is no reason why Pickett cannot play mid and Ralphsmith roles up. Broad roles up to allow Miller a game. FMD broad would be huge and a better option than McIntosh. Rioli is an option to role up to a wing or have him start on the bench rotating wing.

Bottom line is im looking for ways for us to get games into more of the kids.

Tiger delays talks

Paddy Grinlay
zerohanger.com
7 April 2022

Meanwhile, another newly minted backman, three-time premiership Tiger Daniel Rioli, has put off talks until the end of the 2022 season.

Speaking to AFL.com, Rioli's manager Ralph Carr said he was "thrilled" with Rioli's progress this year, which has seen the 2017 first-round pick lock himself away a position in Richmond's defence.

"I think Daniel's having a great year and Daniel wants to address it later in the year," Carr said.

After being dropped numerous times from the Tigers' side, Rioli was swung from the forward pocket to the half-back line by Damien Hardwick to good effect - replacing the retired Bachar Houli in that position.

He was given a one-year contract last season after a promising finish to an otherwise disappointing 2021 campaign.

Rioli has played every game this season for the Tigers.
