Richmond is looking to secure Swans ruckman Toby Nankervis

RICHMOND is looking to secure Sydney ruckman Toby Nankervis, who is weighing up whether to seek a trade.

The Tigers are set to lose Tyrone Vickery to free agency and have identified Nankervis, 22, as a player who can bolster the club’s ruck division.

The Swans, however, are keen to retain Nankervis and have been in discussions with his management.

Nankervis is third or fourth in line at Sydney for rucks, sitting behind Kurt Tippett and Sam Naismith and possibly Callum Sinclair. Tippett returned to the side for the preliminary final, which saw Nankervis dropped.

The Swans believe other clubs also hold an interest in Nankervis, who played seven games in 2016 and is one of four out of contract Sydney players whose futures are yet to be determined.

Talented midfielder Tom Mitchell is the standout of the four uncontracted Swans.

Dean Towers and Xavier Richards are the others without a contract for 2017, as the Swans deal with a tight salary cap that will make it difficult for them to acquire any significant seasoned player during the trade period.

The Tigers’ interest in Nankervis is despite their recontracting of veteran follower Ivan Maric, who has been retained as a form of insurance and to assist younger players in a mentoring role.

Richmond has been watching Nankervis closely in the NEAFL and believe he has some capability of pinch hitting as a forward.

Better than Vickery had we persisted with him in the ruck?
Seems like a musical chairs play to me
“I find it nearly impossible to make those judgments, but he is certainly up there with the really important ones, he is certainly up there with the Francis Bourkes and the Royce Harts and the Kevin Bartlett and the Kevin Sheedys, there is no doubt about that,” Balme said.

Do we need a ruck? With our best list in last 7 years why would we need one?

Jumped in front of Tom Derickx and the injury-prone Sam Naismith to become the club’s third ruck option last season and showed in five senior appearances that he’s one to watch for the future. Not overly mobile but hard working, Nankervis will find senior games tough to come by this year, but forms part of a strong group of big men giving the Swans depth in their ruck stocks. Dominated at NEAFL level and another season working alongside Kurt Tippett will be of great benefit.

Translation: marginally less of a poo truck than Derickx, slower than treacle but trains well.

Sydney Swans ruckman Toby Nankervis is expected to decide this week whether he wants a trade after not being able to cement a senior spot despite good performances in 12 matches with the club.

Richmond appears to be in the box seat as it looks for back-up to Shaun Hampson while the Western Bulldogs are understood to have shown some interest in the 22-year-old.

A back up to Hampson!
Wowee! Now there's a wrap if I've ever heard one.

Nankervis is already better than Hampson. The club just doesn't want to publicise it.
OER. Calling it as it is since 2004.
