Nankervis played all 23 games for Richmond this season, averaging 17.1 disposals, 4.0 clearances, 4.6 score involvements, 3.7 tackles, 27.2 hit-outs, 3.7 one-percenters and 185.1 metres gained per match.

He had the most disposals and hit-outs of his AFL career and was ranked fourth in the competition for total hit-outs.

“I think I had a pretty consistent year,” Nankervis said.

“Managed to play every game, which I hadn’t done for a few years . . . and stay injury-free, which was nice.”

Nankervis was the Tigers’ sole skipper for the last four games of their 2022 campaign due to Grimes being sidelined with a hamstring injury.

“Not having him there, game day, I was a little bit uneasy about it. But again, I think I’m really proud of my growth in that area and I was able to deal with it pretty well,” Nankervis said.

“Definitely a lot of learnings taken out.”

Co-captain Nank at the B&F:

“We believe we have a strong foundation and have set a standard that will allow us to compete in every game we play, based simply on effort, intent and a desperate edge to always be in the fight.

“We are clear on the direction we want to go. We want to be a side that consistently challenges for premierships.

“While I can’t promise premierships, I can promise this – we will come back ready, we will continue to care, challenge and support each other. We will make sacrifices because we’re all in.

“We are determined to be better. We will be relentless and consistent.

“Tonight, we put a close on season 2022. I leave proud, but not satisfied.

“I have even more confidence in this group, and more hunger for what lies ahead.

“We are better prepared than ever before for season 2023.”

Ruckman Sam Naismith was delisted by the Sydney Swans today.
Never forget they preferred him to Toby Nankervis back in 2016.
Sliding doors right there.
Thanks Sydney.

When your only 199cm and don't have a leap, to compete you have to push the boundary a bit. Still maintain his value is not winning ruck contests but halving as many as possible and then doing what he does when the ball is on the ground.

Probably one of our worst contributors against Melbourne and we all know how bad his game was against Brisbane in that final.

I’m a huge fan of Nank but he needs to get back to what makes him valuable to our team.

How he played against Melbourne was not a great sign and I hope he is able to adapt his game to find how to best handle the better technical ruckman in the league.

“Hard to watch”: Tigers skipper speaks on pre-season loss, depth

“We watched watch the tape and it was hard to watch … I think we need to get a lot better.”

Toby Nankervis is confident his Richmond side will go into Thursday night's season opener firing after a strong pre-season, despite their 50-point practice match loss to Melbourne.

The Tigers welcomed a two big name recruits in 2022 and look primed to impress this season, with Nankervis welcoming the competition for spots as the season approaches.

Speaking to Zero Hanger, the Richmond co-captain revealed that he felt in great shape after a full pre-season, as is the wider team.

"Body's good. I think I've had a full pre-season," Nankervis said at Captain's Day.

"In as good as a spot as I can be and looking forward to testing myself out against good opposition next week.

"The team is in good shape and that's something we've probably got, good depth this year.

"Selection will be tough I reckon for the coaches."

Richmond welcomed former Giants Tim Taranto and Jacob Hopper in last year's trade period, while young recruit Tylar Young is looming as a potential Round 1 debutant.

The Tigers were downed by Melbourne last weekend in a practice match at Casey Fields, overrun by the speedy Demons in the first half.

As their last official hitout before their Round 1 clash, the co-captain admitted it gave the side plenty to learn from.

"We've got a lot to learn from our practice match against Melbourne last week and I'm sure the boys who are training today will do some work on that and we'll be ready to go," Nankervis said.

"I don't think it was a great performance in general, a lot of thing we didn't do well enough and we watched the tape and it was hard to watch and I think we need to get a lot better.

"The good thing is we've got a week to get that right."

Besides his pressure around the contest I thought his output on Thursday night was poor.

1 mark is unacceptable and his disposal efficiency was woeful.

Really needs the be better.

Nank so far has the second most hitouts (74) in the AFL, is sixth in tackles (15), and out of all the ruckmen has the third most clearances (11).

Love the Nank but he really needs to nail those crucial marks down the line. Marks like these are extremely important as well as those in the last line of defence.

Nank should be watching how Brisbanes rucks are dominating clearance and hits to advantage have the FlagPies at sea.

Nankervis has recently been his worst version of himself when he should’ve absolutely dominated but failed both times to take absolute advantage of a very advantageous scenario.

He also doesn’t offer himself enough as a a legitimate marking option down the line to open up play.
