Reports of a nasty head clash b/w Young and Smith at training this morning. No confirmation yet of any damage/injury (broken jaw to Young?).

Tigers take things up a notch

Richmond took its pre-season up a notch on Thursday with a match simulation at the Swinburne Centre.

The Tigers put their pre-season focuses into practice during two 20-minute halves, with a few VFL-listed players also taking part. The group was divided into two teams, one side wearing black and the other in white.

There was much to like about the contested hit-out, the team gelling well as they showed an exciting glimpse into the season ahead.

Veteran Tiger Trent Cotchin starred as he booted four goals and marked strongly inside-50, while Jack Riewoldt kicked two.

Superstar Dustin Martin also hit the scoreboard, showcasing his damaging form following a full pre-season.

Assistant coach Andrew McQualter said the decorated Tiger was "in a great spot".

"We're rapt that he's been able to do all the training this pre-season," McQualter said.

"He hasn't really missed a session at all, so hopefully it's a really exciting year ahead for him."

New Tiger Tim Taranto showed exactly why he was brought to the Club, moving seamlessly through the midfield. He also found the big sticks, and worked in tandem with fellow recruit and former GWS teammate Jacob Hopper.

"They're very good, strong, contest players, first-possession players," McQualter said.

Rebounding defender Daniel Rioli was impactful through his dash off half-back, while wingman Marlion Pickett was a solid contributor throughout.

Excitement machine Shai Bolton displayed his trademark silky skills and high-flying athleticism, and down back, Dylan Grimes and Nick Vlastuin were pillars in defence.

Judson Clarke slotted the first goal of the day and had a hand in others, while fellow youngster Hugo Ralphsmith exhibited his hard running.

Key forward Tom Lynch missed the hit-out as he builds up his workload following plantar fasciitis surgery in December.

"He's really building up his running and within the next few weeks, he'll be back into training and be in good shape," McQualter said.

Vlastuin returns, Martin makes statement in Tigers’ intra-club clash

Triple-premiership defender Nick Vlastuin may have overcome a rib injury, but he faced as tough a pre-season challenge as possible when matched up on Dustin Martin during Richmond’s intra-club match on Monday.

Vlastuin had spent time away from contact training, having fractured a rib at training earlier this month, but he recovered quickly and his run and carry were on show in a spirited clash of more than an hour at Punt Rd where senior AFL umpires took charge.

While co-captain Dylan Grimes had bulk minutes on Martin, Vlastuin had spells on a man who has been in mint condition through the summer. Martin has dispelled any fears his interest in the game – and the Tigers – had waned. There had been suggestions last year Martin was considering a shift to Sydney, and linking with the Swans.

Martin finished with two goals on Monday, his first coming after a strong pack mark in front of Vlastuin, and his second from a clever snap in front of goal. He missed a set shot for a third he typically would have converted.

Vlastuin and Martin, the latter the only man to claim three Norm Smith Medals, will be central figures in the Tigers’ bid to return to premiership contention, having been beaten in the opening week of the finals last year.

The Tigers have privately been delighted with Martin this pre-season, for he has barely missed a session, and appears set to again be a consistent threat. While acknowledging that at 31 he may no longer be the dominant midfield threat he once was, the Tigers believe he can create havoc forward of centre and inside attacking 50, particularly when left one-out with his opponent.

Jack Dyer medallist Tom Lynch is on the mend from plantar fasciitis surgery in December and did not take to the field.

“He’s really building up his running and within the next few weeks. He’ll be back into training and be in good shape,” Tigers assistant coach Andrew McQualter said.

Lynch, the Tigers’ best forward, booted 63 goals in 19 matches this season, averaging 3.2 contested marks per game.

Veteran Jack Riewoldt was busy up forward, while co-captain Toby Nankervis pushed forward when the opportunity arose. Noah Balta, who spent time up forward last season, was used in his customary role in defence.

Former Greater Western Sydney pair Tim Taranto and Jacob Hopper were in the same side and looked smooth through the midfield, having spells at centre bounces.

Quinton Narkle, the former Cat hoping to force his way onto the Tigers list as a supplemental selection, found plenty of the ball. Narkle’s dash has never been questioned, but his consistency has been an issue. He was in good touch across half-back and through the midfield, and pushed forward when the opportunity arose. He is keen to make a splash if given a second chance.

Premiership pair Liam Baker and Shai Bolton, the latter arguably the Tigers’ most dynamic match-winner, had a good battle.

Former skipper Trent Cotchin was busy at half-forward and pushing through the midfield.

Mega pre-season update on every AFL club

RICHMOND

Positional changes:
Maurice Rioli Jr had been a standout on the training track over the pre-season and was likely to spend more time up the field as the Richmond coaches work with him to increase his scoreboard impact. After a slight decrease in midfield minutes last year, it seems superstar Dustin Martin will spend even more time forward in 2023 following Richmond’s recent acquisitions of Jacob Hopper and Tim Taranto, as well as the emergence of Shai Bolton and Jayden Short last year.

Who’s ‘flying’ on the track:
Jacob Hopper and Tim Taranto have made brilliant first impressions at Punt Road, both catching the eye in recent match simulation in on-ball roles. Taranto also won the club’s 2km time trials either side of Christmas, while Hopper has banked a strong pre-season after an injury-interrupted 2022 season restricted him to seven games. Richmond recruit Jacob Hopper is close to full fitness after a 2022 season that was ruined by a persistent knee injury. Elsewhere, Bigoa Nyuon had also impressed in training and could contend for a spot in the back six with Josh Gibcus sidelined with a hamstring injury

Injury watch:
Star forward Tom Lynch has been training away from the main group, but is expected to return full training later in the pre-season as he continues to recover form foot surgery before Christmas. Young defender Josh Gibcus is set to miss the first month of the season at least after undergoing surgery on his hamstring injury.
