RICHMOND appears to have finally secured the signature of superstar midfielder Dustin Martin, with the Brownlow Medal favourite set to commit to the club for the next seven years in the richest deal in the club's history.

AFL.com.au was told by North Melbourne on Thursday it was out of the race for Martin's signature.

Martin flew to New Zealand this week to visit his father Shane as a final step in deciding whether to stay with Richmond or cross to the Kangaroos on a more lucrative deal.

The 26-year-old was weighing up a seven-year deal worth around $1.1m a season with the Tigers, or the Kangaroos' offer for $1.5m a year over the same duration.

But on Thursday the Tigers were reported to have upped that offer to $1.3 million a season.

Martin's blockbuster signing ends one of the long-running sagas of the 2017 season that started when the midfielder announced through his management in January he would not be deciding on his future until the end of the season.

A restricted free agent, Martin made it known he wanted to spend the season considering his options, and his manager Ralph Carr has stood firm in not finalising any deal until now.

Martin has put the raging speculation on his future to the side to produce a career-best season that should see him rewarded with a second consecutive Jack Dyer Medal as the Tigers' club champion.

He is also the shortest priced Brownlow Medal favourite in history after main rival Patrick Dangerfield was ruled ineligible, and he leads most main media awards.

The 25-year-old's contract negotiations have been handled this season by his manager Carr and the Tigers' list manager Dan Richardson and football boss Neil Balme.

For more than seven months the group has remained tight-lipped on the state of those negotiations as clubs – most notably North Melbourne – were linked to the explosive midfielder.

Speculation about his future reached fever pitch this week as he flew to New Zealand before returning for Wednesday night's All Australian dinner, where he was tight-lipped.

North Melbourne was an aggressive bidder for both Martin and GWS midfielder Josh Kelly, and the club was reportedly in a position to offer Martin approximately $2m more than the Tigers over the course of seven years.   

But Martin spurned that offer to stay at Punt Road Oval in a deal that is likely to see him finish his career with the club that drafted him with pick No.3 in the 2009 NAB AFL Draft.

He has produced a magnificent season that has seen him win 40 possessions in a game twice and average career-high inside 50s (6.2), clearances (6.5) and contested possessions (14.2).

With every starring performance this season his value has grown, forcing Richmond to improve its offer as rivals circled.

Ultimately, however, Martin to remain loyal to the Tigers, who have worked overtime to facilitate regular trips to New Zealand for Martin to visit his deported father.

As coach Damien Hardwick said at the start of the season: "Dustin’s been a great player for the Richmond footy club and the Richmond footy club’s been great for Dustin".

FOOTBALL’S hottest property is off the market after raging Brownlow Medal favourite Dustin Martin last night agreed to an $8 million deal to stay at Punt Rd.

Martin has sacrificed around $3 million to stay a Tiger for life after ending year-long speculation about his future.

His management late today told North Melbourne he was staying with Richmond, turning his back on a deal worth almost $11 million to join the Kangaroos.

North’s uber offer was the richest in AFL history, outstripping the $10m that levered Lance Franklin out of Hawthorn and into Sydney colours.

The new seven-year deal ties him to Punt Rd until the end of 2024.

The Tigers fought back against the massive North Melbourne play with late financial sweeteners.

Suggestions yesterday of a deal worth $1.3 million a year were off the mark, according to sources.

Martin made the decision after visiting his father in New Zealand this week. Shane Martin has been banned from Australia because of his alleged bikie links despite never being charged.

It’s understood that Shane was worried about his son and wanted to get him the best possible deal because AFL careers are so short.

Martin has been in blistering form this year despite his prolonged contract talks.

It is understood Richmond’s initial offer was around $800,000 so his manager Ralph Carr has done an excellent job increasing his client’s payday.

Dustin Martin to stay at Richmond until 2024

Dustin Martin has finally committed to Richmond with an eve-of-finals agreement which has tied him to the club until 2024.

The 26-year-old Brownlow favourite met a Tigers contingent led by chief executive Brendon Gale late on Thursday at the Hawthorn home of his manager Ralph Carr. Football lieutenant Daniel Richardson joined Gale at the pivotal meeting.

In a scenario reflective of a week dominated by the very public question mark over Martin's future, television broadcast vans were parked outside Carr's house as the meeting took place.

The Kangaroos, who had made a board-led mammoth offer to Martin, had been cautiously optimistic that the star player would come to North but that optimism began to wane on Wednesday before the All-Australian function where Martin received his second successive national blazer.

The North Melbourne view was that Martin's exiled bikie father Shane had been keen for him to cross to the Kangaroos. But a conversation between father and son on Wednesday is understood to have seen Martin communicate that he planned to remain at Richmond.

By late Thursday the Kangaroos were certain Martin would remain at Richmond. Despite reports to the contrary the Martin camp were not considering any other genuine offers in recent weeks. Suggestions that St Kilda had entered the negotiation with a late bid have been denied by the Saints who last met Carr before the start of the 2017 season.

Richmond had insisted their improved offer of a seven-year deal worth an annual $1.1 million was its final bid and that the club would have farewelled Martin with its blessing had he rejected it for North's potential contract estimated at closer to $1.5 million a year over seven years.

The latter bid would have seen Martin by some stretch the AFL's highest paid player. As it is the Tigers will face some challenges in controlling their total player payments over the coming years should their current team continue to flourish.

All-Australian captain Alex Rance signed a four-year deal with Richmond in 2015 which has tied him to the club until the end of 2019. Skipper Trent Cotchin's five-year extension signed at the end of 2014 secured him until 2020. Jack Riewoldt, the club's other key leader, is contracted until the end of 2019.

Given Martin's decision to stay with his club he joined at the start of the 2010 season the club has accepted his management's decision to attempt to negotiate a media contract to announce the new deal.

Martin's first game as a long-term committed Tiger comes with the club's return to the finals and its first top four finish since 2001 will be marked next Friday night in the qualifying final against Geelong in front of an anticipated crowd of more than 95,000.

Brilliant news. Praise must given to the club for the way it handled the situation. Martin also deserves enormous praise. He chose loyalty over enormous money and with the ridiculous speculation over his playing future he has managed to conduct himself in a very professional manner and perform at an outstanding level. I hope that he becomes one of the club greats.
