Pick 52: Luka Lesosky-Hay - @RichmondWomens

https://twitter.com/aflwomens

Welcome Luka to Punt Rd  :).
Richmond has selected Luka Lesosky-Hay with its final pick (No. 52 Overall, 32 Victorian) at the 2020 NAB AFL Women’s Draft.

It is a story of perseverance for the hardworking inside midfielder from Geelong Falcons after she was overlooked at the 2020 Draft.

Lesosky-Hay is no stranger to Richmond, having joined the Tigers as a train-on player for the 2020 AFLW season, where she came close to an AFLW debut.

“Luka impressed coaches last year with her ability to win the ball in the contest, we are really happy to be able to bring her back to the Club,” Richmond Women’s recruiter Lauren Tesoriero said.

With pick No.43, we have selected Australian basketballer, Tessa Lavey. #AFLDraft

Welcome Tessa to Tigerland  :).
Richmond has taken 27-year-old Australian basketballer, Tessa Lavey, with selection No.43 overall (29 Victorian) at the 2020 NAB AFL Women’s Draft.

Lavey, a 172cm point guard, and Commonwealth Games gold medalist has been working closely with Richmond Women’s specialist coach, Nathan Chapman on her football fundamentals and has impressed Tigers recruiters in recent months.

The former Australian Institute of Sport scholarship holder became available for the upcoming AFLW season after the postponement of the 2020 Tokyo Olympics and likelihood of a condensed 2020/21 WNBL season.

“Tessa is a strong powerful athlete with great potential. We are very excited to have her on board,” Richmond Women’s recruiter Lauren Tesoriero said.

Lavey who hails from Swan Hill is renowned for her energy, leadership, and work rate. She was the inaugural captain of the Perth Lynx before returning to Victoria to play with Dandenong Rangers.

The cross-coder will become part of a growing contingent of Richmond players from Swan Hill, which sits within the Club’s Next Generation Academy zone, with new teammate Alana Woodward and AFL youngster Thomson Dow also from the area.

Conti will enjoy having another midfielder in the team that is a gun.

Certainly will  :clapping

Now if we just had a coach  :huh3
Is Scott Gowan still available? Did well at North.

I'd be targeting Bec Goddard myself

But who knows what they are planning

The fact 4 weeks from the start of pre-season we still don't have a coach is staggering

Is it the AFL not yet determining the exact soft cap amount that is holding it up?

We've also lost $100k from the soft cap which would've gone a long way to paying for a new AFLW senior coach thanks to CCJ & Stack wanting a late night kebab  :facepalm.

So we gave up Grace Campbell for someone that hasn't played the game before and no one else was going to draft!

Another brilliant decision by our AFLW administrators

No the AFLW soft cap has been set. Same as 2020, as the AFL made it clear no changes to the AFLW for 2021.

Think you will find the 2021 soft cap for clubs has also been set, $3 mil + reduction.

The big sticking point is list sizes. Clubs out of the finals have already starting getting rid of footy department people.

Opals star Lavey to balance basketball with Richmond venture

Roy Ward
The Age
October 9, 2020 — 3.49pm

Perhaps it was the COVID-19 break or a lifetime as a Richmond supporter but when AFLW overtures came her way, Tessa Lavey couldn't say no.

The Rio Olympian and WNBL championship winner will become a dual-sport athlete, remaining with the Bendigo Spirit for the condensed WNBL season then joining Richmond for their AFLW season.

The 27-year-old played a season of under-14 footy in Casterton as a teenager then turned her attention to basketball, where she has played in the WNBL for a decade and represented Australia, winning two World Cup medals and a Commonwealth Games gold medal.

Lavey and her family are lifelong Richmond fans and she trained for the past few months on her footy skills and running ability before Richmond drafted her with pick 43 in Tuesday's AFLW draft.

"COVID-19 happened and it made us slow down a bit and think about life and where I want to be and where I want to go," Lavey said.

"Other family things have happened so this pushed me to make this something I could go after."

Lavey has been working for several months with Richmond specialist coach Nathan Chapman and is confident she can handle her new sport after growing up around footy in country Victoria.

The WNBL bubble will be pretty crazy, we have something like 14 games in 30 days, nearly every second day we have a game so we will be fit.

The 176-centimetre point guard still has hopes of making the Opals team for next year's Tokyo Olympics, should the event go ahead, but admits she doesn't know which way she would go if an AFLW game clashed with an Opals camp in 2021.

She won't be training with the Tigers until after the WNBL season finishes in mid-December but hopes to do some extra skill work with fellow Tiger Monique Conti, who left Melbourne Boomers late last season but has been linked with joining Southside Flyers for the shortened season.

"I can't speak on Mon's behalf but I can speak on mine - we will have to adjust how we go about pre-season," Lavey said.

"I really want to focus on the WNBL season, do the right thing by them as well. We start pre-season here in Bendigo on Monday and go up to the [Queensland] bubble the following weekend.

"The WNBL bubble will be pretty crazy, we have something like 14 games in 30 days, nearly every second day we have a game so we will be fit since we will be playing a lot."

Lavey doesn't have a position in mind when it comes to footy, she just wants to do her bit and show she can play at the top level.

She is among the fastest players in the WNBL and has exceptional dribbling, passing and driving skills, which should translate well to AFLW.

She isn't daunted by the Tigers' struggles in their first season; her biggest concern appears to be winning an argument with her mum about wearing a helmet or not.

Her parents made her wear one for her under-14 season but whether it translates to women's footy remains in discussion.

"My mum has been on me about this [a helmet] but I don't know," Lavey said with a laugh.

"I think I've got too much hair."

THE AFL is aiming to make a decision on the structure and timing of the 2021 NAB AFLW season in mid-to-late November.

Pre-season is due to officially commence at the start of November.

With the situation in flux, the AFL is loath to lock in a plan too early but is aiming for a fixture release in late November, with a partial fixture release also an option.

The plan for a nine-week home and away season and three weeks of finals in 2021, as laid out in the Collective Bargaining Agreement last year, is still the AFL's preferred option.

Forget the fixture

I'd just like us to appoint a coach  :help :facepalm

Mindboggling decision to let go of Campbell.

Of all the games I saw she was one of the very few girls on our list that had any clue but what impressed me most was her determination to fight for the footy in contest. She was young and fierce competitor. Major upside to keep her but for some stupid reason the team thought unnatural footy duds are the way to go.

“Step 1 girls this is how you bounce the footy.
Step 2 this is how you handpass
Step 3 this is how you kick.
Monique can you show the others how you do it?”
