Sheahan said the Club was working through its future second tier options.

What the hell does that mean? "Working through"?

......meanwhile the poorest AFL club, North Melbourne, won both the VFLW and AFLW premierships.

Well it just gets stranger.

Checked the Port Melbourne website it says they will be fielding a VFLW side in 2025. They never had a licence, it was our licence....so how does that work :-\

Went to a wedding recently and chatted to some ex and current AFLW players. 3 were ex Richmond, 2 were not. Worked out all 5 girls had played for a combined 7 clubs in AFLW. It was openly joked about how bad Richmonds women's program is. From coach to support to welfare. Was actually really disappointed to hear. None seems jaded or anything just were pretty honest in agreeing that out of all clubs they played for Richmond was the worst, least supportive and enjoyable to be in.

Tigers end VFLW alignment, leaving second-tier future uncertain

By Sophie Welsh
afl.com.au
24 Feb 2025

RICHMOND has ended its alignment with VFLW club Port Melbourne, leaving the club without a confirmed second-tier program for 2025.

Richmond joined forces with Port Melbourne in 2021 following the dissolution of its own VFLW program due to the "impact of the COVID pandemic".

For the past four seasons, Port Melbourne has been aligned with Richmond's AFLW program, with Richmond-listed players able to play for the Borough in the VFLW. Port Melbourne won the VFLW Premiership in 2023, but no Richmond AFLW-listed players took part.

The dissolution of the partnership leaves Richmond as the only Victorian AFLW side without a VFLW side or affiliate.

The Tigers' women's football boss Kate Sheahan said the club was considering its options for a second-tier side.

The VFLW season - which previously ran from March to July - has been brought into better alignment with the AFLW competition this year, with the final three weeks of the VFLW finals series to overlap with the first three weeks of the AFLW season.

The AFL's head of state league competitions, Jennie Loughnan, said the new VFLW dates were designed to complement the AFLW season.

"The decision to shift the rebel VFLW season dates followed a review of the women’s football calendar and creates more alignment with the updated NAB AFLW season timing," Loughnan said in December.

"The new rebel VFLW season dates will provide great benefits for clubs and players, with more opportunities now available for AFLW-listed players to compete in rebel VFLW matches as they prepare for the upcoming AFLW season."

However, the Tigers pointed towards the new start date of the 2025 AFLW season, which will start two weeks earlier in 2025 than in 2024, as the reason for the dissolution of the partnership.

"Because of the start date of the 2025 AFLW season being brought forward and the increasing demands of pre-season and the AFLW competition, we will not be having an alignment with Port Melbourne this year," Sheahan said in a statement on Friday.

Port Melbourne confirmed over the weekend it would be competing in the 2025 VFLW season as a standalone club.

Irish dasher Aoibhin Cleary bound for Richmond

Meath captain Aoibhin Cleary has signed a two-year deal with Richmond.

---------------------------------------------

Richmond is excited to announce the signing of its first-ever Irish AFLW player, Aoibhin Cleary, who has put pen to paper on a two-year deal with the Club.

Cleary is the current county captain of Meath in Ireland’s Gaelic National Football League (NFL).

A star of the competition, Cleary made her debut as a 16-year-old in 2016 and has since added over 75 appearances.

Cleary was named Meath Ladies Players Player of the Year in 2022 and was named as an NFL All Star for both the 2021 and 2022 seasons.

The 25-year-old was part of Meath’s inaugural All Ireland winning team in 2021 and she became a dual-winner the following season when they made it back-to-back titles.

Fellow Irish AFLW players Vikki Wall (North Melbourne) and Orlagh Lally (Fremantle) were also part of the triumphant teams, with Cleary among the best players in both games.

Cleary has also played with AFLW stars Sarah Rowe (Collingwood), Aishling Moloney (Geelong) and Niamh Kelly (Adelaide) at University level when representing Dublin City University at the O’Connor Cup.

Richmond AFLW Recruiting Manager, Trent Mosbey said the Club had been scouting Cleary closely for the past three years and believed she could fill a role as a running defender with versatility to go through the midfield.

“We are delighted to be able to give Aoibhin an AFLW opportunity for the next two seasons,” Mosbey said.

“The strengths in her game will translate well to AFLW- such as her speed, endurance, agility, running patterns and high-end work rate.

“We have been impressed by Aoibhin’s capacity to transition up and back the field. Aoibhin has also demonstrated an overhead marking ability and clean hands, her kicking skills on both feet also really caught our eye.

“She has the ability to defend, apply pressure, to win one-on-ones and has illustrated competitiveness, aggression and physicality which has been impressive to see.”

Mosbey added that Cleary, who is a qualified tax advisor having completed a Master of Accounting also displayed great character.

“Aoibhin is highly regarded for her leadership, professionalism, coachability, positive energy and strong desire to achieve,” he added.

“She has also demonstrated that she is a consistent performer week to week and performed well under pressure against the best players from around the country in big final games.”

Cleary added that it was an "extremely exciting time".

"I am so grateful for the opportunity and am really looking forward to the challenge," she said.

"There are a lot of things I am looking forward to, including learning a new game, playing in a whole new team dynamic, and experiencing life as a professional athlete.

"I can't wait."

The club needs to find the best head of woman's footy at the moment and get them to Richmond using all the money we have saved from not having a VFLW team for the last four seasons.

.......and sack Kate.

It's ridiculous and the club is acting like a bunch of losers.

THERE'S no shortage of talent in the AFLW competition, but there's no shortage of personality either.

As we wrapped up the 2024 AFLW season, AFL.com.au posed some curly questions to a handful of the competition's best players.

Next up is Richmond defender Beth Lynch, who's known for her hard tackling and athleticism.

From her best life lesson to a little-known fact about herself, some of the answers did surprise us.

But there's more to Beth than her footy ability.

Did anyone from any of the coteries ask the club about the VFLW program?

We are an embarrassment.

This is an example of how terrible this situation is.

Sheahan has to go and the club needs to take it seriously or just forget about all together.

I guess we can save money not having a women's program at all.

I'm not in a coterie but I did ask at the Club XIII season launch the other week what was going on.

No VFLW affiliation in 2025. As the 2 comps (AFLW & VFLW) don't really overlap (align) then not having involvement this year isn't going to impact on the women's program. Said that due to the 2 comps not being aligned our AFLW players rarely played VFLW. If they did it was maximum of 2 games

They will review it again in 2026
