5 Aug 2018Geelong coach Chris Scott has clarified the comments from his press conference after last night’s narrow loss to Richmond.
After the game, Scott commented on the Tigers in a way which raised a few eyebrows.
“We’re disappointed, but we’re not discouraged with the performance, we had our chances to win and we had the better of the game for big parts of the game,” Scott said post-match.
“They’re the best side in it at the moment, but they need a lot to go right for them to win it, no question.
“If we’re good enough over the next six weeks and we get another chance to play them, and hopefully we do, we’ll give ourselves a really good chance.
“They’re a good team, but they’re beatable. They’ve won 19 in a row at the MCG, they are good, but watching the game last week I thought Collingwood were on top of them for big parts.
“If you talk about the juggernauts of the competition in years gone by, you’re just never in the game against them. I don’t see that. I don’t want to overstate it and we think we can play better, but it’s a pretty tight competition at the top.”
On SEN’s Crunch Time, Scott said he didn’t mean it disrespectfully and just felt it was a fact.
“I think it’s just a truism. I would even reflect back on my time as a Brisbane player when we were at our best at Round 20, irrespective of the season you’ve had, you still need a lot to go right to win a premiership,” Scott said.
“I think I’m just stating the obvious, it’s far from a forgone conclusion.
“I think Richmond is by far the best team in the competition, I’m not here to argue that point, I think that’s a given, but where it will be in six to 10 weeks, I think it’s still very much in the air.
“It certainly wasn’t my intention to make a big comment, I thought I was just stating the obvious.”
SEN’s David King summed up what he felt Scott meant by the comments.
“I think what he was trying to say, and it didn’t come out that way last night, and it probably does sound a little bit disrespectful on occasion, but what he’s saying is, I’m telling my troops we can beat them,” he told SEN’s Crunch Time.
“They aren’t unbeatable, they aren’t as dominant as Essendon in 2000 or the Brisbane Lions of the three-peat, or the Cats or the Hawks, they’re not that.
“I think when you really have a sensible look at it, he’s right, but you just rarely hear a coach put that on the record after a game.”
