TWENTY years after she last pulled on footy boots, Courtney Wakefield is running around on Punt Road Oval in the yellow and black.

The lifelong Tigers supporter and mother of two young children is among 45 women making history as Richmond’s first ever women’s footballers in the club’s VFLW preseason squad.

Wakefield said she was taking it “a week at a time” as she follows her dreams without looking too far ahead.

“Whether its just the squad or we take it further, it’s all an unreal experience, so we’re just grabbing it with both hands and making the most of it at this stage,” she said.

Former Bendigo Thunder players Elise Hogan and Emily Findlay joins Richmond's VFLW side

Kieran Iles
Bendigo Advertiser
13 Feb 2018

THE number of former Bendigo Thunder players to join Richmond’s VFLW side has swelled by two more.

And it might not end there, with the Tigers hinting at more possible signings in the months ahead before the start of the season in March.

The Tigers have added former Melbourne AFLW player Elise Hogan and Thunder midfielder Emily Finday.

They join marquee signing and former Carlton AFLW midfielder Jess Kennedy and 2017 Thunder premiership vice-captain Jac Louttit.

The quartet took part in a joint training session with select Bendigo Pioneers and AFL Central Victoria Academy players at the QEO on Monday afternoon.

Richmond AFLW football operations manager Kate Sheahan said Hogan and Findlay would each add their own attributes to the Tigers’ developing list.

“We are really rapt to have Elise Hogan over from Melbourne, who is a huge Tigers supporter,” she said.

“She’s brought a huge amount of experience and leadership to the group.”

Hogan played one game for Melbourne in the inaugural AFLW season in 2017.

With the final list certain to contain a mix of young and experienced players – and some with non-football backgrounds – Sheahan said the leadership of players like Louttit had been crucial in the team’s formative stages.

“We are going to have a pretty young side, so having one of those older girls based in Bendigo will give the younger girls like Emily Findlay some guidance,” he said.

“We have also spent a bit of time with (Thunder midfielder) Kodi Jacques, who isn’t listed, but she will be one of our TAC Cup players when we are allowed to play then, which won’t be until after June.”

Monday’s hour-long training session was run by Tigers AFLW coach Tom Hunter, with support from senior Richmond footballers, including young premiership forward Dan Butler.

For the Pioneers girls it was an opportunity to gain exposure on what was needed to take the next step in their careers to VFLW level, and ultimately the AFLW.

Without doubt, we should be focusing on recruiting transgenders with bodies like blokes practically exclusively

Should our recruiting agents be scouring the drag queen clubs in Melbourne?

They should leave no stone unturned in pursuit of a flag in 2019

Exactly

I am even considering buying a wig and putting a few plums under my shirt and trying out myself for AFLW

Are they getting paid just as much as the vfl listed players?

We don’t want the club to be in trouble with the human rights commission.  :rollin

The spirit of Anzac Day is particularly special for the VFLW Tigers’ newest recruits Kirra Grimes, Alice Edmonds and Trish Muller.

The trio all currently serve in the Australian Defence Force (ADF) and feel honoured to have the opportunity to play on Anzac Day Eve, when Richmond VFLW takes on the Australian Defence Force (ADF) Women’s All Stars team in a curtain-raiser match at the Swinburne Centre, Punt Road Oval.

The match starts at 3:10pm, with an Anzac service on the field at 3pm, and is free for fans to attend, to show support to Richmond’s new VFLW team, as well as the ADF team featuring current serving members of the Australian Defence Force.

Fans can then head over to the MCG to watch Richmond take on Melbourne in the annual Anzac Day Eve blockbuster.
