I reckon the girls should play on a smaller ground. Like under 12/13 boys footy the girls just don’t have the power to kick the footy more than 25-30 metres max.
If they make the ground smaller they’d probably increase scoring.

VFLW Tigers grounded by NT Thunder

The VFLW Tigers have faced a 4.5 (29) to 7.10 (52) defeat to NT Thunder on Saturday afternoon in Round 11 at the Swinburne Centre.

It was a tough task for the Tigers against the practiced NT Thunder outfit, who boast a large number of Adelaide Crows AFLW stars.

But, Richmond rose to the challenge and, as per Coach Tom Hunter’s instructions, they “seized their moments”.

It was a physical battle from the first bounce, with both sides bringing plenty of grit. Richmond’s pressure around the ball was significant, and after a contested first quarter, they held a two-point lead, which they extended to five points by half-time.

The Tigers forced NT Thunder to adapt to Richmond’s style of play, and they played with intent as they matched up against one of the league’s best.

But the ground opened up in the second half, and NT Thunder capitalised on their clearances as they managed five goals.

Richmond narrowed the margin to just 11 points in the final term, but they struggled to carry their first-half intensity across the full four quarters.

Despite this, Richmond’s on-field communication and encouragement towards each other never wavered.

By the final siren, NT Thunder had stretched their lead to 23 points.

Coach Hunter said he was rapt with the team’s ability to dictate play in the first half against such a quality side.

“We set them a task to play a certain style and deny NT the way that they wanted to play, and I think for the first half we certainly executed that,” Hunter said.

“The challenge for us, with the young side and building towards what we want to look like, is to narrow that gap down, from what it looks like when it’s awesome, and when it’s not going so well for us.”

The over-arching focus for the clash was to convert opportunities into moments of importance, and Hunter said he was pleased with how the girls embodied this.

“We’ve praised the girls on what they do really well, and when the opportunity comes to shine, we want them to show their strengths,” Hunter said.

“We stacked up all our moments today and it was probably the reason why we were so competitive within the game, because the girls made the most of their opportunities and their moments when they came.”

Highlighted by laying 40 more tackles than their opposition, Richmond impressed with their high intensity and work rate.

“I think that’s the Richmond brand that AFL and VFL supporters will notice, and I think that’s trickled down to the VFLW as well. The exciting thing about that is it means we’re putting a lot of pressure on the ball,” Hunter said.

“It’s awesome that they’re getting to the contest and turning up.”

The Tigers had two debutants on show, Ruby Edmeades and Jackie Radnall, who both stood out in their respective roles.

“It’s an opportunity for them to be able to play at that level. It gives them a great indication of what the level is about, and it’s really exciting when we can bring in girls that are learning our brand and learning our style,” Hunter said.

“It’s going to take time but the future is really bright for us.”

Forward sensation Courtney Wakefield’s accuracy both in front of goal and in the air was on full display. She claimed all three of Richmond’s goals and soared to an impressive eight marks.

“We speak about moments, and she’s certainly one that capitalises on all of them. She’s just got that presence out there on the field where she can take marks and kick goals. She is really well-valued within our side for what she brings,” Hunter said.

Young gun Sophie Damon also had a breakthrough performance. The 17-year-old moved into the ruck where she showcased her appetite for the contest and played with purpose.

Hunter said he was pleased with how Damon stepped up to the role and adapted to the occasion.

“We’re asking her to do things that we’d ask all our players to do, which is give us a contest,” Hunter said.

“She took some fantastic marks and put herself in really dangerous positions to get contact. And she’ll continue to grow as the game goes on.”

Phoebe Monahan once again prevailed as Richmond’s best. The ball magnet demonstrated her composure under pressure and her football smarts as she tallied team-highs of disposals (20), kicks (16), tackles (9), and clearances (5).

The Tigers head to Ikon Park next Saturday July 18 at 11:30am, where they will challenge Carlton in Round 12.

VFLW: Cats too strong for Tigers

The VFLW Tigers have been outplayed by Geelong, 1.2 ( to 10.7 (67), on Saturday afternoon at GMHBA Stadium in Round 13.

The Tigers travelled to the Cattery to face fourth-placed Geelong with hopes of a scalp. But the practiced opposition, who has benefitted from an additional year in the VFLW, was victorious in the battle of the felines.

Richmond was left behind in the first quarter as the home side accelerated to a 21-point lead.

The Tigers, however, ramped up their intensity in the second and restricted Geelong to just one major. But their hard work in defence meant they were fatigued when in possession, and they were not able to apply any scoreboard damage themselves.

The floodgates opened for the Cats in the third term and they stacked on six consecutive goals, widening the margin to 28 points.

But Richmond was resurgent in the final quarter. The Tigers’ energy on the field was amplified and they performed at the contest. Keeping Geelong goalless for the quarter, the Tigers snagged one of their own thanks to a set shot from Jess Gardner.

In true Richmond style, the Tigers fought until the final siren, but the third-quarter damage was done and the Cats prevailed as winners by 59 points.

Coach Tom Hunter said while the result was disappointing, Richmond’s fourth quarter performance was a promising indication of his side’s capabilities.

“That last quarter was a great blueprint of the way we want to look, it was just a shame that it took so long to be able to get there,” he said.

Eighteen-year-old debutant Tamara Smith excelled in her first game wearing a Richmond guernsey. The Murray Bushrangers 2018 Best and Fairest recipient and Vic Country representative thrived at the contest as she laid eight tackles.

“We’ve been really impressed with the way she goes about her football. She’s really quiet and unassuming but on the football field she loves to tackle, loves the contest, and we really value those things so she fitted in really well today,” Hunter said.

Hunter also praised defender Evie Burry’s efforts and her ability to stick to her role as a pillar in defence.

“More often than not, she’s going to beat her opponent. We’ve been really impressed with the way she’s grown and the steps she’s taken on her football journey with us,” he said.

Midfielder Kate Dempsey topped the team for disposals (15), closely followed by Lisa Davie (14) and Phoebe Monahan (14).

Richmond will return to Tigerland for Round 14 against Williamstown, their penultimate game of the season. Hunter said the match, which will be held on Sunday August 12 at 12.00pm, will be a great opportunity for a challenge back on home deck.

Heartbreak for VFLW Tigers against Seagulls

In heartbreaking fashion, the VFLW Tigers have fallen to Williamstown by one point in Round 14 on Sunday afternoon at the Swinburne Centre, 5.7 (37) to 5.8 (38).

It was a commanding start for Richmond, who welcomed back star forward Christina Bernardi as she slotted the opening goal, which was closely followed by a major from fellow Tiger Emma King.

The Tigers read each other effortlessly as they produced some classy passages of play and locked down Williamstown’s attempts to convert.

A snap out of traffic by Ella Ross in the second term extended Richmond’s leading margin to 18 points by half-time, as they held the Seagulls goalless.

But the Seagulls crept up on the Tigers in the third term as they accrued three quick goals and reduced the margin to seven points at the final break.

The fourth term was a tense affair. Williamstown managed one goal and two behinds early, stealing a one-point lead.

Tiger Kate Dixon responded with her second goal of the day to give the Tigers some breathing space, but Seagull Sharnie Whiting soon retaliated to reclaim the lead for Williamstown.

Richmond’s forward line fought hard to save the day in the dying minutes, but could not break through congestion. Thanks to their second-half turnaround, the Seagulls snatched victory against the Tigers for the second time this season.

It was a brave showing by the Tigers, who produced countless displays of grit and courage.

Coach Tom Hunter said despite the agonising result, he could not fault his side’s intensity.

“I’m never going to question the girls with their tackling pressure and their intent and their chasing, but just more around once we’ve got the ball, what we can do with it,” he said.

“I thought we controlled the game for probably close to three quarters but that last quarter got away from us a little bit. It’s amazing what one point either way will do.”


Youngster Alice Edmonds had a breakthrough day in the ruck, as she led Richmond to a successful 56-17 performance against their opposition in hit-outs. The 20-year-old also laid an equal team-high of six tackles.

“Alice did a fantastic job. She’s developed so much over the course of the year and what we’re seeing now is that we’ve got confidence and trust that we can kick it to her on her head and she does so well to mark it in long down the line contests,” Hunter said.

Ball-magnet Phoebe Monahan was ascendant in the midfield, punctuated by 24 touches, 22 kicks, six clearances and six inside 50s.

“Phoebe is so strong over the ball. She wins at the contest and she’s a great long kick so she can clear the area,” Hunter said.

“We’ll look to work on other things with Phoebe and continue to help her grow so when she goes back to GWS and AFLW 3, she has another string to her bow as a footballer.”

A Round 15 bye will allow the Tigers to be refreshed for their final game of the season against the Southern Saints in Round 16. Richmond will travel to Skybus Stadium for the closing round on Saturday August 25, with the first bounce at 11.00am.

“We’ve had seven on the trot so the girls definitely need a break,” Hunter said.

“It’s going to be a great opportunity to go down to Southern Saints territory and have a great game against another side that’s starting up from scratch this year.”

VFLW: Tigers outplay Saints in thrilling final round

The VFLW Tigers have finished the season on a high, recording a three-point win against the Southern Saints on Saturday at Skybus Stadium, 4.1 (25) to 3.4 (22).

The Round 16 contest was a thriller, with both maiden sides vying for a win to round out their debut seasons.

It was a fierce arm wrestle from the get-go, which resulted in a lack of scoring opportunities for both sides as they went goal-for-goal in the first half.

Thick fog blanketed Sybus Stadium as the Tigers adapted to the skinny ground, playing with determination as they thrived in the contest.

Christina Bernardi spearheaded Richmond’s plan of attack and sealed their first major with a monster kick that bounced all the way through.

By half-time, just one point separated the two sides.

The Southern Saints broke away in the third term, thanks to a set shot by Gabriella De Angelis.

But Richmond fought back with a beautiful passage of play by Jacqui Graham, Christina Bernardi and Kate Dixon, to reduce the margin to two points at the last change.

Inspired by Coach Tom Hunter’s message to make the most of the final 20 minutes of the season, the Tigers came into the fourth quarter roaring. They gathered momentum as they lifted their attacking pressure and communicated effectively.

Richmond took the lead for the first time when Bernardi executed out of traffic from 40 metres out, her second of the day.

Kate Dixon swiftly backed it up with her second, to extend Richmond’s lead to nine points with just a few minutes remaining.

In nerve-wracking fashion, one final surge from the Southern Saints saw the home side bridge the gap to a mere three points in the dying moments.

But Richmond’s fourth-quarter scoreboard damage was enough to secure the win.

Coach Hunter said he was proud of the girls’ efforts in bookending the season with opening and closing wins.

“It was an amazing of football, especially in that last quarter when it got really tense,” Hunter said.

“The Southern Saints are a fantastic side, we knew they’d put a lot of pressure on the contest, and we think we matched that and we tried to get them on the outside.”

Christina Bernardi displayed her football smarts as she hit her targets and amassed 24 touches, 18 kicks and eight tackles.

“She’s come back from AFLW commitments and played mid forward this week for plenty of the ball this week and used it really well and hit the scoreboard,” Hunter said.

Co-vice skipper and star forward Kate Dixon also played a pivotal role in forward line and showed composure in front of goal.

“Kate Dixon had a great game as well in front of the sticks. She’s started and finished the year really well, a credit to all her work,” Hunter

Alice Edmonds’ authority in the ruck gifted the Tigers first use, and her excellent game sense, punctuated by 15 touches, illustrated once again why she is a rising star.

“Her growth over the year has been amazing. She’s a really talented ruck and she’s been developing her kicking, and just her contest work and her second efforts are fantastic ,and things that we really value,” Hunter said.

But most importantly, Hunter praised the supportive, inclusive nature that his side has developed.

“It’s a really special year to be able to start from the ground up. We wanted to establish a Richmond brand that trickles down from AFL to VFL and VFLW,” Hunter said.

“We’re really proud of that and I’m really proud of the girls.”

Q. Did the Board feel our first step into women’s football was a success? Do you think AFLW is a gimmick?

A. It was wonderful to see our VFLW team play for the first time in 2018. Members of the Board and management had the privilege of attending our inaugural VFLW best and fairest dinner and saw first-hand the passion these women have for the game and our Club. In my view, that was the most important measure of success in 2018 and we have now laid firm foundations for 2019 and the introduction of an AFLW team in 2020.

I certainly don’t believe AFLW is a gimmick but, as with initiatives of this magnitude, mistakes will be made and we will learn along the way. The most important thing is that we have the aspiration to build a thriving elite-level female competition and we look forward to playing our part in 2020.

The VFLW Tigers will face off against the Australian Defence Force Women's All Stars this afternoon in the Women’s Anzac Challenge Cup.

Kicking off at 2.30pm, the clash will be a curtain raiser to Richmond's Anzac Eve match against Melbourne at the MCG from 7.35pm.

VFLW Tigers roar with Round 1 win

The VFLW Tigers have defeated the Darebin Falcons by 35 points in the opening round of the VFLW season at the Swinburne Centre on Saturday afternoon.

The team’s 12.7 (79) to 7.2 (44) victory capped a stellar debut for 12 fresh players.

The final score was also a drastic improvement from the two teams’ previous meeting in the 2018 season, where the Tigers were held goalless and lost by 39 points.

VFLW Tigers coach Tom Hunter said although more than half the team was officially taking to the field in the Yellow and Black for the first time, they were ready.

“I just felt our girls were really prepared going into the game, and knew what we wanted to do," Hunter told Roar Vision post-game.

Among the debutantes was Tayla Stahl-Smith, who booted six goals for the team.

Stahl-Smith supported the team across the ground throughout the match and helped to set up multiple other goals, including one for Emily Paterno from the forward pocket in the first quarter.

Hunter said Stahl-Smith had been working hard at her fitness since joining the team over the pre-season.

“She took a really big step forward today, on the back of the work that our midfield are doing and allowing her to be free on the forward line as well.”

Midfielder Jessica Kennedy, who continues in her role as captain for the 2019 season, collected 11 disposals, three inside 50s and three tackles.

Newcomer Millie Klingbeil (one goal, 10 disposals) also played an important role in connecting the midfield and forwardlines.

During the third quarter, Klingbeil went for a run and made a crucial pass to full-forward Courtney Wakefield, resulting in a nice team goal.

Another debutant Hannah Ibrahim (team-high 16 disposals, eight tackles, one goal) and 18-year-old midfielder Grace Egan (15 disposals) also had big days on-field.

The Tigers kept their defensive line solid before half-time, but struggled to clear the ball from full-back at times as the game wore on.

Darebin’s determination earned them four goals in the final quarter as they made a bid for a comeback win, but the Tigers eventually prevailed.

Hunter said the team will work on that late-game momentum in training in the weeks to come.

“We’ll take a lot of learnings out of this game, particularly late in quarters [and] staying engaged in the game, and that’s just going to make us a lot better,” he said.

Richmond will face the GWS AFLW side in a practice match next weekend, before resuming their VFLW campaign at the Swinburne Centre on May 25 against Essendon in the first of a Dreamtime triple-header.
