According to Bomberblitz they are only going to allow 7,000-8,000 people into the Red Cliffs ground and not the predicted 15,000 due to safety reasons. So if anyone from OER is making the long trek up to Mildura, it looks like you already needed to have bought your ticket otherwise you go onto a waiting list.

Hopefully this will convince Fox Footy to cover the game as Jackstar suggested.

Having been to Quondong Park, as it’s locally known (unless they changed the name on me), a number of times, the logistics of trying to get 10,000 people in there seems mind boggling, let alone 15,000.  Especially when you consider that the population of Red Cliffs is around 1,500.

From the conversations I’ve had, with family up there, it sounds like there’s a lot of interest in the game, from people in the area, which shouldn’t surprise anyone.  And it seems that if you haven’t already got a ticket then you may be hard pressed to get one.  Yesterday, I heard of one person who was after 20 tickets.  Good luck to him, by the sounds of things.

I don’t know that too many practice matches will come close to meaning so much to people as this one does.  And due to the circumstances under which the game is being played, and the respect both clubs are showing to the occasion, it goes way beyond the game itself.

Hopefully FoxFooty comes through for those not able to get there.

That's true TS. Well done to both clubs in deciding to bring up their best available sides as a mark of respect.

Strong demand for Mildura match
1:18:33 PM Fri 10 March, 2006
Australian Football League

More than 8000 tickets for the game have already been sold for the NAB Challenge match between Essendon and Richmond to be played at Red Cliffs on Friday March 17.

The Mildura Rural City Council is currently working to increase ground capacity.

It is planned that further tickets will go on sale next Tuesday once capacity is confirmed, with prices at $10 for adults, $5 for concessions, $2 for children and $20 for families.

AFL Members and AFL club members can attend on presentation of their 2006 membership cards.

There is some seating available but the majority of the ground is for standing room patrons.

The proceeds for this match will be directed to the trust established for the families of the six teenagers killed in the recent road accident in Mildura.

Saw this on BB - The AFL wishes to advise it has finalised its draft fixture for the NAB Challenge matches for the weekend of March 17-18, which will be confirmed once all of this weekend's NAB Cup results are known.

Friday March 17 (all times are local)

Richmond v Essendon at Red Cliffs, 4.30pm

Let's hope it's not 38 degrees  :-\

Footy brings Mildura together (Herald-Sun)

Footy brings city together
11 March 2006
Herald Sun
Mike Sheahan

IN the context of life in Mildura in recent weeks, a game of football seems a totally meaningless event.

Yet, football is helping a city rediscover hope and a future worth the fight after a moment of the devil's handiwork claimed six teenage lives.

Essendon and Richmond will play a benefit game in Red Cliffs on Friday afternoon, an initiative that seems to have given the region renewed purpose.

AFL ground operations manager Jill Lindsay said yesterday the energy and co-operative spirit in Mildura was stunning. "We often underestimate the power of football to bring people together," she said.

All 8000 tickets have been sold to the game, which will have Quandong Park at bursting point.

Not for the first time, the wider football family has come together to help those whose lives have been devastated by tragedy.

From the top down. Before last night's mishap at Bendigo, James Hird had decided he simply had to play for Essendon, regardless of a build-up planned to the minute, after reading he was a hero to one victim.

Kerry Prowse, who lost two children, said of her son, Shane, at the funeral service: "He thought he was going to be the next Michael Jordan and the next James Hird."

Coaches Kevin Sheedy and Terry Wallace happily committed to the game, while AFL chief executive Andrew Demetriou is expected to head a strong AFL delegation.

Mildura is pulling together, showing just a hint that it is capable of fighting its way out of the grief and gloom that has almost suffocated the city in the past three weeks.

It is a recovery sparked in part by an Essendon initiative and Richmond's willingness to help.

Richmond has invited Frank Calvi, whose sister Josephine perished in the roadside carnage, to take part in the warm-up and to run on to the field with the team.

Frank, a highly rated junior, was at Quandong Park yesterday in a jumper borrowed from former Richmond captain Mark Lee, a product of the Sunraysia region.

His sister's casket was covered in flowers and a Richmond scarf at a service late last month.

Lindsay admitted she thought the city had no hope of meeting the requirements for an AFL fixture after her first visit 10 days ago.

"I told them, 'If we are going to come up here, this is what you're going to have to do', and there were a heap of things," she said.

Lindsay returned on Thursday and said later: "They've done everything we asked. The antiquated dressingroom has been stripped bare and refurbished, the playing surface has been upgraded, and earthmoving equipment was brought in to bank an area of the ground and increase the capacity.

"It's been absolutely phenomenal what they've done. There's carpenters, plumbers, electricians and painters all over the place.

"The council has put everything on hold to get this done."

The tragedy hasn't escaped the attention of a couple of multi-nationals, either.

The NAB has contributed $20,000 and 500 tickets, while Qantas has arranged a charter flight to carry 140 people from the two clubs, the umpires and the AFL contingent.

As much as football changes, it remains the people's game.

On BB they claimed Sheeds couldn't be stuffed going to Mildura  ???. Find that hard to believe as this game was his idea to support the Red Cliffs community after the tragedy with those six kids and you would think he at least be at the ground watching.

The extra tickets are being sold in Mildura and, according to my sources, the queue started at around 4.00am and by 6.00am stretched for at least one block.  Doubt there would be too many tickets left by now. For a smallish town, that’s not a bad effort.

Your sources are on the money TS:

Big crowd vies for AFL tickets
ABC

Hundreds of people are queuing to buy a new release of tickets for Friday night's AFL practice match in Mildura.

Eight thousand tickets were snapped up in three days when the tickets went on sale last week, but the council announced yesterday another 1,500 tickets would be available.

People began arriving early outside the Mildura Visitor Information Centre and queues have stretched out the door since the tickets went on sale.

Mildura game sold out

Second Release Sells Out - 14/3/2006
Mildura Rural City Council Notice Board

The second and final release of tickets for Friday's NAB Challenge Match at Red Cliffs has sold out.

A final allocation of 1500 tickets went on sale at 6am today to accommodate work schedules. Queues for the tickets had formed by 2:30am.

The allocation was made available after discussions with authorities indicated extra works conducted at Quandong Park within the last week meant the ground could accommodate more spectators.

Around 9,500 tickets have been sold for the match.

Mildura Rural City Council Mayor Eddie Warhurst said it was no surprise the tickets had sold out so quickly, and the demand was further evidence of the community's appreciation for the match.

"The fact the tickets sold out so quickly is a clear reflection of the way the community has embraced this opportunity," he said.

"The response is the best way of saying thank you for an initiative that was generated from outside by Kevin Sheedy initially, and then the AFL and the two clubs.

"The transformation of Quandong Park, Red Cliffs, stands as a tribute to the way a community can come together in times of need.

"We can now look forward to a first-class match."
