‘Look at Pendlebury’: Why Tigers coach won’t ‘put a ceiling’ on star after contract call

Richmond coach Adem Yze isn’t ruling out a season beyond 2026 for recently re-signed spearhead Tom Lynch.

Lynch returns to the Tigers from his five-week ban this Saturday and will return next season too after extending for another year on Friday.

Yze has regularly spoken about Lynch’s importance to Richmond through his performance and guidance to the young forwards at Punt Rd.

On Friday, the coach said he wouldn’t “put a ceiling” on Lynch’s career and referenced the repeat one-year deals given to ageing stars across the competition.

“When you look at Scott Pendlebury, I think he’s signed five one-year deals in a row,” he said.

“We don’t want to put a ceiling on how long that’s going to last, right now he signs a one-year deal and Dion (Prestia) is looking at a one-year deal as well.

“It’s not just the one-year process, it’ll all be based around body and impact in games. When I say it could be two or three years, if all going well the same sort of discussion will happen next year.

“For a player, you don’t want to look at the end, you don’t want to see the finish line, you want to be able to perform and hopefully they can last as long as ‘Pendles’.

“We’re obviously rapt he’s playing this weekend, but we’re rapt at the same time he’s committed for at least another season.

“He’s so important to our footy club but not only our footy club, our young forward line so stoked for that news to come out today.”

While Richmond committed to a heavy rebuild last year, it isn’t willing to push all of its premiership experience out the door.

Yze said players like Lynch, Dion Prestia, Nathan Broad and Nick Vlastuin were “critical” to fast-tracking the Tigers’ youth.

“You can see other teams around the comp are searching for that and bringing in players from other teams, we’ve got that at our doorstep and within our four walls,” he said.

“Dion is in discussion right now, Lynchy committed, Broady … their ability to fast-track our players is going to be so important for us.

“It’s awesome for our footy club and young forward line.”

Lynch plays his first game in five weeks since his rogue swing at Adelaide defender Jordon Butts.

Yze said Lynch was remorseful and eager to make amends.

“We did and it’s been five weeks since we did that … we love the fact he’s got white-line fever and he plays on the edge,” he said.

“Our younger forwards need to know what it is to compete on an AFL field, but it spilled over and the action was wrong and our younger players needed to know that.

“The discussion on him going in had started mid-season, so he knew he was a required player. We understand how important he is to us,

“Having his magnet available today, for a coach you just feel safer knowing our younger boys have got a quality forward, leader of our footy club to stand aside.”

Chalk and cheese seriously.
Look at Cameron. 6 months younger but you could mistake it for 6 years.

Some just don't have absurd longevity and Lynch won't have it that far unfortunately.

He isn't saying lynch will play till 37/38.

The 2027 season doesn't seem that far fetched and would be good protection for the young talls

Crucial to 2 flags. Repaid that salary and more.

Both 100% correct

But you don’t pay him big coin next year because he was huge in flags 5 and 6 years ago ..

Who gets the money?

They have to pay the minimum salary cap level.

Ideally it's a Reid / NWM / tdk / butters type but that seems unlikely

He won’t be. We both owe each other
"The money might have been better. But, at the end of the day, Richmond showed faith in me. It's only fair that now we're 18th on the ladder, I show the faith back in the club and do everything I can to put them in front. In the end, I'm stoked I made the decision to stay. I f***ing love this club”

If he’s getting paid a little/ moderately overs and he is taking on an unofficial coaching role then I’m okay with that.

Understand current Lynch shouldn’t be commanding a high salary, but short of front loading the younger players contracts someone’s gotta get paid and I’m not sure we really have many players who commands it.

Konversations with Konrad: Tom Lynch

In this candid chat, Richmond Forward Tom Lynch sits down with Konrad to talk leadership, resilience, and his passion for the game. From memorable moments in the yellow and black to a career changing decision to move back to Melbourne and join the Tigers.

VIDEO: https://www.richmondfc.com.au/video/1859989/konversations-with-konrad-tom-lynch

---------------------

"I flew down to Melbourne for surgery. That's when I spoke to Hawthorn, Collingwood and Richmond. I hadn't spoken to anyone before that," Lynch said

"Out of the three, Richmond was definitely number one that I wanted to go to. I felt like Richmond was the best fit out of all of them. I didn't want to get my hopes up too quickly, until a deal was done."

The deal certainly got done, with Lynch thrown into a debut in Round 1 of the 2019 season, kicking three goals in a win over Carlton, in front of 85,000 at the MCG.

"It was incredible," Lynch said.

"Driving everyday you see the MCG and you're training next to it. We're so fortunate to be where we are and have the MCG as our home ground."

For Lynch, who is now 31-years-old, he felt right at home at Tigerland, well before his first season in the yellow and black.

"If you asked Tig (Nick Vlastuin), it would be that Port Adelaide game (Round 4, 2019), when Bruce McAvaney said, 'he's a Tiger now, Tiger Tom'. He still carries on," Lynch said.

Lynch's game today. Our only effective forward and he could have kicked a bag if he had kicked straight.

13 disposals (11k, 2h, 12c, 2u, 46.2% eff.)
7 marks (6 contested)
2 marks
2 tackles
239m gained
1 intercept
7 score involvements
3 goals
4 behinds
86% time on ground

Look at him as insurance. If the kids start showing a lot more than they have this year then you have a dilemma. Games into kids or continue to play Lynch most likely in his last year.
If the continue to take a bit of time which is likely then no dilemma at all.

The other interesting thing is what do we do with Mykelti Lefau. Personally i want us to train him up as a mid its not as if he hasn't played there and its not as if our mid stocks are huge. People talk about Balta playing onball but the obvious one to play there is staring us in the face.

Lynchy is not taking games off kids next year. imo he  is needed for his toughness and experience simply because our young talls  in all honesty won't be at a stage where they can take over.

Prestia on the other hand imo has become a problem and should be tapped on the shoulder for obvious reasons.

Like we did this year i really hope we continue to play two as a minimum  of our young kpf's with an experienced player like Tom.
Prioritise games into kids and find the balance of playing enough good seniors around them.
