Grigg on the radio before Wednesday night's game said it's his knee and hip that are the issue. He said he had a setback when they tried to increase his training intensity. He's hoping to be back in a couple of weeks.

Richmond’s Physical Performance Manager Peter Burge's injury update:

Jack Riewoldt, PCL

“The ‘doc’ examined him during the game (Anzac Eve v Melbourne) and post-game he told us that it’s probably going to be a six-eight-week injury, a PCL strain. It was as expected after his scans . . . We did see the surgeon and got an opinion, but based on his scans he doesn’t need surgery. So now he’ll go into a rehab program and be off legs for the first couple of weeks. We just want that ligament to strengthen up and we need to work on his quad strength. In the short term he won’t be doing too much, and then we’ll slowly progress his running and make sure he’s strong . . . We’ll probably look to after the bye as a realistic return.”

David Astbury, rolled ankle

“He’s pulled up quite well. He was certainly bruised and swollen after the (Anzac Eve) game. Dave is the ultimate professional. He had the foot in a bucket straight after the game and I dare say for the next 48 hours he was doing that. But he’s come in today walking around and jogged down the hallway. So he’ll do a little bit of running tomorrow and will aim to fully train on Thursday. We’ll make an assessment from there if he’s ready to play.”

Trent Cotchin, hamstring - See Cotchin thread.

Shaun Grigg, hip

“Currently with Shaun we’re dealing with the hip issue and we’re looking at different avenues of how to progress that and get to a level where he can increase his intensity in training. But it’s not going to be short term. We’re probably looking still at the long term . . .”

Jack Graham, hamstring

“Jack, warming up for the game (VFL last Saturday v Casey), was doing some stoppage work and  noticed something in his hamstring after picking up a ground ball. He didn’t think too much of it and then started the game. But within five minutes he wasn’t comfortable running at top speed. It certainly wasn’t anything dramatic or a serious injury, but we just took the safe option to bring him off and wrap him up at that time. Jack will certainly miss this week. Like with all our other soft-tissue injuries, we’ve just got to take a safe approach and put him through the rehab process and get him back training at intensity until he’ll play again.”

Mav Weller, back

“Mav had a back issue. He withdrew from the (VFL) game at half-time. It’s something he has managed in the past. He got a knock during the game and then it just started to seize up at half-time and he flagged with us that he wouldn’t be able to complete the game. I anticipate he’d settle down and be a probable for this week. We’ll assess him at Thursday training and see how he feels. But at this stage, I think he’s looking fairly good to play again this week.”

Oleg Markov, knee

“Oleg had minor surgery two weeks ago to explore through the knee, the lateral meniscus. He had a little bit of a clean-up there and he’s responded extremely well. He’s already running and changing direction. He’ll do a little bit of training later this week and we’re looking for a return to play next week, which is a little quicker than we expected . . .”

RICHMOND

Coach Damien Hardwick was never going to admit Richmond was at breaking point, but it’s pretty clear the injuries are taking their toll.

Undisputed locks missing from the Tigers’ best 22 are Trent Cotchin (hamstring), Jack Riewoldt (knee), Alex Rance (knee), David Astbury (ankle) and Jayden Short (elbow).

And adding salt to the wounds of a 47-point loss to Western Bulldogs on Saturday night was two more players finding themselves in the hands of doctors and in some doubt for Round 8.

Defender Nick Vlastuin played on after hurting his ankle, but Hardwick said he was only “probable” to take on Fremantle next weekend given the severity.

Forward Daniel Rioli also played on after being crunched in a marking contest, Hardwick saying he was a “bit bruised and battered” after the game.

The good news is that key defender Astbury — sorely missed against the Bulldogs — should return from an ankle injury against the Dockers.

Captain Trent Cotchin is at least another two weeks away.

The Tigers have been brave to win three of their past four matches given the names missing, but their uphill battle only looks set to continue for the time being.

Early prognosis

Richmond's ever-growing injury list has seen classy forward Rioli and integral intercept defender Vlastuin join its ranks, with the club still to confirm the time frame for the pair. Rioli has been battered from pillar to post over the past few weeks, suffering a number of corkies to his thigh and then copping a knock to the ribs against the Dogs. Vlastuin's rolled ankle doesn't appear to be to severe, while fellow back Astbury is a test to return for the trip across to play Fremantle.

Half-back flanker Oleg Markov is also set to return to football at some level, having recovered nearly a month faster than expected from surgery on a torn meniscus in his knee.

However, in bad news for the injury-hit club, yet another player has joined the rehab group after Callum Moore badly injured his ankle in the VFL's win over Williamstown on Sunday.

Moore is set for an extended period on the sidelines, with the club rating the injury, a small fracture as well as ligament and tendon damage, as requiring a "medium-to-long-term" recovery.

There is no exact time-frame yet as the 22-year-old needs to meet with a specialist to see if surgery is required.

Does the news of Moore getting injured for a lengthy period of time spell the end of his career as a Tiger with only a contract for this year?

What are people’s thoughts on him getting another contract?

I personally don’t mind giving a 22 year old KPF another year but too be honest I wouldn’t lose any sleep if he was to be given arse either.
From what I have seen to date, good VFL player, average AFL player.

So after watching the injury update on the clubs website our list is looking something like this:
Rioli: Test
Vlastuin: Test
Graham: 1 week
Cotchin: 2 weeks
Short: 6 weeks
Riewoldt: didn’t get timeframe but said will start jogging in the next couple of weeks
Ross: 6-8 weeks (will be cautious given he’s a first year player)
Nankervis: 6-8 weeks (more likely eight)
Moore: 8-10 weeks
Rance:  :shh

Early prognosis

Despite David Astbury and Oleg Markov now being fully fit, Richmond's injury list stays at 12, with Nankervis and Ross added after suffering serious injuries against Fremantle. Nankervis has torn a muscle and some tendon off the bone, while Ross needs surgery for a syndesmosis injury. Vlastuin and Rioli are likely to play this week while Grigg has officially hung up the boots after persistent knee and hip injuries. Short has only just come out of his elbow brace after dislocating it, while Riewoldt is expected to start jogging possibly at the end of next week. The club is aiming for a round 11 return for skipper Cotchin. - Sarah Black

Richmond’s Physical Performance Manager Peter Burge provides an update on the injury status of several members of the Tigers’ playing group.

Toby Nankervis, adductor

“That ruck contest (v Fremantle last Sunday), he actually slipped on the ground and he avulsed his adductor longus muscles. So what that means is he’s actually torn away the muscle and a little bit of tendon off the bone. It’s a longer-term injury, probably more around the eight-week mark . . . There’s going to be some strength work over time and then slowly building his running.”

Jack Ross, syndesmosis

“(Nathan) Fyfe stood on his ankle (v Fremantle last Sunday) and he rotated a little bit as well. Syndesmosis injuries seem to be more common these days. They are an injury that happens when you get tackled . . . He’s having some surgery tomorrow. What they’ll do in that surgery is wrap the tibia and the fibula, similar to what Dan Butler and Kane Lambert had last year. Timeframe-wise we’re thinking it’s going to be somewhere between the six and eight-week mark. Given he’s a first-year player, obviously we’re going to be a little more cautious.”

Daniel Rioli, corked quad

“Daniel will resume training tomorrow and have a full week of training. He’s recovered quite well.”

Nick Vlastuin, rolled ankle

“Nick, with his ankle, hasn’t run yet. He’ll start running tomorrow. We’ve given him plenty of time to settle. His ankle was blown up like a balloon for most of last week . . . We expect him to be fully training on Friday. I’d say he’s a very good chance to play this week (v Hawthorn).”

Callum Moore, ankle

“Cal had surgery last Wednesday. He had a number of things going on from that incident (in the recent VFL match v Williamstown). Pretty much all his ligaments were damaged quite badly. He had a very small fracture in his calcaneus and he also ruptured some soft tissue, which holds the muscles and tendons around his foot. That’s probably the main issue that we needed to repair and he had surgery to fix that. He’s in plaster at the moment. Tomorrow, he’ll come out of that plaster, he’ll be in a boot for four weeks and then from there, as tolerated, we’ll progress walking, jogging, Alter-G, on the treadmill. It’s looking like an eight-10-week injury.”

Jack Graham, hamstring

“Jack is at about 90% speed at the moment . . . I would anticipate he’d miss this week and be available to play next week, provided he fully trains leading into the Essendon game.”

Trent Cotchin, hamstring

“Trent is at the same point, around that 90%, which we said we’d hold for a period of time, given he had a little interruption a few weeks back . . . Right now he is holding that speed and feeling good. We’ll progress that speed over the next week. We’re looking, at this stage, the Kangaroos game, Round 11, as a return. That should give him at least a week, maybe two weeks, of full skills training.”

Jayden Short, elbow

“’Shorty’ is out of the brace now . . . only just come off in the last 24 hours. He’s now doing his physio exercises. Slowly we’re just getting some movement back into his arm. The transition hopefully will be a fairly quick one, but we’re still looking at the first game after the bye, which is five or six weeks away.”

Jack Riewoldt, PCL

“Jack’s tracking really well. His quad strength is really good at the moment. We’re looking to start jogging in the next two weeks, possibly end of next week the way he’s going.”

Alex Rance, ACL

“Alex is progressing brilliantly. He’s doing absolutely everything he can to push us with his rehab . .
