Don't think Daniel is giving up 17 after winning 3 flags in it.
Apparently Daniel said last week he wants to play 100 games in the #17 and then hand it over to Maurice jnr in 2022 when the latter is more likely to be pushing for senior selection.

MRJ has been waiting to do his quarantine before heading up to the Tiwis to see his mum. As mentioned in the draft combine thread he'll be the last one (126th) to be tested. Shifter Sheahan was pumping him up.

Maurice Rioli (junior)

St Marys, Northern Territory / Scotch College
Height: 179cm
Weight: 75kg
09/01/02

Small forward who first came on the radar when he represented Northern Territory at Under 16 level in 2017 and 2018 and then in the NAB League last year as a bottom ager. Really looked to be taking giant strides forward when he began starring for St Marys in the NTFL early this year before returning to Scotch College in Melbourne and training with the Oakleigh Chargers preparing for 2020. Being the son of Richmond and South Fremantle great Maurice Rioli senior, he is eligible for the Tigers and Dockers under the AFL’s father/son rules. Due to complete his Draft Combine testing in Darwin over the next week and likely to be the next Rioli to join AFL ranks.

Maurice Rioli Jnr nominates his preferred club Richmond (SEN)

REPORT: MAURICE RIOLI JNR NOMINATES HIS PREFERRED CLUB

BY SEN 3
17 October 2020

Reports that paperwork has already been lodged with the AFL for Maurice Rioli Jnr are incorrect, according to AAP.

Shayne Hope is reporting that although the paperwork is yet to be officially filed, Richmond has confirmed that "the process is a mere formality".

The Tigers have until November 25 to lodge the relevant documents.

Talented teenager Maurice Rioli Jnr has nominated his preferred club ahead of next month’s AFL Draft, according to the NT News.

The report indicates that the 18-year-old Tiwi Islander wants to play for Richmond and paperwork has been lodged with the AFL outlining that desire.

Rioli Jnr is eligible to play for both the Tigers and Fremantle under the father-son rule as his dad Maurice Snr was both a Richmond and South Fremantle champion.

The St Mary’s small forward is also eligible for Essendon through their Next Generation Academy which houses the Tiwi Islands in their zone.

It is understood that the Dockers have held several talks with Rioli Jnr, but he is keen to join cousin Daniel at Punt Road and follow in his father’s footsteps.

Interested clubs are able to bid on Rioli Jnr in the Draft meaning the Tigers would have to match any bid to secure his services.

Maurice Jnr is spending most of his time in Melbourne as a student at Scotch College and has been down at Tigerland numerous times over the past few years.

Hopefully we can get MRJ with a late pick but it won't surprise me if Dodoro puts in a bid out of spite ::).

Richmond CEO Brendon Gale ‘excited’ by Maurice Rioli Jnr heading to Tigers despite Fremantle link

The West Australian
19 November 2020

Richmond CEO Brendon Gale says he’s “excited” to add another Rioli to his roster, after Dockers father-son prospect Maurice Rioli Jnr nominated the Tigers as his club of choice.

Rioli Jr, the son of late Richmond and South Fremantle champion Maurice, had the choice of three clubs — the Dockers and Tigers under the father-son rule and Essendon through their Next Generation Academy, or to ignore all three and go into the draft.

On Monday, Rioli Jnr officially lodged his preference with the AFL to join his uncle Daniel Rioli at Richmond.

“We haven’t finalised formalities, but we expect (Rioli Jnr joining) will be case,” Gale said on SEN.

“It will only be a matter of time.”

Gale said the 18-year-old had plenty of talent, despite missing much of the 2020 season due to COVID restrictions.

“Unfortunately we haven’t been able to see him play much this year,” Gale lamented.

(He’s a) different sort of player to Daniel.

“Does his best work in a telephone box, that’s how he sort of plays. He’s quick and powerful, but he’s got a lot of work.”

Gale said he suspected Rioli Jnr nominated the Tigers due to his close relationship with his nephew, after going to school in Melbourne in recent years.

“Look he’s had a fair bit to do with the club in recent years… He’s very close with Daniel.”

Rioli Jr is rated among the best small forward draft prospects in this year’s crop by AFL talent ambassador Kevin Sheehan.

Bizarre bird attack ruined Maurice Rioli Jnr’s 2km time trial (Foxsports)

‘It was comical’: Bizarre bird attack that ruined father-son gun Rioli’s key test

FOX SPORTS

Richmond father-son prospect Maurice Rioli Jnr has suffered a series of unfortunate events, leading to the small forward being unable to complete his 2km time trial.

With no AFL draft combine in 2020, individual states have had to run events, with the 18-year-old attempting the run over the weekend.

But in bizarre circumstances, Rioli was stopped by a group of plovers and was unable to finish the run.

An email was sent to all AFL clubs in recent days, outlining how Rioli was attacked on the run before completing the circuit, with recruiting staff perplexed at the unlucky situation and amused at a response by a long-time list manager in an email chain.

Foxfooty.com.au understands Rioli has made a full recovery from the incident.

“When we received that email, having grown up in the country I know what being attack by a plover is like and it’s not pleasant, they’re almost as aggressive as magpies,” Sydney Swans list manager Kinnear Beatson told AFL Media’s Road to the Draft podcast.

“But I couldn’t help myself, I was laughing when I read it. I actually replied all… (saying) ‘in my time in recruiting which is in excess of 30 years, you wouldn’t believe how often incidents like this occur’.

“In particular I wrote cheekily, in fact there was one draft combine in Canberra where a wedge-tailed eagle swooped out and plucked a player off the track. I just left it at that.

“I did get a lot of funny texts and calls from the recruiting and list management fraternity. It just seemed so funny, you picture a young player try to dodge and weave and avoid a plover attack.

“I’ve never heard a reason like that as to why a player couldn’t complete his testing. It was quite comical.”

Beatson suggested recruiting personnel around Australia had to do plenty of googling to establish what the animal was, given many were metropolitan based people.

“They didn’t even know what a plover was. Their knowledge of our fauna has increased significantly.”

Rioli will join Richmond as a father-son selection at December’s draft.

Q. Do you see either Freo or Essendon forcing the tigers to take Rioli earlier then expected?

Twomey: I think Maurice Rioli Jnr will be a late/rookie pick for the Tigers. This year would have been interesting to see how he went at the Oakleigh Chargers but it wasn't to be. He's got some talent, though.

Maurice Rioli jnr and the attack of the plovers

Michael Gleeson
The Age
November 20, 2020 — 2.38pm

Even by the standards of the storied history of the Rioli family this is quite the tale.

Maurice Rioli jnr was recently required to attend his own pre-draft testing – sort of like his own AFL draft combine – to be put through a range of athletics tests by AFL NT talent manager Simon Hargrave.

All was going swimmingly. It was hot, but for Darwin not too hot, just 31.4 degrees as Maurice took to the starting line for the two-kilometre time trial.

His first lap was strong. He didn’t finish his second lap.

“On lap 2 of the time trial … he was attacked by plovers that must have nests nearby, resulting in Maurice having to pull up,” Hargrave explained in an emailed report to all AFL recruiting and list managers this week.

“Upon returning to the start position Maurice was complaining of knee soreness from the vertical jump testing, which hadn’t been previously reported prior to starting the 2km trial.

“Due to his knee soreness and Maurice returning to the Tiwi Islands he has not completed the 2km time trial aspect of the combine testing. I can advise though his first 400m split for the time trial though was 66 seconds.”
