Nightcliff defeated St Mary's by 13 pts.

Maurice jnr was moving okay again towards the end after the cramp went away. Aside from kicking St Mary's first goal he had a quiet game. He didn't have the impact he had in the other finals. The hype that was building might settle down a bit which may be a good thing for us come draft time. The commentators did say earlier in the game that they believe Maurice jnr is ahead of where Daniel and Willy was at the same age.

Rioli just before on wing cleverly tapped the ball upwards and then gathered and burst away. He's got speed and tricks. Too bad he got overexcited and bombed it from 60 out.

Maurice Rioli Jr on track to follow in famous family footsteps

Matt Turner
The Australian
August 22, 2020

As one Rioli returns to the Northern Territory in Richmond colours, another is edging closer to following in his trailblazing father’s footsteps with the Tigers.

Maurice Rioli Jr — the son of the late Richmond and South Fremantle champion Maurice Rioli Sr, and cousin of current Tiger Daniel Rioli — is generating hype among recruiters after starring for AFLNT club St Mary’s over summer.

Dreamtime game rivals Essendon and the Tigers, who face off in Darwin on Saturday night, both have priority access to Maurice Jr in this year’s draft — the Bombers via their Next Generation Academy and Richmond as a father-son pick.

Fremantle also can take him as a father-son choice.

But the 175cm small forward, who boards at Melbourne’s Scotch College and is aligned to NAB League side Oakleigh Chargers, favours a move to Richmond. His dad is a club great with the Tigers as a three-time All-Australian, dual best and fairest and the first Indigenous player in the league to win a Norm Smith Medal, and fellow Tiwi Islands product Daniel has claimed two flags there.

St Mary’s co-captain Shannon Rioli said Maurice Jr had the classic Rioli traits exhibited by his other cousins, ex-Hawthorn star Cyril and West Coast goalsneak Willie: fierce tackling, repeat efforts, pace and an eye for goals.

“He’s a jet,” Shannon told The Weekend Australian.

“We keep saying with every Rioli that comes through, but he could be the best of the lot.

“He’s already been doing stuff with Richmond and I know other teams would be keen on him — they’d be silly if they weren’t.

“We knew he was pretty handy and from a young age he was always better than most kids his age, but last season he did some pretty special things. The way he’s going, it’s looking like Richmond.”

The hype grew in February after Rioli kicked four goals in a best-on-ground performance in a semi-final for St Mary’s, where his father began his career.

Former AFLNT talent manager Brenton Toy called Maurice Jr a ripping young man who had come a long way.

“He’s always been around footy and showed glimpses of brilliance, but as he grew into his body he showed he had everything — the attitude, intensity, footy smarts and cleverness around goals, but like his dad, his tackle pressure was outstanding,” Toy said.

Maurice Jr spent last season playing for Scotch, Northern Territory and St Mary’s, only lining up in a pre-season trial for Oakleigh Chargers, before Victorian competitions were shut down this year.

“He does some really flashy things and has got great ball control … and he would’ve played Round 1 for us, for sure,” Chargers talent manager Jy Bond said.

St Mary's captain Shannon Rioli praises AFL prospect Maurice.

Maurice Rioli jr's humility like his late great father is his best asset ahead of AFL combine.

Shifter Sheahan on SEN talking about Maurice Jnr.

* Available to go to three clubs - Richmond (F/S), Fremantle (F/S), Essendon (Zone). All three clubs would be talking to him.

* Maurice showed glimpses in the NTFL which had people excited to see him play.

* The coach at the Oakleigh Chargers is helping him with his development.

* It should be noted Maurice's cousin Daniel only came on late in his 18th year. He couldn't get a game with his school at 17. But late in his 18th year he improved dramatically and it was no real surprise he was eventually taken in the first round.

From yesterday's Herald-Sun:

There have been suggestions that the Rioli in this AFL draft could be the "best of the lot"

From Knightmare on BF:

Rioli is one I've had to search online for some match footage of and in watching a few of his games he's won me over, as I'd noticed little of him last year.

My next power rankings are in December, and I'll have to consider whether I include him inside my top-20. He could be just in or just out. He'd be inside my top-30 now for sure.

Watching his forward pressure, tackling, those second, third, fourth efforts. He also looks great with ball in hand, just has that instinctive feel and makes opponents look silly with how quick his mind to body connection is and how he moves with ball in hand and creates time and space for himself so effortlessly. He can win his own ball and is excellent at ground level. He's a talent and for mine a little better than Daniel Rioli. If recruiters have been paying attention, a bid in the first round is justifiable, and if not, with how highly clubs rate small forwards these days it would be a shock not to see a bid come for him in the second round.
