MOCK TEAMS: Who's in your club's best 22 for round one?

afl.com.au
11 March 2021

RICHMOND

B: David Astbury, Dylan Grimes, Nick Vlastuin
HB: Liam Baker, Noah Balta, Nathan Broad
C: Josh Caddy, Dustin Martin, Jayden Short
HF: Kane Lambert, Tom Lynch, Jason Castagna
F: Daniel Rioli, Jack Riewoldt, Shai Bolton
Foll: Toby Nankervis, Shane Edwards, Trent Cotchin
I/C: Jack Graham, Kamdyn McIntosh, Dion Prestia, Jake Aarts

EMERG: Marlion Pickett, Mabior Chol, Riley Collier-Dawkins, Hugo Ralphsmith

NEW: Nil

UNAVAILABLE: Callum Coleman-Jones (suspension), Noah Cumberland (knee), Bachar Houli (calf), Ivan Soldo (knee)

NOTES: It is again a very settled line-up at Richmond, with Prestia considered likely to play against Carlton after his hamstring injury and Lynch a lock after his toe niggle. Houli is set to miss with his calf injury, with all the rest of last year's premiership winners to be available. Caddy's form will see him break in after missing last year's flag and it could be at the expense of Pickett. Chol as a second ruck could be considered, while Collier-Dawkins impressed late in last week's AAMI Community Series clash with Collingwood as he chases a debut.  – Callum Twomey

CARLTON

B: Sam Docherty, Jacob Weitering, Lachie Plowman
HB: Sam Petrevski-Seton, Liam Jones, Adam Saad
C: Jack Newnes, Patrick Cripps, Will Setterfield
HF: Marc Murphy, Harry McKay, Jack Martin
F: Lachie Fogarty, Levi Casboult, Zac Fisher
FOLL: Marc Pittonet, Sam Walsh, Ed Curnow
I/C: Jack Silvagni, Paddy Dow, David Cuningham, Tom Williamson

EMG: Lochie O'Brien, Eddie Betts, Michael Gibbons, Oscar McDonald

NEW: Lachie Fogarty, Adam Saad

UNAVAILABLE: Zac Williams (suspension), Mitch McGovern (back), Tom De Koning (back), Brodie Kemp (foot), Caleb Marchbank (calf), Nic Newman (knee), Charlie Curnow (knee), Sam Philp (hip)

NOTES: The injury list is extensive, but could be soothed if McKay (ankle), Casboult (knee) and Newnes (ankle) are able to prove their fitness. Betts is fit following a summer calf injury, but whether the club feels he’s ready to be thrown straight into the action after missing both practice matches is another story. Expect a patient approach with the veteran. Fogarty comes into the side for his club debut. His addition into the forward line, along with Murphy and Fisher spending more time in attack, forces Gibbons to the outer. Saad is also in for his Blues debut, but fellow new recruit Williams is sidelined through suspension. That could mean more midfield minutes for Walsh and Curnow, with Dow and Cuningham also handed an opportunity to impress. Silvagni replaces McGovern (back) and Curnow (knee) as another marking target in the forward line. - Riley Beveridge

Think they’ve got our 22 spot on. Only change I can see is if they go for the 2 man ruck system and bring marbs in.

Wouldn't be dropping Pickett for Caddy.

Just leave Aarts out for now.

In his more youthful Carlton days amd even in his prime in Adelaide Bett’s absolutely torched us. I remember being terrified of opposition small forwards back in the Wallace days.

WHO'S BOLTING INTO THE ROUND 1 SELECTION MIX AT YOUR CLUB?

Andrew Slevison
SEN
13 March 2021

RICHMOND - No firm candidate

It’s highly unlikely that Richmond will blood any inexperienced players in Round 1.

Veteran half-back Bachar Houli is set to miss with a calf injury but he appears the only casualty from the Grand Final side that beat Geelong.

Jake Aarts has pushed his case to break back into the side after some strong pre-season form, but can’t be considered a bolter after playing 14 games including the Qualifying Final last year.

Likewise the experienced Josh Caddy who could force Marlion Pickett out.

Of the untried youngsters, Will Martyn looks most likely to break through but perhaps not until later in the year, while Riley Collier-Dawkins is in the mix.

Noah will definitely play!

Will they Pick him for round 1? Pickett on edge at Richmond (Age)

Will they Pick him? Pickett on edge at Richmond

Daniel Cherny
The Age
March 14, 2021 — 2.00pm

Dual Richmond premiership player Marlion Pickett faces a nervous wait to see if he is selected for the season-opener against Carlton as the reigning premiers weigh up a selection squeeze ahead of Thursday night’s MCG date with the Blues.

While some premiership teams have to contend with considerable off-season and pre-season attrition, the Tigers do not fit into that category, with only Bachar Houli (calf) unavailable from the 22 that beat Geelong on the last Saturday night of the season at the Gabba a little under five months ago.

Josh Caddy, another two-time premiership Tiger, missed selection for last year’s decider but a strong pre-season has left him in the box seat to regain his spot in Damien Hardwick’s side on the night Richmond are set to unfurl both the 2019 and 2020 premiership flags.

Pressure forward Jake Aarts, who was dropped after the Tigers’ qualifying loss to the Brisbane Lions, featured in both of Richmond’s AFL practice matches so far this season as he stakes his claim for a senior berth against the Blues.

Pickett, 29, played in the reserves when the Tigers played Melbourne last month but was back in the seniors for the narrow win against Collingwood.

But he was the sole AFL premiership player who lined up for the Tigers in their VFL practice match against Essendon on Friday, just six days before the AFL season-opener.

Despite him appearing at the lower level so late in the pre-season, sources indicated Pickett had not yet been ruled out for round one. Instead the Tigers had been keen to see him play as a defender, where he could help fill the void left by All-Australian backman Houli.

Pickett played solidly against the Dons at Tullamarine, with Hardwick watching on closely.

Fringe tall Mabior Chol also impressed in the game, while defender Derek Eggmolesse-Smith was also prominent days after securing his spot on the Tigers’ list for 2021.

Having memorably made his AFL debut in the 2019 grand final, Pickett was dropped early last season but bounced back to play 19 senior games for the season and claim a second AFL premiership medallion.

While Richmond are fighting fit, the Blues will need Jack Newnes (ankle), Levi Casboult (knee) and Harry McKay (ankle) to prove their readiness for the clash. Eddie Betts (calf) is available after missing last year’s season-opener. Zac Williams (suspension), Tom De Koning (back), Brodie Kemp (foot), Caleb Marchbank (calf), Nic Newman (knee) and Charlie Curnow (knee) are all set to miss Thursday night’s game at a half-full ’G. Mitch McGovern (back) is all but certain to miss too.

Every AFL club’s predicted line-up for Round 1

David Zita and Ben Waterworth
Fox Sports
March 15th, 2021

RICHMOND

B: David Astbury, Dylan Grimes, Nick Vlastuin

HB: Jayden Short, Noah Balta, Liam Baker

C: Josh Caddy, Dion Prestia, Shane Edwards

HF: Kane Lambert, Jack Riewoldt, Dustin Martin

F: Jason Castagna, Tom Lynch, Daniel Rioli

FOLL: Toby Nankervis, Trent Cotchin, Shai Bolton

I/C: Jack Graham, Jake Aarts, Kamdyn McIntosh, Nathan Broad

Again, Richmond enters the season with not much to be concerned about from an injury standpoint, barring the absence of Ivan Soldo. Star defender Bachar Houli will return to the side before too long while Tom Lynch will be good to go despite missing the AAMI Community Series. Mabior Chol is waiting in the wings if Damien Hardwick decides he wants another ruck option. Marlion Pickett is the unlucky one in this line-up, but the signs have been there throughout the pre-season with him sitting out a fair chunk of games. Jake Aarts has stormed his way back into the side after being left out for much of the finals series.

He's been humming: Gun Tigers set to pass final fitness test

Trent Cotchin expects Tom Lynch and Dion Prestia to be right to take on Carlton on Thursday night

By Shayne Hope

RICHMOND is likely to be bolstered by the inclusion of star duo Tom Lynch and Dion Prestia for Thursday night's season-opener against Carlton.

Both were absent from the Tigers' final practice match, with key forward Lynch battling a toe issue and midfielder Prestia sidelined by a hamstring complaint.

But captain Trent Cotchin on Monday indicated the pair will be fit to play as Richmond unfurl their 2019 and 2020 premiership flags in front of up to 50,000 fans at the MCG.

The Tigers have an almost clean bill of health, with Bachar Houli (calf) the only senior player ruled out at this stage.

"(Lynch) has been humming around the track the last couple of weeks," Cotchin said.

"Both have trained really well this (last) week so I'd be surprised if either of them weren't fit to play on Thursday night.

"But we have another main session tomorrow, which is just another final tick of approval.

"We've been really lucky with regards to injury, and the guys are fighting fit and really looking forward to getting back out there and playing footy."

The AFL is still hopeful that the 50 per cent crowd cap may be raised by Victorian government authorities in the coming days.

The traditional season-opener attracted attendances of more than 85,000 at the start of the 2018 and 2019 seasons before the coronavirus pandemic saw the match played behind closed doors last year.

"We've sort of forgotten exactly how loud both of our crowds can be," Cotchin said.

"That will be incredibly exciting and the 'G, for whatever reason, always has that little bit of extra buzz and sends chills down the back of your spine."

Richmond has won their last 10 meetings with Carlton since going down in the 2013 elimination final.

"I don't think that means anything at all - this is a fresh season," Cotchin said.

"Carlton have improved significantly and played some really good footy last year.

"I can only imagine that they've done a mountain of work throughout the summer and we're really looking forward to that challenge."
