CARLTON v RICHMOND
Thursday March 17, 7:25pm at the MCG

RICHMOND - Team Tips:

The Tigers named a strong side for their final practice match ahead of Round 1, but were without injured trio Nick Vlaustin, Kane Lambert and Jack Graham. Graham and Vlastuin (both hamstring) are both in doubt to play Round 1, while Lambert (hip) could be set to spent several months on the sidelines as the club ponders sending him in for surgery. A Round 1 debut looms for Pick 9 Josh Gibcus after slotting into the Tigers’ new-look back six seamlessly alongside recruit Robbie Tarrant; the pair’s inclusions would help replace Dylan Grimes, with the new club co-captain essentially ruling himself out on Wednesday following thumb surgery. Grimes said he would miss “a couple of weeks”, per AFL Media.

CARLTON - Team Tips:

The Blues are set to welcome back Charlie Curnow and Jacob Weitering, who were both rested for last Thursday’s AAMI Community Series clash against Melbourne, to give Michael Voss’ side a massive boost at either end of the ground. The key position pair could replace Oscar McDonald and Tom De Koning. Sam Docherty has put himself right in the frame for an inspirational return to the senior side after racking up 38 disposals in a VFL practice match against the Casey Demons, with Jordan Boyd the one who could make way for the ex-skipper. Corey Durdin impressed with two goals in the first half before leaving the field with a calf injury, but Voss said post-match it was nothing to worry about. Sam Walsh is making a shock bid for an early return for a syndesmosis injury suffered a month ago. Originally expected to miss 8-10 weeks, the superstar midfielder is “chomping at the bit for Round 1” according to captain Patrick Cripps, though Round 2 or 3 looks more likely.

Going by training it doesn't look like Floss will be playing round 1  :-\. So that will be another significant out along with Grimesy. Good news though that Graham is back training fully. Hopefully he now gets up to play  :pray.

My current guess at our 22 for round 1:

B:   Broad                          Gibcus                  Mansell
HB: Short                           Tarrant                 D.Rioli
C:   Edwards                      Prestia                  McIntosh
HF:  Bolton                         Lynch                   Baker
F:  Castagna                     Riewoldt                  Balta
R: Nankervis                     Cotchin                  Martin
Int: Soldo   Graham    Ralphsmith      Ross

23rd man sub:  Aarts

Injured: Grimes, Vlastuin, Lambert.

- Don't think Aarts should be in the '23' but it's who I think Dimma will go with based on preseason team selection.

- If Balta does play as a forward then Miller could come in. Depends if Dimma is willing to go with Gibcus in his first game as a 2nd tall or not and if Dimma is willing or not to move Balta back into defence if Carlton's tall forwards start getting on top.

Seems like we're trying to fit Aarts in I don't like that .Dow ,Hugo and RCD better options.

MOCK TEAMS: Who's in your club's best 22 for round 1

Callum Twomey & Riley Beveridge
afl.com.au
11 March 2022

RICHMOND

B: Josh Gibcus, Robbie Tarrant, Daniel Rioli
HB: Jayden Short, Nathan Broad, Nick Vlastuin
C: Kamdyn McIntosh, Trent Cotchin, Shane Edwards
HF: Shai Bolton, Noah Balta, Liam Baker
F: Tom Lynch, Jack Riewoldt, Jason Castagna
Foll: Toby Nankervis, Dion Prestia, Dustin Martin
I/C: Ivan Soldo, Hugo Ralphsmith, Jack Ross, Jake Aarts

EMERG: Will Martyn, Bigoa Nyuon, Marlion Pickett, Maurice Rioli

NEW: Robbie Tarrant, Josh Gibcus, Bigoa Nyuon

UNAVAILABLE: Kane Lambert (hip), Jack Graham (hamstring), Dylan Grimes (thumb)

NOTES:  The Tigers look set to be without co-captain Grimes due to a thumb injury suffered in the AAMI Community Series, but Vlastuin is pushing to return from his hamstring injury to face the Blues. Ralphsmith has looked good in the pre-season off half-back while Nyuon could be a chance in the backline to replace Grimes if the Tigers want to look that way. Gibcus appears set for a round one debut after being the club's top pick at last year's NAB AFL Draft, with Balta sent forward this season.

CARLTON

B: Mitch McGovern, Jacob Weitering, Sam Docherty
HB: Zac Williams, Oscar McDonald, Adam Saad
C: Lochie O'Brien, Adam Cerra, Will Setterfield
HF: Matt Kennedy, Charlie Curnow, Zac Fisher
F: Jack Silvagni, Harry McKay, Corey Durdin
FOLL: Marc Pittonet, Patrick Cripps, George Hewett
I/C: Tom De Koning, Jack Martin, Nic Newman, Matt Owies

EMG: Brodie Kemp, Lachie Plowman, Jack Newnes, Ed Curnow

NEW: Adam Cerra, George Hewett

UNAVAILABLE: Liam Stocker (syndesmosis), Sam Walsh (syndesmosis), Caleb Marchbank (knee), David Cuningham (knee), Josh Honey (knee)

NOTES: The big watch is on Docherty, who returned via a VFL practice match last Thursday and may still have work to do to prove his fitness for round one. He racked up 38 touches, which could put him in line to play, but Plowman will be on standby if he doesn't. The Blues will weigh up whether to play two rucks in Pittonet and De Koning, along with Silvagni. However, the fact their round one opponents the Tigers have a depleted backline could tempt Michael Voss to go tall and throw all of them into the mix. McGovern is down back, McDonald should get the nod ahead of new recruit Lewis Young, while Durdin and Owies will likely start as the small forwards after impressive pre-seasons on the track.

Callum Twomey on the AFL website has Aarts in the side for round 1.

-----------------------------

Jake Aarts v Maurice Rioli jnr

Aarts has been a mainstay of Richmond's line-up for the past two years, playing 35 games across the 2020-21 campaigns, including all bar one game last season. He brings important pressure and defensive actions inside the forward-50 and can also hit the scoreboard after kicking 18 goals last year. He will hold his spot for round one against the Blues but a position battle could be one to watch at a point this season with Rioli, who played the last two games of 2021 and also had some game time against Hawthorn in the AAMI Community Series. Rioli has some tricks as a small forward and will excite Tigers fans so could get some more exposure this year. - Callum Twomey

He has earned his position. Until someone takes it from him which will be hard as he fights for every scrap, he stays.

Seems Twomey still has Aarts as a small forward in our side when he's being training with our mids this preseason and played as a mid in both Community Series matches. So Aarts is competing with the likes of Ross, Dow, RCD and Sonsie IMV and is obviously behind all our premiership mids in the pecking order. Based on line groupings, our three small forwards at this stage will be George, Bolton and Baker.  Maurice Jnr is a fair way off. He's not going to get a game ahead of those guys. He needs time in the VFL to work on many aspects of his game. None of our cubs have had that chance over the past two years with the VFL cancelled due to covid.
