Probably time to move the Cotch chat out.

Anyone know how Sonsie went in the VFL?

Yeah any reports on the vfl game other than the one on the rfc website? Not much details for each player provided on that. Not just sonsie but Cumberland, clarke, Hugo, Ryan…

Lot of ifs in there.

Sonsie hasn’t done any match sim. He’s a second year player. I think they’re pretty well justified not throwing him straight into the cauldron in round 1.

Gibcus is injured. Suspect that’ll keep him out until around the bye rounds and even then will have to win his spot over Tarrant, Balta, Broad and Grimes.

Clarke impressed in the preseason and seems likely to be rewarded with a place in round 1.

Brown is injured and banks hasn’t come close to winning a spot in the seniors yet.

As for Miller and Ryan. Agree 1 needs to be playing the second ruck/resting fwd role. You’ve got to accept that you are in a very small minority that thinks we should be playing all of Lynch, Jack, Nank, Miller and Ryan. You’ve been presenting this opinion like it’s the general consensus but I really haven’t seen many if any agree. That is one tall too many imo. 3 permanent tall forwards + the resting ruck makes us even more pedestrian down there then we showed we were in the preseason. Can already imagine teams rebounding out of there with ease. Jury is out on jack having another season in him, but tbh if he wasn’t going around again I would be inclined to trial Lynch and Dusty as the CHF/FF partnership and instead have another small or mid in as jacks replacement. Say what you will about Dusty’s form over the last couple of seasons, it would take a brave brave defender to leave him to go and double team Lynch. That is Of course unless a tall on our list shows that they are better placed in that role which you may be right in that we won’t really know this unless we trial them at afl level.

I think this is meant for me. Where have i asked for Miller and Ryan to be played other than in the context of Tarrant being injured and Miller plays F/B and Ryan plays as the second ruck/fwd. Are you deliberately being disingenuous.

Would like to see how many teams i have put up with all four in the fwd half
Reckon i have consistently put up  this or damn close to it.

Rioli/Clarke - Riewoldt - Ryan/Miller that means one of. ::)
Cumberland - Lynch - Bolton.

When Tarrant is back then one of Miller or Ryan plays second ruck third tall fwd and one will have to miss out. I think that is pretty much a consensus around here and a line i have pushed pretty hard. Any one who thinks we don't need to get games into another tall up fwd  is wrong imo.

Have toyed with the idea of finding a way to play both Miller and Ryan that would mean one as a permanent fwd and one as a ruckman
Coming from the bench with Nankervis. But mainly its been one or the other playing and i think a permanent tall fwd would be the best option of all hence why i was so pleased we took Bradtke and why i think Balta should be persevered as a fwd when Gibcus and Tarrant are fit.

There is nothing to stop us playing JR TL and one of SR, or BM as a ruck/fwd  kpf or third tall, nothing.
Sheesh we play Jack Tom and Dusty and Dusty is not renowned for his defensive efforts or running.

Dusty has been injured and had serious family issues because of them his form has been lousy.
He is now in his 30's done every thing that can be done in footy  nothing wrong in asking if he has the hunger and if father time has not caught up to him a bit.
My opinion on Dusty has been and remains he is a mid who should be played primarily as a mid with some short stints thru the fwd half probably alternating with one of Ryan or Miller if we play one of them. I have been firmly against the Cotchin move fwd it just denies kids like Cumberland Clarke and even Sonsie the opportunity to play.

I think we'll see Jack rested in blocks this season - ie between rounds 6-9 & 14-18 - at minimum. This will give Ryan his chance to work alongside Lynch. If he plays well then the selectors will have a dilemma and that may mean we try working with three talls. My only problem with this is Dimma's forward pressure requirement. We have dropped Cumberland, our best up-and-coming forward of last year, for an average Mansell purely based on Mansell's superior defensive skills. If we have Lynch, Jack, Ryan, Dusty, Bolton and Cotchin/Mansell/Taranto (resting mid) then we have lost all of our F50 pressure. Swap in MJR and it isn't enough to force the turnovers we need. The bare standard appears two mid to small-sized defensive-minded forwards - that doesn't bode well for the idea of playing three talls.

For mine, I'd be happy to have Lynch, Jack and Ryan all lining up together if Dusty was moved back into the midfield (drifting forward). I don't believe we can have Dusty and Bolton in the same forward line. They are both too goal focused and give too much space to their opponents. I'd rather Bolton and Dusty rotating through the same spot, from forward to mid. This would free up a spot.

Anyway, at the moment, Dimma is trying too hard to fit in all the midfielders he now has to the detriment of our forward balance. Ryan and Cumberland deserve a shot but both might need to wait a few weeks unfortunately.

What did we all think of Sonsie's first game back for the year?

15 disposals (8k, 7h, 4c, 11u, 80% eff.)
2 marks
2 F50 tackles
2 inside 50s
171 metres gained
2 intercepts
1 free for
4 score involvements
81% time on ground

Better for the run.

I think he'll improve with more games.

Like JC, keep him in.

100% and every day of the week.  On his game i thought he was a bit fumbly, conditions maybe an excuse or first game back getting used to the pace. Either way  we want him in the team to be super clean.

Here's the vision of the incident:

WATCH HERE: https://twitter.com/7AFL/status/1693122846313120198

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------

From the HeraldSun:

Richmond’s emerging young midfielder Tyler Sonsie faces a lengthy VFL suspension for a brain fade that saw him felling opponent Tom Cappellari on Sunday.

Sonsie’s left-handed strike to the jaw of North Melbourne player Cappellari is certain to draw a multi-week suspension that could impact the start of his 2024 season.

The Tigers won through to a VFL elimination final but he is sure to miss that clash, with the No.28 draft pick a player who Richmond believes is a key part of their midfield for the next era.

Cappellari immediately grabbed at his jaw and went to ground in the final-quarter incident, with Sonsie to be dealt with by the VFL match review system.

Under that system Paddy McCartin was handed a five-week suspension in 2021 for a vicious strike on his opponent.

Sonsie’s hit was not as forceful but could easily be a three or four-week ban.

Under VFL rules the match review panel assesses suspensions and can offer discounts if players plead guilty early.

But the off-the-ball nature of Sonsie’s strike could see him sent straight to the tribunal.

Richmond’s round 22 VFL win put them into the new-look wildcard round for the VFL, with the Roos’ percentage also seeing them through to the VFL wildcard round.

With Trent Cotchin retiring alongside Jack Riewoldt there is another midfield spot open for player like Sonsie to become AFL regulars.

But unless the Tigers’ VFL side pushes deep into the VFL finals he could face a significantly delayed start to the season.

His coaches should be ropable.  Wish he attacked the footy with as much vigour as the push.  Anything under 4 weeks should be considered a win.

At least he showed some aggression!!!!. Apparently very misplaced. going by most reports of his season he has lacked a bit when it comes to contact. If true certainly one area he will need to improve next year.

‘Did not look good!’ Young Tiger Tyler Sonsie facing one of AFL’s biggest bans in years for brutal strike

Fox Footy from Fox Sports
August 21st, 2023 5:47 pm

Richmond young gun Tyler Sonsie is facing one of the biggest suspensions in years after an ugly off-the-ball strike at VFL level on Sunday.

With his side leading by two goals late in the match, Sonsie appeared to lose his cool and lash out at North Melbourne opponent Tom Cappellari.

Vision shows the duo tangle over the boundary line in the match at the Swinburne Centre in Melbourne before Sonsie reacts.

Getting to his feet, Sonsie goes back at Cappellari and appears to land a blow to the chin of the Roo.

Cappellari is then seen clutching at his face on the turf in worrying scenes.

Sonsie has since been charged with striking, graded intentional, severe and high contact. He was referred directly to the VFL Tribunal and is facing a minimum sanction of five games.

“It seems as though there’s been a very significant incident at the VFL,” journalist Sam McLure said on 3AW.

“Richmond youngster Tyler Sonsie … has lashed out at Tom Cappellari a North Melbourne VFL player.

“From what I could see, it was a left fist that caught Cappellari somewhere on the chin – certainly in the upper region.

“It was completely off the ball.

“There’s two sides to every story but the vision did not look good.”

Sonsie had been in line for a possible senior recall in the final round after playing a starring role in that VFL clash.

He finished with a team-high 23 disposals, three clearances, two inside 50s and a goal.
