SAM EDMUND'S TRADE UPDATE FEATURING RICHMOND’S “RECRUITING FLEX”

SEN
6 September 2022

Tim Taranto, Jacob Hopper & Richmond

“What an extraordinary recruiting flex that was from the Tigers yesterday that meeting with the contracted giant Jacob Hoper that Damien Hardwick confirmed on AFL360 took place,” Edmund began on SEN's Whateley.

“They’ve already got Tim Taranto on the hook down there on a very good deal I might add, and a long-term Jacob Hopper as well?

“We’re not privy to the books, we don’t know the bottom line, clearly they can do it financially, but how do they do it in a trade sense?

“We’ve got those figures in front of us. They’ve got their first-round pick, Pick 12 as it stands at the moment. They’ve got two second-rounders, their own but one tied to North Melbourne which is handy, that sits at 19 at the moment.

“So 12, 19, I think there’s a 30, and then you go all the way back. So how do they do it from a trade point of view?

“Taranto is not contracted just Jacob Hopper clearly is, he’s also being courted by Geelong and clearly wants to come home, he’s just got to settle on his destination.

“So what sort of trade for those two prime midfielders would possibly satisfy the Giants? That’s got the whole industry scratching their heads saying, ‘how could they possibly do this’?

“The people that I’ve spoken to - list managers and player managers this morning – are genuinely bewildered as to how it would possibly happen.

“Does another club have to get involved, are there future picks involved? GWS as we know needs to ease the squeeze, but they’re not going to be railroaded into giving up quality players for nothing.

“And do Geelong still have a role to play in Hopper, we know how far down the Hopper path the Cats have gone, they wanted their own double act, they want Hopper and (Brodie) Grundy to come in.

“It’s a good choice to have for Jacob Hopper. Am I going to Richmond or am I going to Geelong? Both want me, I want to come home, great to have options.”

Tiger71 on the BF Tigercast:

* Taranto a lock. Not 750k mentioned in the media either. He wants to come to us as we can do a fair deal with GWS.

* Hopper to Tigerland now 70% confident.

* Both will get lengthy deals so we can 'middle-end' the contracts after 2024 when Dusty and Lynch come out of contract. Any new deal for Lynch [to be extended next year] will be less than what he is on now. So that we'll free up around $2 million of the cap for 2025 and beyond. Reckons Dusty's contract was front-ended last year for 2022 so he's been paid in advance. That salary will increase by 5% next year and by 20-25% over the next 5 years. So along with the retirements we will have the space for both Taranto and Hopper as well as to afford any future increases in salaries for our own youngsters.

* We have the picks this and next year to trade with. Geelong don't. GWS also still not happy either about Geelong grabbing Jeremy Cameron.

* We want to keep pick 19. So we'll use picks 12, 30, our 1st next year and players to get both deals done. He mentioned 12+30 or 12+next year's first plus a player (assuming he meant a player in both set of picks scenarios).

* Kingsley will evaluate the GWS list and then work out what the Giants need and then ask for Tigers he would like given he knows our list intimately. We've got to trade for Hopper [he also doesn't want to screw his old club either] so we'll have to be prepared to give up someone good. Not Soldo as GWS have rucks coming through. The Giants are screaming for forwards and quick half-back flankers. So Ryan (as a forward), Hugo .... are the sorts Tiger71 feels potentially could go north.

* If we can get both Taranto and Hopper we'll be in a big shot for Green when he finally comes out of contract.

* Needs to confirm if we're after a 22-24 year old lead up/hit up forward he's been told about. Not an A-grader. Limited opportunities but dominating where he is playing.

* Initially said that he was told last night that Stack is "gone". Later modified it to "it's not looking good for him".

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Sag_ieYTCjc
Jon Ralph on the HeraldSun website is saying Stack is staying.

Trade buzz: Another Giants gun ‘wants to join Richmond’

Richmond will secure GWS star Tim Taranto in a trade, and could land a massive one-two punch with another Giant signalling he wants to be a Tiger. Get all the trade latest.

Trent Cotchin will play on at Richmond on a one-year deal.

Cotchin has enjoyed his season playing excellent injury-free football and has also thrived with less responsibilities after he handed over the captaincy.

Richmond will secure GWS mid Tim Taranto, having had strong recommendations about his massive tank, which will allow him to defensively run in a midfield that often plays Shai Bolton and Dustin Martin as more offensively-minded onballers.
Taranto is also seen as a potential future captain by the Tigers, who will also sign up Sydney Stack.

Coach Damien Hardwick also revealed the club has met with GWS clearance beast Jacob Hopper, who has one year to run on his contract but has been linked to Geelong.

“We did meet with Jacob Hopper today ... it’s not something I feel overly comfortable about,” Hardwick said on AFL360.

“But the fact of the matter is he’s a quality player and wants to come. We’re hoping to facilitate that for him.”

The Herald Sun reported on Monday Jack Riewoldt was happy to play on a $300,000 deal as long as the club made sure he was a wanted player next year.

Is he played out of position in defence? He was a pretty high draft pick from memory and rated above avg leading into the draft?

Dimma sounds confident on Hooper.

Still have my doubt we can afford them all but if the reports are true then I'd be keen on Hopper if he passes a medical.

Him and Taranto would rejuvenate our midfield big time.

Then we just need to find another key forward - can Miller be the forward/ruck option we need? Bauer developing/depth.

Grimes, Broad, Balta, Gibcus and Tarrant down back. Biggie depth.

Nank first ruck, Miller relief, Ryan depth and Collina development.

Sounds alright to me.

I mean Dimma admitted they met with hopper and with the club making all these resignings over the past few weeks you’d think that at the very least they’ve worked out they have the cap space for both. Putting together a trade package that the club is happy to depart with and that gws are satisfied with might be trickier.
