Greater Western Sydney to play hard-ball in Richmond Tigers’ pursuit of midfielder Jacob Hopper

Jackson Barrett
The West Australian
12 September 2022

Jackson Barrett

It’s not going to be easy for Richmond to prise in-demand midfielder Jacob Hopper out of Greater Western Sydney.

The Giants are playing hard-ball as Victorian clubs circle the former pick seven, reportedly telling Richmond they will need to cough up two first-round picks.

Hopper has nominated the Tigers as his club of choice, despite strong interest also coming from Geelong.

Richmond are also in the hunt for fellow want-away Giant Tim Taranto, but will need to do some other dealing to be able to satisfy GWS on both trades.

The Tigers only have one first-round selection at this stage and another future first.

New coach and former Richmond assistant Adam Kingsley is set to inherit a healthy salary cap, with Hopper, Taranto, West Australian forward Bobby Hill and defender Tanner Bruhn all eyeing the exit door.

The Giants have a history of procuring big hauls from high-profile trades, with three first-rounders heading north as part of Jeremy Cameron’s move to Geelong.

Adam Treloar’s move to Collingwood and Dylan Shiel’s shift to Essendon both yielded a pair of first-round selections.

Hopper and Taranto were both a part of the Giants side belted by the Tigers on grand final day in 2019.

Richmond are in the market for proven performers to boost their on-ball stocks after bombing out of finals in the first week and are clinging on to their era of success.

Veterans and three-time premiership duo Trent Cotchin and Jack Riewoldt have both been given one-year deals to keep their careers alive, while Dustin Martin has reportedly indicated to the club he is feeling more settled in Melbourne and is less likely to force a move away from the club.

@sam_mcclure back in July you suggested the Pies should try and package up pick 14 for Taranto and Bobby Hill on that basis pick 12 from the Tigers should be more than enough to Taranto alone.

Asking price for Giant Jacob Hopper revealed, Richmond set to get creative

Richmond have been tasked with handing over four first-round draft picks in order to attain GWS duo Tim Taranto and Jacob Hopper, with the New South Wales side's demands for the latter revealed.

The Tigers are poised to land the duo on seven-year deals following their preference to head to Punt Road in what is seen to be an imminent double coup for the Tigers.

GWS are understood to be demanding a pair of first-round picks for Taranto's services as his contract comes to an end, while Hopper, who is contracted, is reported to require a similar asking price from the Giants, according to The Herald Sun.

The Tigers are equipped with Picks 12, 19 and 30 at this year's draft, while holding their own future first-round selection for the 2023 National Draft.

Should the Giants see Pick 19 - the first selection of the second round - to hold enough value to be included as a first-round pick, the Tigers will still need to acquire another top selection to meet the Giants' demands.

Fringe players Ivan Soldo and Riley Collier-Dawkins have been flagged as potential 'sweeteners' for a trade deal between the Tigers and Giants, but more draft assets may be required to get a deal over the line.

The Giants have managed to gain similar trade packages for past departing stars, like Dylan Shiel and Adam Treloar, who joined Essendon and Collingwood respectively on deals that saw a pair of first-round picks head to GWS.

Key forward Jeremy Cameron landed at Geelong with a pair of future second-round selections in 2020, with three first-round picks landing in the Giants' lap.

The Giants' stance will mean the Tigers need to get creative this off-season, potentially parting with key personnel or multiple draft selections to land another first-round pick.

Riley Beveridge on the AFL website said Soldo is attracting interest from a few clubs. He seemed to be alluding to Soldo being traded to a third party and then what we get back from that (pick?) being used as part of the Taranto & Hopper trades.

Would say that this implies Geelong have given up on Hopper.

Its a salary cap dump.  As if we are going to hand over 4 1st round picks GWS.  Pee off you campaigners

Reports emerged that the Giants were set to command two first-round picks for Taranto alone, and a top-10 pick minimum for Hopper, while Richmond currently hold selections 12, 19, 30 and 84.

However Loen Cameron predicted the Tigers would need to include players in the deal too.

“No doubt there’s going to be picks … I wouldn’t be surprised if there’s some players in play there, that’s up to the Giants and the Tigers to work out,” he said.

“There’s no precedent, you can’t look back and say, ‘well two players going to one club at that high level, where do you go.’

“To try and bundle up a package to make sure that works for both clubs, clearly it’s going to have to be a combination of picks and a player or two”

If a first round pick wants to be traded within the first 3 years, the price should automatically a first round draft pick.

Can't have teams investing in a kid, then getting a second rounder or worse back.

These 2 players should have been cream on top after getting stuck into FA last year. Instead we watched paint dry and did sfa.

How we just ignored our list issues last year was a massive error of judgement. Watching players like Brodie Hewitt and lipininski go to the pies for a third of what hopper is costing.

Just on the stats of the 2 players.

Hopper 2021 vrs Lipinski 2022.

I can't find the vision but Matthew Lloyd on Footy Classified last night said he disagreed with Richmond going after both Taranto and Hopper because they are same type of player. Both inside mids & both ordinary kicks. He added that Richmond should only be going after one of them and then going for different type of player.

You may be right but in 2021, we were coming off back to back flags and Pies were coming off 17th. Ladder position has to be a consideration.
My analogy would be an auction where 2 guys are bidding - one has just sold his house with a 30 day settlement and the other guys is not yet on the market.
The urgency is different.
“I find it nearly impossible to make those judgments, but he is certainly up there with the really important ones, he is certainly up there with the Francis Bourkes and the Royce Harts and the Kevin Bartlett and the Kevin Sheedys, there is no doubt about that,” Balme said.
