Georgiades and Riccardi uncontracted beyond this season? Surely we can pry one of them over to punt road.

LMAO@ that Cumberland trade scenario - though Machine & Tigeritis probably think it's overs. :shh

Harry Himmelberg
Contract expires 2023
Clubs are becoming a little frustrated that Himmelberg has left everyone so in the dark about his contract plans. The Giants are already paying him good money and have offered a deal worth at least five seasons. But Richmond, Collingwood, Sydney Swans and Essendon are all queuing up to land the versatile aerialist. Would hurt the Giants if another one walked.

Jake Riccardi
Contract expires 2023
Hawthorn has had a look at the roaming forward whose job security could be threatened by top draft pick Aaron Cadman. Looks a great pick at selection 51 in the 2018 draft from St Bernard’s and Werribee.

Mitch Georgiades
Contract expires 2023
All the talk has been about the West Australian clubs coming hard for the injured goalkicker, but don’t rule Victorian clubs making a late play. The pull home has been overstated a touch and if Georgiades does request a fresh start – he wasn’t in Ken Hinkley’s before that ACL injury – a Melbourne or Collingwood would make sense. If Port could turn Georgiades into Esava Ratugolea it would be a win.

SUNS ROOKIE ATTRACTS RIVAL INTEREST

Gold Coast forward Brodie McLaughlin only landed a shot on a list in February, but now more AFL clubs are keeping a close eye on his contract status beyond 2023.

The 25-year-old earned a deal for this season after being signed by Gold Coast during the pre-season supplemental selection period, following a meteoric rise from the fifth tier of the Ammos to the VFL and then to the AFL.

Since then, McLaughlin has emerged as one of the best mobile key forwards not getting a game in the AFL this year.

With Levi Casboult commanding the third spot alongside Ben King and Jack Lukosius in Stuart Dew’s forward line, McLaughlin has booted 34 goals from 12 games to lead the Jim 'Frosty' Miller Medal by three goals after 14 rounds.

McLaughlin kicked 5.1 against Box Hill at Heritage Bank Stadium on Sunday, following 6.3 against Geelong in round two, 4.1 against North Melbourne in round five and four other sets of three in his first season at the Suns.

Fremantle and St Kilda were understood to be two clubs that monitored him during the pre-season before he was offered a spot at the Suns, while Hawthorn, Richmond and West Coast could be in the market for a mobile forward in October.

McLaughlin is settled in Queensland and believed to be keen to remain at the Suns, but it yet to secure a deal for 2024.

Mick McGuane: The left-field out-of-contract names your club should target this off-season

Mick McGuane
HeraldSun
June 29, 2023

Liam Henry (Fremantle), 21, 34 AFL games

Who could do with him: St Kilda, Richmond

He had a career-best game last week with 32 possessions against Essendon. But with an eye to the future, St Kilda need to start thinking who is going to replace Bradley Hill. Who is going to play that high half-forward/wing role and cover the ground and use the ball well to do some damage when attacking the game. With the uncertainty hovering over the Marlon Pickett situation, Richmond should get in the conversation.

TALL TIGER
Ivan Soldo (Richmond), 27, 50 games

Who could benefit: GWS Giants, Port Adelaide, West Coast

Soldo is contracted but has only played one game so far this year. Toby Nankervis is clearly their number one ruck choice and the growth in Samson Ryan’s game has been rapid and there for all to see. If the Giants lose the uncontracted Matthew Flynn to another club, Soldo becomes a back up option for them but I wouldn’t be surprised if other clubs, who are short of ruck stocks might try to entice him out of Tigerland. Interesting times ahead.

Tigers keen on early pick

Jon Ralph, Glenn McFarlane and Jay Clark
HeraldSun
5 July 2023

Richmond is keen to get back into the first round of the 2023 draft and has its eyes set on Gold Coast’s pick, which is currently at pick 7.

The Suns are hopeful of securing all three of their academy kids who could fall in the top 10 in the draft order - potential top 5 key talls Jed Walter and Ethan Read and midfielder Jake Rogers.

The Suns have already stockpiled plenty of extra selections to use as points, having secured the Giants’ and Adelaide’s second-round picks and Collingwood and Adelaide’s third-round picks.

But Richmond has aspirations to secure a first-round selection after trading their 2023 first-rounder in the Jacob Hopper deal and could give up a package that provides more draft points than the No. 7 pick for the Suns’ selection.

The Tigers have been vindicated on trading picks 12 and 19 to the Giants for Tim Taranto.

But their current first round pick which is in GWS’ keeping is at No. 4 so they will want to make a finals surge so they don’t hand over such a cherished pick.

It’s not even worthy of printing that dribble. Of course we want pick 7 - why wouldn’t we? But how are we going to achieve that, what the hell do we have in collateral to even get pick 30 let alone pick 7.
“I find it nearly impossible to make those judgments, but he is certainly up there with the really important ones, he is certainly up there with the Francis Bourkes and the Royce Harts and the Kevin Bartlett and the Kevin Sheedys, there is no doubt about that,” Balme said.

Given the Suns have academy kids to pick up, collecting more draft points is worth more to them than a single late top 10 pick. So, the Suns will be looking to turn their first round pick into more draft points than what their first pick is worth.

For example:

Gold Coast's current Pick 7 is worth 1644 points.

We're currently 15th. So, our 2nd rounder (#22) is worth 845 points.

We could swap our future 2nd for an early-mid 2nd rounder in this year's draft as well as trade someone out for another 3rd rounder.

Our current 2nd:              845 (pick 22)
Swapped 2nd:                  703 (pick 27)
Our current 3rd:              412 (pick 41)
Our current 4th:              158 (pick 59)
--------------------------------------
Total                              2118 points.

Suns gain an extra 474 draft points from the deal in picks 22, 27, 41, 59 to use to pick up their academy kids.

We might ask for the Suns' future 3rd in return to roughly even up the deal (in terms of points) across two drafts.

We end up with pick 7 and the traded 3rd round pick this year and will have our 1st, two 3rds, 4th rounders for the 2024 draft.
