No coach but the Socceroos beat Nigeria 1 - 0 overnight in London. David Carney scored the goal.

81 days till we begin our 2010 World Cup campaign and we are still coachless. New names that have now been bandied around are Jurgen Klinsmann and Gerard Houllier again.

I wonder if Russia fails to qualify whether Guus might change his mind and look again at the free Socceroos job.

LOL at the twit compere on SEN tonight saying Sheedy could do it (and he was serious) :rollin.

I think Guus contract is up at 2010 or when Russia's qualification process for 2010 world cup ends. I believe he got a contract extension at some point in time early on in his tenure when Soccer Australia were looking for a coach to take us to the Asian Cup.

The Socceroos will face Asian champions Iraq, China and Qatar in their initial World Cup qualifiers.

Socceroos dealt tough World Cup draw
Monday, 26 November 2007

The Qantas Socceroos opponents for the third round of qualifying for the 2010 FIFA World Cup were revealed today at the draw of the preliminary qualifying stage in Durban, South Africa.

China, Iraq and Qatar will be Australia's opponents in the third round of Asian Football Confederation qualifying after the Qantas Socceroos were seeded directly into this stage of the qualifying process.

Also seeded alongside Australia were South Korea, Iran, Saudi Arabia and Japan.

This phase of qualifying will see the Qantas Socceroos play their opponents home and away with the top-two placed teams progressing to the fourth and final round where four teams will gain direct entry to the 2010 FIFA World Cup while a fifth team will play off against the top Oceania team for the final place in South Africa.

The fixture will be distributed once confirmed by the Asian Football Confederation.

Dutchman Pim Verbeek is the new Socceroos coach through to the end of the 2010 World Cup campaign.

The 51-year-old's most noteworthy achievement in 25 years of coaching was guiding South Korea to the Asian Cup semi-finals this year.

He has also coached Sparta Rotterdam, Feyenoord Rotterdam and Fortuna Sittard in the Dutch league.
