I'm surprised at the reaction to Pres speech. I think if it was not passively aggressively touched on there would be comments of it being a weak address. It's not his strong suit JOR, but had no issue.

Had no issue with the speeches from players, they are still contracted so obliged to say thank you. How they speak is a representation of themselves, good, bad, shy, short, long. Personally only really interested in coaches speech as that is an indication of our playing groups direction and focus for next year.

I didn’t mind it , awkward for sure, but for the club to say nothing might be interpreted as we don’t have a problem with players breaking their contracts and it would be setting a precedent ,and  that is why we need overs for the contracted players  otherwise we will be the new raiding ground.

Except we basically encouraged them to leave....and I highly doubt other clubs will interpret us an easy mark because we were too nice to departing players at our B&F.....but I can tell you any oppo. players we might want to entice to the club in the future will take note if we act like petulant aerseholes to our own let alone premiership stars....

Rioli & Bolton are two of our best players and contracted for 3 &4 more years respectively yet are going with our blessing - the club has publicly signaled that they were going to hit the upcoming drafts hard - how else do you think they were planning on being able to do that? By trading the likes of Dow & Sonsie?

Agree with Dio and might add that a senior figure at the club mentioned to me “hit the draft hard” so I think we can all read between the lines can’t we?

And, it’s the right thing to do so why are we even discussing it?

People who whinged about Taranto & Hopper and quick fixes and would be whinging if we were doing what Geelong are doing trading picks for Smith & Oliver & bringing in Jack Martin or going for Stringer and accusing us of overrating the list (and they'd be right) are whinging about this...

Setting a precedent would be for the club to say we're not trading you. You have a contract and we're holding you to it.

It will be interesting one if a club, any club does it. Last one I remember doing it was the Swans with Papley

But agree with others the players speeches were poor, especially Baker. Really disappointed in his. He was one of the VC this season he could have, should have thanked the Club and the supporters for supporting him. Not a few mumbled words about supporting from afar. He had plenty of time to prepare for it

As for Shai, he's hopeless at public speaking at the best of times, so his was no surprise but gee his manager should have prepared him for the need to show some gratitude

I would hope the club tells the contracted players that we will hold you to your contract unless we get the asking price , a bit like what we paid for Taranto and Hopper , I thought we paid the full price.  The club was shocked and disappointed from  what I hear and wanted to keep them all ,

On the other thing , going hard at the draft doesn’t mean you want  half your best players to dishonour their contracts , we already had  a lot of picks through last years trading  and were going hard at the draft regardless.

I thought their speeches were a reflection of their guilt, as you said the club did a lot for them and too run away when it got harder is a disappointment to most including themselves

With regards to the speeches as a generalisation footballers do not have a great reputation for being good public speakers. Making public speeches are not part of their duties and nor should they be. In circumstances where Baker, Bolton and Rioli have stated a clear desire to leave the club it was problematic to expect them to make speeches in the first place.  What good was going to come out of it. Bar them renouncing their desire to leave the club their speeches were not going to win over clearly disappointed fans and a disappointed club.

With regards to the President's speech it is extraordinary to single out a player in a speech. The speech has been interpreted by the media as a thinly disguised attack on the disloyalty of some players. This undermines the credit Broad deserves. In my opinion the club in recent times has been extraordinarily good to its players and the speech is a public manifestation of the internal anger the club holds in relation to certain players' actions.

Disagree with speeches not to be expected. They are current players and contracted. What if we don't get a fair trade and we refuse to trade them? What if Baker goes PSD and we pick em up. I think the players need to represent themselves professionally and doing an acceptance speech is part of that, it's not difficult to get your management to give you advice, wrote a speech and practice it. They aren't teenagers and have received media training. I'm also not someone who holds them to judgement for not being an Alex Rance on the mic. Second paragraph agree, need to do far better at giving ammunition to media, we will be firing line for a while. Easy pickings, click bait frustrated fan base down bottom of ladder, no media teachers pets like Danger, Dusty history we won't be anyone's best friends. Need to be careful and protect the players. Particularly the draftees of this year.

Richmond coach Adem Yze has revealed a number of his players spent time in hospital after getting sick during their footy trip to Thailand.

A group of Tigers players went to Thailand for their end-of-season celebrations in recent weeks, but an illness that spread appears to have soured them somewhat.

Yze himself wasn’t feeling 100 per cent at the club’s best and fairest presentation on Tuesday night, but said he wasn’t as bad as some of the players who went overseas.

“Before I get started, I just wanted to highlight the fact that I’m not trying to put on a sexy voice — I’m a little bit crook at the moment,” Yze said as he opened his speech.

“But not as crook as I hear a few of our players got in Thailand — I’m looking at you, Ben Miller.

“A few of the boys have been in hospital and things like that.

“So, it’s been not only a tough season, but a tough off-season so far.

“But to their credit, they came back a little bit lighter. Nick Vlastuin was adamant he came back four or five kilos lighter, which is unusual when you come back from a footy trip, so well done.”
