Geelong has not fielded any interest yet from other clubs regarding full-forward Kent Kingsley, who last month walked before being pushed.

My memories of Thornton are always of him being beaten by taller, stronger forwards like Richo and Hall. Pass for me. I don't rate him at all.
Kingsley would be okay if he comes cheap. I think he has more footy left in him than Mark Graham did. He just needs to consistently kick straight. We already have Richo. We have more forward options than Geelong so maybe this may free him up a bit. He does lead well. Not sure about his contesting ability though.

Blues want first pick for Thorton if traded

Thornton wants to stay, say Blues
Jake Niall
The Age

CARLTON says uncontracted key defender Bret Thornton, the subject of Hawthorn's attentions, has indicated he wants to remain a Blue.

Carlton chief executive Michael Malouf met Thornton and his management yesterday, with the Blues trying to come to terms with the 22-year-old defender, who has been offered a hefty three year by the Hawks.

Malouf confirmed yesterday's meeting, the first since Thornton began seriously entertaining Hawthorn's offer.

"We met with him," Malouf said. "He's back from his holiday, he had a good holiday. And it was a positive meeting, you know, we're hopeful that he will stay the club. He's a required player at the club and we know he wants to be at the club."

If Thornton is to remain with Carlton, his contract will have to be approved by the club's board, which as a matter of policy must approve of any contract longer than two years.

Carlton's initial offer, as of last week, involved a base of $150,000, with the capacity to earn up to $240,000 in 2007 and $260,000 in the next year.

But Hawthorn has offered a guaranteed $300,000 annually for three years. Richmond also has expressed some interest in Thornton, a young defender, having discarded Andrew Kellaway and with Darren Gaspar nearing the end of his career.

Thornton has played 91 games in five years and finished seventh in the best and fairest this year.

Carlton would want Hawthorn's No. 7 draft pick in the event that the player requested a trade.

In the event that Thornton chose to walk, Carlton could theoretically re-draft with its first choice in the pre-season draft. Thornton, alternatively, could place a high price on his head and nominate for the pre-season draft.

Carlton feels its firm line on contracts has paid off over the past 18 months, given that it managed to keep Lance Whitnall and Matthew Lappin — the latter having sought unsuccessfully a three-year deal last year.

Another young Blue, Jordan Russell, also remains out of contract.

Thornton says he wants to be a Hawk
Stephen Rielly
The Age

THE substance to Carlton's claim of an imminent youth-led recovery was seriously eroded yesterday when 22-year-old full-back Bret Thornton told the club he wanted to take his career to Hawthorn.

They [Hawthorn] have won Thornton's approval with a concerted chase but a trade still has to be negotiated during next week's exchange period. The Blues, who say they want a first-round pick to consider a deal, will be happy to know that Essendon and Richmond are also circling.

According to McConville [Thorton's manager], though, Thornton wants to play for Hawthorn only and is prepared to go into the pre-season draft if necessary. So certain is he of his decision to leave the Blues that he declined an invitation to meet Pagan, who called his defender yesterday in an attempt to persuade him to reconsider.

"At the moment, they (Carlton) are saying he is still a required player but they are also saying they want a first-round draft selection for him," McConville said. "All I can say is that Bret is steadfast in his decision. He has thought long and hard about this and is certain that he needs to leave."

Hawthorn's player manager, Chris Pelchen, said he was confident of doing a deal with the Blues but not one involving the club's first selection in the national draft, pick six.

Not happy that he wants Hawthorn only! I do rate Thornton, he would solve a lot of problems for us. As for the taller, stronger opponents, he is 192cm and 95kg - no lightweight. Richmond should match the Hawks offer! Carlton are dreaming with a first rounder though. I would offer pick 26!

Welcome aboard OER LC  :)

Knobel + pick 26 for Thorton is one I've heard mentioned. The Blues need a ruckman.

We cant continue to make the mistakes of paying players too much money.

Thornton is proven at AFL level and can hold down a key position. He is worth every penny!

You can't claim that about either Perry or Polak.

However if he wishes to go to the Hawks, ain't much we can do!

BTW nice to be here MT. Great site you guys have here!

It doesn't appear money is the issue any longer as Blues have apparently matched the Hawks offer yet he still wants to leave. Remembering that 92.5% of the salary cap must be paid by every AFL club, it seems Thorton was peeed off with the initial offer compared to what some of his Carlton teammates are getting.

Looks like Sheeds is being a cunny so and so as usual. Going after Thorton to force Hawthorn to pay the maximum of giving up their pick 6 which they don't want to. If the Hawks don't then the bombers get Thorton in the PSD without giving up anything for him.

Keeping Hawthorn in check during trade time is in our interests as well, I would have thought. Lets hope we can screw some decent picks out of clubs tomorrow and the next few days.

Carlton says they won't trade with the Hawks
« Reply #43 on: October 09, 2006, 03:05:04 PM »
According to SEN, Carlton have told Hawthorn they won't be trading with them in regards to Thorton. SEN reckon that message is for all clubs but if Thorton wants to leave then the Blues won't have a choice otherwise he Thorton can walk ???.

Thorton's manager just said Thorton still wants to be traded to Hawthorn (only) or he will go into the PSD if no deal is done. Thorton chose the Hawks because they put up an offer to him first.
