As mentioned in the practice match thread, Jade Rawlings said Chris Stewart (#24 in the yellow for those who went today) has joined Coburg from North Heidelberg. Solid lad who kicked a couple of nice goals towards the end of the game including a Daicos one along the ground. Jade said he's a good player but just needs to get his fitness up.

Joe Gazzo was the easily recognisable Burger out there (#29 yellow).

There was probably 8 Burgers all up but I didn't have a clue who was who. One may have been Josh Jones.

Seems VFL clubs are slowly becoming the poorer cousins to clubs west of the Victorian border

SANFL CLUBS NEED SALARY-CAP BOOST
Sportsbeat (SA)

With the advent of a national competition, sanfl clubs have long enjoyed enough financial muscle to ensure they can outbid vfl & wafl teams and attract the vast majority of quality recruits outside of the afl.

The sanfl's salary cap is far in excess of those of the vfl & wafl- a centrpiece in the sanfl's desire to be regarded as the best state-league competition in the country & much to the frustration of both the wafl & the vfl.

Quickly the landscape is changing. while the salary cap in sa remains virtually double that of the state-league clubs in vic & wa, the mining based economic boom in wa has made the nine wafl clubs able to package very lucrative work offers to complement an inferior football contract.

Several midfielders & ruckmen have found their way into the wafl in 2008 after local clubs (sa) believed they had offered them very attractive contracts to play in the sanfl.

The economic boom in wa is certain to see sanfl clubs beating down the door at west lakes demanding a further lift in our salary cap. such a move would be vigorously opposed by the vfl, which is the big loser in the recruiting race, and quite likely the afl, which has always cast a suspicious eye on the size of the sanfl salary cap.

Coburg Tigers to stay - we hope (Moreland Leader)

Tigers to stay - we hope
Moreland Leader
Simon Craig
04Feb08

MORELAND'S councillor responsible for recreation admits the council and local footy fans will be ``very disappointed'' if the Coburg Tigers move to Craigieburn.

But Cr John Kavanagh remains confident Coburg, Richmond's VFL feeder team, will stay in the municipality, saying he would be ``surprised'' if the move eventuated.

Cr Kavanagh was speaking in the wake of a report in last week's Leader that Coburg could leave City Oval (recently rebranded as ABD Group Stadium) for the proposed $10 million football centre in the booming outer suburb.

A confidential agreement struck between the Richmond Tigers, Hume Council, Stockland and the AFL includes reference to a VFL team playing at the ground.

The Calder Cannons, Coburg's TAC Cup under-18s feeder team, would likely follow suit.

AFL Victoria chief executive Peter Schwab said there was a ``fair chance'' the teams would move to Craigieburn if the consortium can secure about $4.6 million in government funding.

Cr Kavanagh described the Coburg Tigers as ``an important part of our community.''

``They have big local support and it would be very disappointing to see them leave,'' he said.

``We have a lot of young local footballers involved in the club.''

Hume Mayor Mohamad Abbouche said having a VFL team based at Craigieburn would be ``great for the community''.

Coburg general manager Ryan O'Conner again declined to comment.

Good to see the big Skipper, Trav Ronaldson back at training tonight for the Burgers!!

His leadership and encouragement on the track was a very welcome sight.

First practise game this week for the Burgers on Saturday at Skilled Stadium.

Just to let everyone know the VFL have decided that there will be NO VFL curtain raisers at the MCG in season 2008.. No reason why just that they wont be played

Coburg were due to play Geelong in a curtain raiser to the Richmond -v- Geelong on May 17th. this is not going ahead and the VFL game has been moved to Skilled Stadium.

Pathetic decision IMHO

Rumour has it that the VFL thinks playing curtainraisers to AFL games cheapens the VFL.

Well good on them - NOT  :banghead

I would have thought it was great way of selling the VFL brand and getting more people to see VFL footy

Oops sorry too logical perhaps ::)

Yep too sensible WP but tell that to those ex-VFAers in the modern VFL who see it a bowing down to the AFL (old VFL).

The Tasmania Football Club have purchased the Coburg Tigers Round 10 Senior home game.  The match will remain on Saturday 14th June.  It will now be played at West Park Oval in Burnie, commencing at 1.00pm.
