Richardson in blockbuster
Daily Advertiser
26 February 2008 - 10:32AM

In a massive boost to the profile of the game, Richardson, one of the most respected and admired players in the AFL, will be one of the leaders for the near full strength Richmond line-up against Sydney.

“We are certainly taking this game very seriously,” Richmond media officer Judith Donnelly said.

“We are going to bring our strongest team available.

“Richardson missed last weekend because of a prior commitment but he will be in.”

In a major coup for the Riverina, fans will have the chance to see a legend of the modern era play for possibly the last time as Richardson nears the end of his career.

In a stellar career for the Tigers, Richardson has played 256 games amassing an incredible 742 goals.

The game at Narrandera is expected to draw a crowd of about 10,000 people, with Richmond fielding a strong squad.

Sydney has always been well-supported in the Riverina and last year more than 10,000 people converged on Narrandera Sportsground to watch the Swans tackle Collingwood in a trial game.

Richmond and Sydney both enjoyed resounding wins at the weekend with the Swans thrashing Port Adelaide while the Tigers easily accounted for Melbourne.

Matthew Richardson’s glittering career

- DOB: 19/3/1975

- Height: 195cm

- Weight: 104kg

- Position: Forward

- Clubs: Richmond Tigers

- AFL Debut: Richmond Tigers v St Kilda May 5,1993

- Career games: 256 games

- Career goals: 742

- All Australian representative: 1996, 1999

10,000 expected for AFL trial clash
Daily Advertiser
26 February 2008

The Riverina will hold its second major sporting event in as many weeks on Friday night when Sydney and Richmond do battle in an AFL trial blockbuster at Narrandera Sportsground.

Following on from last week’s NRL trial in Lavington, Riverina fans will have the opportunity to watch some of the best AFL players in action.

Habel yesterday reported tickets sales were increasing and believes the target of 10,000 people will be attainable.

“We have sold over 3000 already,” Habel said.

“All the outlets have been really busy today (yesterday) as well and we will get another update tomorrow (today).

“We expect there will be another big increase tomorrow (today) and in the days leading up to the game.

“It (10,000) would be great and we will go close.”

Last year more than 10,000 fans flocked to Narrandera Sportsground to watch Sydney and Collingwood in action.

Habel yesterday said Richmond would have just as much appeal as Collingwood – especially after the Tigers announced they would be bringing close to a full-strength team for the duel.

“We haven’t heard anything about what team the Swans will have but Richmond are going have a good team in,” Habel said.

“We are really happy with the two sides and we think both of them will bring some of their bigger names.

“The season starts pretty soon so most clubs would be looking to give their players some match practice and get some miles in the legs.”

Richmond yesterday revealed it would be playing superstar forward Matthew Richardson while Sydney are expected to name star defender Leo Barry, who is from Deniliquin.

Former AFL champion Robert ‘Dipper” DiPierdomenico will make the journey to Narrandera as part of the 150 years celebrations.

Habel also suggested people purchase their tickets before the game to avoid waiting and queuing on Friday night.

The Daily Telegraph says the Swans will be near full strength this week in bringing back Leo Barry and Kennelly. Only Ted Richards is missing.

Don't forget Malceski who's probably out for the season. A very damaging player who the Swans will really miss this season.

Narrandera ticket sales hint at record crowd (Daily Advertiser)

Ticket sales hint at record crowd
Daily Advertiser
Charlie Whiteley
28 February 2008

This number of pre-purchased tickets is likely to see a record amount of fans at the ground, beating last year’s attendance for the Swans v Collingwood game.

With both teams selecting near full strength sides it will be great for fans in the Riverina to see superstars such as Matthew Richardson and Barry Hall in action.

“It’s a good opportunity for fans to take advantage of seeing some of the greats of the game play,” Southern NSW AFL Regional Manager Paul Habel said.

“Both clubs have been open in picking strong teams so it is a good opportunity for players to see the Richardson’s, Foley’s, Hall’s and Goodes’ play,” he said.

There has been a constant flow of tickets throughout the week, with fans from outside the Riverina looking at travelling down for the clash.

“People are travelling to the game from Sydney and Melbourne so I’m sure there will be a good atmosphere,” Narrandera ex-services club assistant manager Bev Ashcroft said.

“Last year was packed and the way tickets have been sold I’m sure it will be this year, tickets are running out fast,” she said.

Ashcroft said the Narrandera Sportsground was in pristine condition with the facilities as good as anywhere outside of Sydney and Melbourne.

“It should be a great night of AFL with some great football and entertainment on show,” she said.

Habel is advising people to get to Narrandera Sportsground nice and early so they can take advantage of the pre-game entertainment on offer.

“The NAB tour will be at the ground which will be fantastic, especially for kids,” he said.

“I urge families to come along and take advantage of a great promotion. There will be several competitions available, past players will be there, there will be music, it should be a great night,” he said.

Swans declare 'game-on' (Daily Advertiser)

SWANS ON ATTACK
Daily Advertiser
Matt Malone
28 February 2008

Swans assistant coach Mark Stone yesterday confirmed Sydney would field its biggest names in the all-important NAB Challenge game at Narrandera.

Goodes and Hall, along with Riverina-bred Swans stars Brett Kirk, Leo Barry and Ben Mathews, will all line up for Sydney.

In a big boost to the pre-season fixture, Richmond followed suit yesterday by naming a full-strength squad, including the likes of Matthew Richardson, Brett Deledio, Troy Simmonds and Nathan Brown.

Stone yesterday declared game-on to Richmond, revealing the stakes were high in the crucial lead-up game to the AFL season.

“Richmond is a pretty competitive team, and by the looks of it, they’ll be bringing a fairly strong side,” Stone said yesterday.

“They haven’t had a great pre-season so far so they’ll be looking at building up some confidence heading into round one and there’s no doubt we’ll be trying to do the same.

“They’d want to put a win on the board, I’d say, to try and give themselves a boost before the start of the season.”

Stone said the Swans were looking forward to giving more game time to Hall and fellow senior players as they look to fine-tune their game for round one.

“It’s going to be a pretty strong side. It won’t be full strength but it’ll be at least at 75 per cent,” Stone said.

“There’ll be a couple of guys coming out of last week’s side but the majority will play again – Hall, Goodes, Kirk and Barry will all be there.

True tiga. Roos said after last season the Swans needed to add more pace and help out the likes of Malceski and Kennelly (why they traded for Mattner). Losing him is a big blow.

whats the go with edwards, once again not named
Shane's getting over a slight quad. He trained fully on Tuesday but obviously they aren't taking any risks.

Petts looked like he copped a niggle at training on Tuesday so if he doesn't play then we'll know why.
