Mark Coughlan Injury Update

Mark Coughlan has been experiencing ongoing issues with his hamstring over the past three weeks.

It was hopeful that he would be available to play this weekend, however he is yet to meet all of the criteria we expect for a return to play.

Given the vulnerability to hamstring injuries following ACL reconstructions, and ongoing soreness in his hamstring, we will be taking a conservative approach until we are satisfied Mark will cope with the demands of game day.

Further tests are being performed before a return to play date is set.

Yep Miller said to us today that Cogs is 2-3 weeks away. Going by the RFC site it sounds it could be longer than that  :-\.

Away from playing for Richmond or returning for Coburg because returning for Coburg seems plausible for 3 weeks, Richmond definitely not.

Nah definitely Coburg. More likely Coburg ressies.

Miller told SEN Cogs has been sore the past 4-5 weeks  :-\ and it's common for players coming back from knees to have hammy issues on the way back.

Still only 25.

If Cogs can get back to anywhere near our best he will walk into our side, and be one of the better players.

"He just pulled up sore in his hamstring and given he has had such a lengthy absence we didn't want to take any risks with him," Richmond football manager Paul Armstrong told Sportal.

"He is doing everything he can to get right and hopefully it won't be too long," said Armstrong.

It isnt looking good for him, he has been out of the game for a while and you couldnt see him being able to do much this season.

Shame, hopefully he can make it back into the senior team but the signs arent good.

Still only round 4 thou.

I would hope by the 2nd half of year he can break into side, and by end of season give us hope for Cogs/RFC - 09/future.

Cotchin - Cogs - Deledio

Would be a sweet center line.

Unlucky Tiger injured again

http://www.foxsports.com.au/story/0,8659,23554065-23211,00.html

    April 17, 2008

THE troublesome hamstrings of Richmond midfielder Mark Coughlan have meant another delay to his long-awaited AFL return.

Coughlan is trying to return from two knee reconstructions, but hamstring tightness has ruled him out of a return through VFL affiliates Coburg.

The midfielder's ongoing hamstring problem flared again at training and the Tigers will put him through more tests before they set a return date.

"He was hoping himself he'd be right to go this week, he was really close last week," said Tigers football manager Paul Armstrong.

"He trained last night with Coburg and just felt tightness again, so he's not quite right - that's why we haven't put a timeframe on it as to when he might come back.

"Obviously he wants that to be sooner, (rather) than later, but because he's missed so much football, we want to make sure he's absolutely right."

Coughlan suffered his first knee injury in round 12, 2006 and needed a second reconstruction during the 2007 pre-season.

He played in Richmond's final pre-season trial game against Geelong last month, but hamstring tightness then stalled his comeback.

The club said that Coughlan was having "ongoing issues" with his hamstrings.

"Given the vulnerability to hamstring injuries following ACL reconstructions, and ongoing soreness in his hamstring, we will be taking a conservative approach until we are satisfied Mark will cope with the demands of game day," the club said.

"Further tests are being performed before a return to play date is set."

Coughlan has played 83 games for Richmond since his 2001 AFL debut.

Armstrong stressed that the hamstring problem was the only barrier to Coughlan's return.

"It's very frustrating for Mark ... he was eager to get back as soon as possible, but as we've said to him, there's no point coming back too soon and risk breaking down," he said.

"He's always been a super-fit player and he looks after himself really well, the rest of his body is fine.”

This is why I don't yet agree with the 'Cogs is finshed' line.

If you see pictures of the man his body looks like a machine. He is in top nick.

If we can fix the bottom 1/2 of him he'd be a massive 'in' for the side.

At his best he was very, very good. I miss him.  :-[

2009 midfeild (hopfully):
 - Cogs, Foley, Tambling
 - Deledio, Cotchin, Edwards, Connors, Morton, King (?)

Tuck, Newman, Johnson add hard bodies.

Polo, Jackson, Raines, White should remain on the list also.

Poor Coggers.

From a club planning point of view, you would have to regard him coming back in the side as a bonus, not a given.

yeah true but draga was a useless footballer even when he was playing whereas cogs when fit is a gem. our best 5.

that said i think his best is behind him.

can someone tell me any players who have come back to their brilliant best after 2 knee reco's

2 Knee reco's are structural issues which are now compounded by soft tissue soreness, does not look good for Cogs to get back to the level he was 2 years ago, let alone to make the incremental improvement to catch up to today's current batch of pacy midfielders.

The game at elite AFL level may have just moved too quickly for Cogs to gain traction in any meaningful manner in an AFL midfield.

I respect Cogs' contribution and feel that he would make an excellent assistant coach at RFC if not captain/coach of Coburg (or be very welcome at the Perth Demons).
