Also it'll be 15 degrees, showers with possible local hail and storms on Saturday.

Oh god, they're conditions that Jimmy Bartel was born to play in.

Wallace promises better showing

IT'S NOT something Richmond supporters would be dwelling on, last year's result against Geelong in round six.

The Cats did as they wanted, racking up any number of records, including the ninth-highest all-time final score, resulting in a record losing margin for the yellow-and-blacks.

But Tigers coach Terry Wallace is promising a vastly better performance on Saturday afternoon at the MCG, as the Tigers take on the unbeaten Cats.

"It's a big challenge for us, but we've played against the better sides in the competition so far, and we think that we've handled ourselves pretty well," he said.

"We think that we've been competitive against the best sides in the competition. I mean, how much time you spend going back through history – I reckon we'll go better than this time last year, I don't think there'll be much doubt about that. I think it was 157 points or something.

"I reckon we'll vastly improve on that performance. We're in pretty good form, and in good nick as a side."

The Cats had half their team involved in the Hall of Fame Tribute Match last weekend, and the Tigers just two, something Wallace said was a complete unknown as to how it would affect this week.

"How they come off 11 blokes playing – that continuity of playing footy versus us not playing for an extra week – are you fresher, are they better off because they've had a hitout, all those sort of things come into play, and you never know where that sort of sits.

"We respect the opposition … We believe that we're getting better and that we're improving, and that we're more competitive against the good sides."

Wallace dismissed the idea that Geelong was due for a loss.

"Not really. No, no – we've been on the backend of some pretty big losses to Geelong, so for us to be sitting back and underestimating anything the reigning premiers are doing --  when they haven't lost a game -- I think we'd be kidding ourselves."

Some background on the author:

Mic used to be a Richmond supporter while he was a learning/budding journo finding his way around the media scene in WA.  A few years ago he got a gig writing for the AFL in WA and to prevent any chance of a 'conflict of interest' he jumped ship and became a 'West Australian' supporter, rejecting and cutting all ties with Richmond.  Even left all his Tiger gear (scarves, hats etc) in a box in the driveway of my mate's house!  He has just returned to Melbourne to write for the AFL and it appears he's a bit rusty on his knowledge/research of what's actually happening in Vic.

Steve Johnson in doubt?

Gary Ablett strong, Steve Johnson struggling
Bruce Matthews | May 16, 2008 01:15pm

GEELONG'S injury concerns have shifted to forward Steve Johnson after he struggled to get through training this morning.

Star onballer Gary Ablett had been the focus of the Cats' medical staff this week after he missed the Hall of Fame match with a sore calf.

He appears certain to play against Richmond tomorrow after getting through the Cats' light training session today. The club said he trained strongly on Wednesday during a closed session.

Although Johnson didn't appear to injure himself during today's session, the All-Australian small forward cut his training short and received treatment from medical staff on his left leg.

The club says it expects Johnson to line-up against the Tigers tomorrow.

Tigers set to play hard ball against Cats - Royal (RFC)

Tigers set to play hard ball against Cats

RICHMOND assistant coach Brian Royal says his team's hard-ball skills will help them on Saturday as they work to wash away the memories of the first time they met Geelong last year.

The Cats pounded the Tigers at Telstra Dome early last season, but Royal said Saturday at the MCG was a chance for his club to show how far it had come, despite the Cats having bigger, harder bodies to throw into a possibly wet fray.

"I guess you've just got to have a look at the statistics at the moment – we're the number one hard-ball team in the competition. I don't think it matters the body size, it's about how you go after it," he said after training on Friday morning.

"We're quite considerably number one in that area.

"I guess what we can measure is how much we've improved - no doubt that was a game we'd like to forget, but it keeps getting brought up, and we need to show our supporters we have improved."

Royal said the concept of the honourable loss was wearing thin at Punt Road.

"It is [important to win], and Geelong, over the last couple of times we've played them, have had a good record against us, so that gives them confidence, so it's a great opportunity for us to measure ourselves against the best in the competition."

Gary Ablett is coming off a calf injury that kept him out of last weekend's Hall of Fame Tribute match and there were reports that Steve Johnson was looking a little proppy at training on Friday morning, but Royal said it made no difference to the planning process, and suggested a couple of opponents for star Matthew Richardson.

"The work that we do on the opposition, we're always preparing for the best side to play, and Ablett and Johnson will be in all our work,” Royal said. “You always hope that they don't, but we'll be expecting them to play.

"I guess they've got a number of players who could play on him [Richardson] – probably [Darren] Milburn is one who could play on him, and they've been playing [Andrew] Mackie also out on the wing, so they're probably the size who could pick him up."
