Just to clear the air Darth Tiger are you referring to Moore as the 3rd defender?

Yep, not intended as a knock on Moore, more a definition of his role as he floats between the pacy small forwards to marking half forwards.

Doesn't play deep, and generally doesn't take the lead-up forward.

Agree that Simmo is crucial for the sides structure & performance, however can't see a 3rd defender as critical to results.

Its no coincidence that RFC performed better when there was a competitive inside midfielder (Tuck) getting first hands on the pill in the 2nd half of the season, so mine is;

1. Simmo
2. Lids
3. Tuck
4. Willy T

Can't have Thursfield as more important to our team structure than Moore DT.  Thursfield goes down, meh, we've got other options for the role he plays and the output he produces.  Moore goes down we are significantly compromised until/unless Rance comes on - I believe (hope) he will end up being a similar type.

You got me stuffed then Darth, I am fairly sure he played on Buddy and Fev both times in 2008.

In my view he is our number 1 defender, Thirsty probably was at the end of 2007 but you would think Moore has well and truly overtaken him and McGuane.

I remember he did play on Milne once but that was when he was giving us a bath and TW had already tried a number of different alternatives.

No probs fella's I just see Willy T as taking the Riewoldt types and Moore on the Robbo types.  Granted Moore takes Buddy as Buddy tends to be across HFF more than deep.

Think you may find that Willy had Fev with Moore & McGuane alternating the chop outs when dropping off Fisher.

Will was on Fev game 1...Fev tried to rough him up and Polly came in and set him straight.

Hughes
Riewoldt
Schulz
McGuane

If they all step up next year to play 22 games and are not on the fringes of selection each week, then we'll make the finals.

Simmonds - goes without saying how important he is to the side

Riewoldt - a key forward who can kick goals and set up his teammates. I hopeful he can step up, if not then Morton

Foley - the absolute key to our side in the mid field, turns games when they are in the balance.

Lids - Mainly because of his versatility - forward or mid in the main but has also shown he can do a job off a back flank

Apologies to Richo, McGuane, Newman and Tuck.

To maintain our 2008 standard we need these players to continue their excellent form -

Simmo - we saw what happened to the side when he went down a couple of years back. He is the most important player to our structure until our other rucks step up which appears years away yet.

Richo - Was a surprize packet of 2008. Is an out and out champion and nigh impossible to match up on or stop when on song.

Tuck - Our strength in the middle. Puts his head over the ball and body on the line week in and week out to feed our younger mids.

Morton - Was our best forward option throughout the year and was consistent by boot and on the lead all year. With talls to support him on the scoreboard he will get weaker opponents and be even more damaging. Great pick up.

To improve in 2009 we need to maintain what we have achieved and have these players improve/perform-

Hughes - We need a FF, period. Hughes had a couple of good games but went missing too often. Needs to learn how to lead more productively and improve his second efforts. If he can get his hands on the ball more he will be a great asset to the team otherwise  we need to bring in Schulz, Vickery or even Putt to fill this role because a power forward in crutial to our success.

White - has the pace, skills and now strength. 2009 will be his breakout year as a midfielder and with opposition teams focusing on Foley, LIds, Tuck, Cousins, Cogs and even Cotchin he will have space to shine.

GUS - With a strong powerful 2nd ruck we have a ruck combination that while be able to feed our improving mids much more consistently. Patto has heart but he is not able to relieve Simmo for long enough forcing Simmonds to have to shoulder too much of the ruck burden throughout the game and season.

Raines - We need a small, shutdown defender desperately. I am hoping Raines can fill the role otherwise Kingy, Bling, Polo or Hislop but it is a hole we need filled urgently.

Other players that I was tempted to include was Cuz, Bling and Cogs.

How times change in one season  :-\. Most of names mentioned either missed large chunks of the year or fell away badly to have a shocker of a season.

Thinking exactly the same! Little wonder we failed dismally! It shows how astute some of the posters here can be! :thumbsup

I just slapped myself as punishment for posting Simmonds. Oh father, the shame of it!

You must struggle to understand the word "if."

Infamy was spot on. IF those four had all stepped up we would have had a decent spine and structure and probably have made the finals.

It was never a prediction that they were going to have a good year.
