Cotchin a target for GC17 (Herald-Sun)

Let's go shopping
Mike Sheahan | May 16, 2009

IT'S never going to be part of the official name, but you may rest assured the new Gold Coast club is going to be commonly known as the raiders.

The construction of the AFL's 17th team is gathering pace, with existing clubs increasingly concerned about prospective player losses.

It's starting to get serious for several of them, particularly the big guns, Hawthorn and Geelong.

....

Then there's Richmond's outstanding youngster, Trent Cotchin, who has generated huge excitement in the north.

The problem for existing clubs is the AFL Commission has given Gold Coast a $1 million allowance in the TPP (total player payments).

That may not sound a lot when one player could get up to $1.2 million, but the expectation is more than 50 per cent of the original list will be youngsters locked into the fixed payment scheme for first and second-year draftees, with a slight premium.

Every Victorian club will be bracing for damage.

Particularly those who know they must rebuild. Particularly Richmond. More particularly if Cotchin is a target, as suspected.

One player agent said yesterday: "We used to talk about five-year plans, now they're going to be 10-15 years.

"We can all sit here and say what the Richmonds have got to do, but how do they do it?

"There's West Sydney to come the year after Gold Coast, remember."

What a time to be a talented young footballer in Australia.

What did we expect? Of course hes a target as is Brett Deledio - and problematic for us is that there is way way more than one club chasing the players. We could be in real trouble on this front, especially if cotchin and deledio decide that they will not see success at Richmond  :help

Have people noticed the articles recently- about having to rebuild and in particular our club- Richmond. We are under attack from the GC, they are setting us up and using the media to instill a perception that we are going nowhere fast- they want both Cotchin and Deledio.

There have been several articles now with the views of "experts" "recruiters" etc... We are being set up.

RFC management better get of there backsides or we face losing our 2 best players.

While I agree with these comments Ramps, from your viewpoint the option to tank will only make this problem worse.  We need to show some backbone and fight through this to the best of our ability - show the rest of the football world that we do have talent and we aren't as bad as what the results currently say - give the Cotchin's and Deledio's belief that there is a future here.  After all, we now have the salary very much under control so there is scope to reward these players commensurately.

17 reasons  ;D

Seriously though, just the quality of the 2 young men in question that's all

Have you considered for one minute that it isn't the club that is slowing things down? Could it possibly the player manager?

I dont know either way but some of these player managers don't give a rats about the player they just care about their cut

And a lot of the time it is these same jackals feeding their media counterparts with 'scoops' like this - just to inflate the value of their cut.
