My North Melb mate complains that Laidley and the coaches there never developed there kids properly.  He sites Daniel Wells as his prime example...a kid whose potential hasnt fully come through....

IMHO, development coaches are the key....

Tigers' development boost

Richmond has appointed David Newett as a player development coach and senior coach of its VFL affiliate Coburg.

Newett was a development coach at North Melbourne for the past two seasons, following a distinguished playing and coaching career, predominantly in Tasmania.

In 2005, Newett won the William Leitch Medal for the best player in Tasmania’s State League, while playing with Glenorchy.

Then, as playing coach of Glenorchy, he guided the team to runner-up in 2006 and the premiership in 2007.

While attending university in Adelaide in 2003, where he gained a human movement degree, Newett won the SANFL’s reserve-grade Magarey Medal, playing for the Woodville-West Torrens Eagles.

Newett also held a key role with the Tasmanian Institute of Sport for several years, as an Athlete Career and Education consultant.

Former Hawthorn player Tim Clarke will be Richmond’s other development coach in 2010.

Clarke, 27, played 96 games and kicked 39 goals for the Hawks in a career spanning eight seasons (2001-08), highlighted by three top-10 finishes in the club’s Best and Fairest award (2004-06).

In 2009, Clarke joined Coburg as a player and midfield coach, making an instant impact with his professionalism and leadership qualities.

Clarke, who has been completing an MBA at Monash University, is the son of former Geelong star, David Clarke.

Richmond’s player development manager in 2009, Tim Livingstone, will head up the Tigers’ bolstered development program next year.

Livingstone, 42, played eight senior games for Richmond in 1992-93 and is highly regarded by the Tigers for his work in the development area.

Tim Clarke is also a very good get for the RFC - he was excellent at Coburg in 2009. Fantastic leader

Harwick would know a fair bit about Clark too as Clark would played under Dimma at the Dawks  :cheers

Richmond shows interest in Garry Hocking as assistant coach (Age)
« Reply #101 on: October 19, 2009, 05:21:22 AM »
from today's Age...

North Melbourne is the frontrunner to sign Geelong Falcons coach Garry Hocking as an assistant coach for next season.

Kangaroos football manager Donald McDonald met with Hocking last week and the Kangaroos are believed to be keen to add the former Geelong midfielder to their coaching panel under new coach Brad Scott.

Richmond, Geelong and Port Adelaide have also shown interest.

Daniel Daly - our new forwards coach (RFC)

Richmond appoints forward coach
richmondfc.com.au
5:11 PM Tue 20 October, 2009

Richmond has appointed Daniel Daly as its forward coach for the 2010 season.

Daly had spent the past six years at North Melbourne working in a variety of full-time roles, including player welfare and development manager, forward scout and opposition coach.

Although Daly didn’t follow the traditional path to coaching at the elite level, not having played AFL football, he is held in very high regard throughout the competition due to his comprehensive knowledge of players’ strengths and weaknesses.

When Port Adelaide premiership coach Mark Williams was appointed coach of the “Dream Team’ for the Hall of Fame tribute match against Victoria in 2008, he tapped into Daly’s fountain of football knowledge, employing him as an assistant.

Daly, a former bank manager, played football with Balwyn in the Southern Football League, but his career finished prematurely after he underwent knee and shoulder reconstructions.

He then became an assistant coach at Balwyn, before landing a part-time job as a forward scout for Collingwood.

Such was the impression he made at Collingwood, when Dean Laidley, who’d been a Magpie assistant coach, took over as North Melbourne’s senior coach, he asked Daly to join him in a full-time role with the Roos.

Daly is the final addition to the Richmond coaching staff for the 2010 season, after the appointments of Damien Hardwick (senior coach), Justin Leppitsch (backline), Brendon Lade (ruck/midfield), David Newett (Coburg, development) and Tim Clarke (development) in the off season.

Certainly a hotchpotch of experience but not too many jobs for the boys among that lot.
Hopefully the football department has what it takes.
