Richmond pounces on young gun Dustin Martin

RICHMOND has launched contract negotiations with budding star Dustin Martin just six games into his AFL career.
With cashed-up Gold Coast and Greater Western Sydney recruiters circling, the Tigers have moved quickly to secure the services of their most talented teenager. They have already signed fellow "untouchables" Brett Deledio and Trent Cotchin to long-term deals.
In the depths of a dismal first year under coach Damien Hardwick, a third marquee signing would give hope to long-suffering Richmond fans. TAB Sportsbet yesterday rated the Tigers a $6 chance to go through the season without a win - a feat last "achieved" by North Melbourne in 1931.
Martin, pick No. 3 in last year's national draft, is contracted to the end of 2011 on a base salary of $57,300, plus payments of $2800 for every match. His earnings could rocket if the Tigers, now paying close to the minimum 92.5 per cent of the salary cap, offer a new deal. Richmond officials yesterday confirmed talks had started with Martin's manager Ricky Nixon.
The move follows Fremantle's decision in April to sign gun mature-age rookie Michael Barlow to a long-term deal after just two games as a Docker. Essendon and the Western Bulldogs yesterday confirmed new deals for stars Jobe Watson and Adam Cooney, leaving Gary Ablett the last uncontracted big fish.
