Tiger cub Martin making the most of Middle ParkMARK HAWTHORNE
May 19, 2010RICHMOND fans will be happy to hear the club is keeping a close eye on first-round draft pick Dustin Martin.
Indeed, club president Gary March couldn't keep closer tabs on the teenager, who is rumoured to be on the shopping list for Greater Western Sydney.
March has let the 17-year-old move into his impressive Middle Park House. Martin, the No. 3 pick in last year's draft, has looked an outstanding prospect in his seven games for the Tigers this season. So impressive, that the cashed-up expansion sides have targeted him, with some rather silly salary figures being bandied about.
The rookie is contracted to the end if 2011 on a base salary of $57,300, plus a $2800 match fee. The Tigers are on the front foot and negotiating a new deal. Sources at Richmond said the move into the president's home has nothing to do with any off-field problems, but the country boy, who has the motto ''Live Free. Die Free'' tattooed on his chest, was still adjusting to city life.
''There's nothing sinister, he's a quality young kid,'' Sporting Life was told. ''He just wanted a home environment after moving down from Bendigo.'' And the last Tigers player to reside there? That would be one Ben Cousins - another man with a rather significant tattoo - who used March's house for a month when he first joined the club. March and his family were overseas at the time.
Martin is expected to inhabit Cousins' old room until the end of the season.
