Wish we'd traded him. Would have gotten a good deal.

Richmond should play Dustin Martin deep in attack: David King (Herald-Sun)

Richmond should play Dustin Martin deep in attack, says Fox Footy expert David King
Herald-Sun

RICHMOND should take note of Dustin Martin’s devastating forward spell on Thursday night and keep the playmaker in attack, according to footy expert David King.

Martin played deep in the forward line and slotted 3.3 from 18 disposals to help spear the Tigers to their second victory this season ahead of clashes with top pair Hawthorn and Geelong.

The No. 3 draft pick was experimented as a half-back flanker over summer, with coach Damien Hardwick keen to unleash his creative ball use.

But King, who awarded Martin two votes in the 43-point belting of Brisbane Lions, said opposition clubs would be happy to see Martin head to the backline.

“He’s just such a damaging player. He’s so strong, he’s a good full-forward, he’s a good one-on-one player (and) he’s a good midfielder,” King said yesterday.

“I’m not sure whether Richmond have worked out how to best use him just yet. He’s such a hard match-up. When he gets the footy they score, so his 18 (touches) is better than other players’ 25s, 26s.

“His ability to break tackles and get shots away is something you need in the forward line and I think (Hardwick) will use him in the forward line.”

Martin booted 79.69 in 2011-3 and has amassed the clear second-most shots on goal for Richmond behind spearhead Jack Riewoldt in that time.

Riewoldt pointed to Martin’s 55 shots last year, saying the Tigers need him to get to dangerous spots, while Hardwick praised his versatility.

“He reminds me a bit of a Mark Riccuito. A guy who played half-back, midfield and forward as well,” Hardwick said.

“He’s only going to get better and better. He had six shots on goal and one taken away from him for a free kick, so if we can get that output from him every week it’s going to be a good result.”

Hardwick defended dropped forward Ty Vickery, saying he fell out of the side to aid team balance.

Richmond coach Damien Hardwick addresses the media after his side's 106-63 victory over the Brisbane Lions at the Gabba.

“Those three guys (Vickery, Riewoldt and Ben Griffiths) individually have been playing OK. Collectively though it just wasn’t working for us, our first possession inside 50 was poor our score percentage was poor and we just had to make a change.

“Ty unfortunately was the guy to go that went out.”

Riewoldt said the Tigers did a bit of soul-searching after their horror opening month and he felt the pressure to perform.

“The club was in a tough position, and by no means are we out of that tough position yet. We’re still 2-3 and we want to get back to evening the ledger and start getting ahead of it,” he told the Tigers’ website.

“A 10-day break (before the Hawks) is a bit of a godsend on the back of two six-day breaks.”

Martin is a crap kick for goal, stats say it all. He's a great kick for where he wants it to go, e.g another player, he just can't get it through the big ones often enough.
Centre or backline UNTIL he learns to kick straight for goal, and when he does, he will be awesome forward.

I agree with Kingy. Play him 70% forward and 30% in the midfield. Play him across half forward and then isolate him deep. Keep them guessing!
Take out Jack and Richo before him and who has been our next best forward over the last 15 years. We desperately need other avenues to goal and there is nothing on our list ATM that can hit the scoreboard regularly. Last year our backline worked well, our midfield was very good but our forwardline struggled. We have a weapon in Dusty, FFS Dimma use him forward and play Jack where he plays best too. We have some genuine match winners, let them play!
It's funny how it works, you kick more goals than your opposition and you win games.  :shh

Imagine if we had a decent small man as well??

Been mooted since we beat Sydney at the 'G in 2012 and he carved them up in the forward 50. King the hindsight hero strikes again.

Dusty is not a midfielder's backside. Doesn't work both ways near enough.
He was very sloppy the other night both with the ball and defensively.
I often wonder to myself if he is the cancer in this playing list?
Play him forward sure, maybe he'll snag a few goals but geez he is one of the most overrated players on our list.

I think the way they played him last night was the correct mix - first half mid, second half forward. He can run himself ragged through the guts then 'rest' forward. I also believe this will only work if we continue not to go too tall in our F50. We cant afford to see the ball rush out of our F50 because we are too weak at ground level and too slow to tackle/pressure. Keep mixing it up with Dysty, Cot h and Lids I say rather than two tall forwards and a resting ruck

“He reminds me a bit of a Mark Riccuito. A guy who played half-back, midfield and forward as well,” Hardwick said.

OMFG WAT. THE COACH (HARDWICK, NOT ME) SAYS DUSTY IS LIKE ROO WHO ALSO PLAYED DOWN BACK. Now, wasn't Hardwick correct when he said he wanted more goals out of Cotch? Or do you only pick and choose quotes to suit your argument?
