Richmond should play Dustin Martin deep in attack, says Fox Footy expert David KingHerald-Sun
April 18, 2014 6:00PMRICHMOND should take note of Dustin Martin’s devastating forward spell on Thursday night and keep the playmaker in attack, according to footy expert David King.
Martin played deep in the forward line and slotted 3.3 from 18 disposals to help spear the Tigers to their second victory this season ahead of clashes with top pair Hawthorn and Geelong.
The No. 3 draft pick was experimented as a half-back flanker over summer, with coach Damien Hardwick keen to unleash his creative ball use.
But King, who awarded Martin two votes in the 43-point belting of Brisbane Lions, said opposition clubs would be happy to see Martin head to the backline.
“He’s just such a damaging player. He’s so strong, he’s a good full-forward, he’s a good one-on-one player (and) he’s a good midfielder,” King said yesterday.
“I’m not sure whether Richmond have worked out how to best use him just yet. He’s such a hard match-up. When he gets the footy they score, so his 18 (touches) is better than other players’ 25s, 26s.
“His ability to break tackles and get shots away is something you need in the forward line and I think (Hardwick) will use him in the forward line.”
Martin booted 79.69 in 2011-3 and has amassed the clear second-most shots on goal for Richmond behind spearhead Jack Riewoldt in that time.
Riewoldt pointed to Martin’s 55 shots last year, saying the Tigers need him to get to dangerous spots, while Hardwick praised his versatility.
“He reminds me a bit of a Mark Riccuito. A guy who played half-back, midfield and forward as well,” Hardwick said.
“He’s only going to get better and better. He had six shots on goal and one taken away from him for a free kick, so if we can get that output from him every week it’s going to be a good result.”
Hardwick defended dropped forward Ty Vickery, saying he fell out of the side to aid team balance.
Richmond coach Damien Hardwick addresses the media after his side's 106-63 victory over the Brisbane Lions at the Gabba.
“Those three guys (Vickery, Riewoldt and Ben Griffiths) individually have been playing OK. Collectively though it just wasn’t working for us, our first possession inside 50 was poor our score percentage was poor and we just had to make a change.
“Ty unfortunately was the guy to go that went out.”
Riewoldt said the Tigers did a bit of soul-searching after their horror opening month and he felt the pressure to perform.
“The club was in a tough position, and by no means are we out of that tough position yet. We’re still 2-3 and we want to get back to evening the ledger and start getting ahead of it,” he told the Tigers’ website.
“A 10-day break (before the Hawks) is a bit of a godsend on the back of two six-day breaks.”
