Sam McClure tonight still harping on about Dusty ::).

McClure first said Dusty shouldn't be at Richmond (you made up that BS claiming Dusty was going to leave last year, Sam :nopity).

He then tried to claim Dusty could play the next 3 years at Gold Coast for virtually the same salary he gets now for one year :huh3. Even Hutchy said it was the dumbest thing he has ever heard and asked McClure if he would come on the show (Footy Classified) for the next 3 years getting paid for just one year.

What an idiot! Let it go for goodness sake, Sam :stupid

Would hate to see him in another jumper.
Thing is with the age demographic of the list if he did go it would help if we got something decent for him.
Even the club has to admit this year is the last throw of the dice there will be no finals next year.

Sam McClure has decided that instead of just doing his job of reporting the news, he has to BE the news.     :-\

Jon Ralph on twitter:

From Moneyball last week. Dusty Martin determined to play on past his current deal. Happy at RFC. Of course things can change but why the hell would he take a pay cut on a new multi-year deal? And why would Tigers pay any of his deal to play anywhere else?

Dusty had a chat to Wayne Campbell last year. Martin stayed. Suns have just fixed their cap position so while they could ask again there is absolutely no reason why Martin should accept a discount on the $1.2m-$1.3m he is owed next year. At Richmond or another club

‘Are you fair dinkum?’ Hosts at war as $1.4m Dusty trade idea ‘dumbest argument ever heard’

News.com.au
June 6th, 2023

A radical call to trade Richmond superstar Dustin Martin, and get him to take $100,000 to play an extra two seasons, has been shut down as “the dumbest argument ever heard.”

Martin is contracted to the end of 2024 on a back-loaded deal believed to be worth around $1.4 million next year.

The 31-year-old is in the twilight of his career and has previously been linked to a move away from Melbourne, with the Sydney Swans and Gold Coast Suns floated as destinations.

But given the three-time premiership player is past his prime, the Tigers have been urged to trade Martin to free up salary cap space.

“He just can’t be at Richmond next year,” journalist Sam McClure said on Nine’s Footy Classified.

“They should have found a way to move him on the end of last year. He was keen on looking elsewhere. There were clubs that were coming with contracts for him.”

Kane Cornes said it would be a “big call” to dump Martin and open the Tigers to “backlash to trading one of your greatest ever”.

Martin is on track to notch up 300 games next season and will go down as one of Richmond’s best ever players.

“One of your greatest ever, legend in the Hall of Fame one day, can’t be at Richmond next year,” Cornes said.

“Why can’t he be there? It’s not as if he’s playing poorly. Is there a buyer?”

McClure said Martin leaving Richmond to play at another club “wouldn’t change his legacy one bit” but was crucial to freeing up salary cap space.

“He’s on $1.4 million Kane,” McClure said.

“This is the same club you’ve criticised for spending money on (Tim) Taranto and (Jacob) Hopper. They’ve got Dustin there on $1.4 million when they could have negotiated a trade to clear that salary cap.

“There is not one person at Richmond, not one supporter that would begrudge Dustin Martin for finishing his career somewhere else.”

McClure agreed trading Martin “looks bad now if they did it because it’s mixed messaging”. “I’m just saying going into next year with him being the age that he is on $1.4 million,” he said.

While Stuart Dew has the Gold Coast Suns in the hunt for a maiden finals appearance, former Tigers coach Damien Hardwick has been mentioned as a candidate to take over the Suns.

“I don’t think he’s a great choice for the Suns for where they are and the players they’ve got coming through,” co-host Craig Hutchison said.

“But you can understand from an AFL point of view, a marketing sense. I’m not sure the Suns and AFL would necessarily be aligned on this one. And it would need AFL money.”

But McClure insisted Martin could leave the Tigers and go to the Suns on significantly less money.

“Hutchy, you’re deal-maker and a modern thinker in this sense. His deal can be scrunched up like a piece of paper and thrown in the bin,” he said.

“Gold Coast Suns give him say three years at $500,000, just over the average salary. That gives his $1.5 million.”

But Hutchison disagreed, firing back: “He’s going to play two more years and earn the same money? What commercial world are you living in? Are you fair dinkum?”

McClure: “Three years at 500 grand?”

Hutchison: “Versus $1.4 million? Give me a spell. That’s the dumbest argument I’ve ever heard.”

McClure: “Are you going to let me finish my sentence before you continue?”

Hutchison: “I don’t think it’s worth doing.”

Boom, mic drop. Hutchy 1, McClure 0.

Essendon great Matthew Lloyd said he believes Martin will “see out his career at Richmond”.

“Unless you’re thinking he’s going to help you win the flag, I don’t see how another club takes him next season,” Lloyd said.

“I don’t think the Suns should take Dustin Martin. I don’t think the Sydney Swans should take Dustin Martin.”

I don't get that statement that Martin's contract is heavily back ended

When the Martin contract was up for grabs, and North were chasing him hard, it co-incided with the media rights negotiations. So we had this huge amount of funds and as a result of that and North offering big $ my understanding is that forward loaded the contract and his actual $ in the last few years was much lower. Much lower than the !.4m McClure is stating

This also helped when we got Lynch. We back ended his contract so that as Martin's $ declined Lynch's increased.

Anyway I am probably totally wrong

I think Sammy is one dumb stuff that’s what I think.

Can someone pass that on when they message him on twitter or whatever rubbish platform that flog is on.

1.5 salary vrs 500k per year x 3. Dusty has to work 2 years for $200k total. Less saving if it’s 2 year contract elsewhere.

He stays and he will likely be on 400k in 2025 anyway.

Yeah okay let’s all do that deal.  :lol

Cornes is actually making sense.  After his piece on baker I’m starting to think he may have  swapped seats with Maclure.

Garry Lyon, Jonathan Brown and Eddie Betts were saying post-game that you can see Dusty is as full invested as ever and given his huge numbers last night he only needs to really impact the scoreboard (turn those 3 behinds into goals) to be back near his scarily best.

35 disposals (22k, 13h, 11c, 17u, 51.4% eff.)
2 marks
3 tackles (1 F50 tackle)
6 clearances (1 centre clearance)
8 inside 50s
514 metres gained
3 intercepts
8 score involvements
1 goal assist
3 behinds
89% time on ground

‘Head’s in the game’: Promising Dusty sign amid speculation around future

Fox Footy
June 20th, 2023

Richmond superstar Dustin Martin looks “invigorated” under caretaker coach Andrew McQualter, according to Fox Footy pundits, amid questions around his future at Punt Road.

Speculation swirled around Martin’s next move after long-time coach Damien Hardwick’s shock mid-season departure from the Tigers, having started their careers alongside each other at Richmond in 2010 and playing crucial roles in its three premiership triumphs.

Martin, 31, who’s contracted until the end of 2024, took an extended absence from the club last year to deal with his father’s death, while he’s previously been linked to Sydney and the Gold Coast.

But according to triple-premiership winning Lion Jonathan Brown, Martin’s brilliant last fortnight — racking up 27 touches and one goal and 35 disposals and three goals respectively under caretaker coach Andrew McQualter — is some of his best form in years.

“I think he’s had a pretty good season, but definitely the last two weeks,” Brown said of Martin on Fox Footy’s On the Couch.

“When you look at his body language, his investment in the game and his energy around his teammates and the defensive side of things.

“Once his starts (consistently) hitting the scoreboard, he’ll be back to his level we saw two or three years ago.

“(Against the Saints was) the first time he’s had over 30 disposals since Round 5 of 2021 — that was against St Kilda also. He’s getting back into the midfield, like (Trent) Cotchin ... I just think he looks invigorated.”

Former Melbourne skipper Garry Lyon highlighted a moment inside the last two minutes of the Tigers’ win over the Saints where Martin sprinted back defensively, labelling it the “best sign” of Richmond’s joyous night where it also saluted former skipper Cotchin’s 300th game in style.

“The reaction of Dustin Martin here to snap into defensive mode and to start directing traffic ... it was instantaneous, his head’s in the game,” Lyon told On the Couch.

“Of everything I saw (in Richmond’s win over St Kilda), that was the best sign at the end of it.”

The Tigers as a collective have looked re-energised under McQualter, going 3-1 to revive their season, climbing into ninth place and just half a game behind the eighth-placed Crows.

McQualter, who’s been at the club for nearly 10 years, earlier this month said Martin was as “invested” as he’s ever been.

“It‘s almost been three years in a row. We’re about the same time of the year where the chat about Dustin comes,” he said.

“Dustin’s in a terrific spot at the moment. He’s as invested as you could ever imagine in our footy club.

“He’s happy, he’s having a great time playing footy and he’s playing great footy for us as well.”

Dusty days: Has star Tiger been reborn under new coach?

Jon Pierik
The Age
June 24, 2023 — 4.00pm

Dustin Martin has turned back the clock and been given greater licence to spend more time further afield, as the Tigers work towards a finals “miracle” under caretaker coach Andrew McQualter.

Martin, 31, was particularly influential in the Tigers’ two wins heading into this weekend’s mid-season bye, having 27 disposals against Fremantle and 35 against St Kilda, the latter the first time he has had at least 30 touches since round five, 2021, also against the Saints.

However, it’s where Martin has been used which has been noted by rival clubs, for he has spent a greater percentage of his time in the midfield over the past fortnight (80.6 per cent) than he had through the opening 12 rounds (67.7 per cent).

There has been a significant change in his time inside 50, dropping from 30.9 per cent to 14.5 per cent over the past fortnight.

While still a relatively low percentage, the Tigers great has also found himself venturing into defensive 50 more often, this escalating from 1.3 per cent to 4.8 per cent.

This balance over the past fortnight aligns more with his 2017 Brownlow Medal year, when he spent 75.8 per cent of his time in the midfield, 18.4 per cent up forward and 5.8 per cent defensively, enjoying one of the greatest individual seasons of all time, capped with a breakthrough Richmond premiership and the first of his three Norm Smith medals.

Tigers great, and now senior advisor, Neil Balme said Martin had been instructed to venture further afield.

“Yes, he is doing a bit more midfield stuff, as well as playing up the field as a forward,” Balme said.

“Today’s footy, wherever the ball is, virtually everyone is within a kick of it, no matter where they are. You have to go to encourage them to get nearer the ball, and he is doing that very well.

“And a couple of the other teams haven’t really played as tightly on him because he does that, and that does make it a bit easier for him.”

However, there may be a trade-off with Martin’s rejigged role, for he has been goalless over the past three weeks, including the past fortnight. He had 13 through the opening 11 rounds, including four from only 19 touches in a four-goal win over Geelong in round nine.

Martin, whether through age, fitness, injury or pure class, has been seen as more of a forward in recent seasons, regularly playing forward of centre, but his toughness in the contest, penetrating kick and poise mean he can be influential across the entire field, particularly with the Tigers now looking to win more clearances.

“He can play a bit,” Balme said facetiously.

Martin is enjoying his football under McQualter, and the Tigers remain confident he will be at the club next year and complete the final year of his contract.

The Tigers, having had only three wins and a draw and slipping to 14th on the ladder before Damien Hardwick quit after round 10, have won three straight, and are within a game of the top eight, as they prepare to head to Brisbane and face the Lions in a Thursday night blockbuster.

They will need to win six, possibly seven, of their final nine home-and-away games to claim what had seemed an unlikely finals berth.

“The players have responded really positively to the fact we needed to recover our position, and we have done really well. It would be a miracle [to make finals] going forward, but we haven’t given up on the hope of a miracle because our best has always been pretty good, and we are starting to deliver it a bit more now,” Balme said.

McQualter has begun to stamp his own imprint on the game plan. Champion Data analysis shows the Tigers have leapt from 14th to fifth for disposal differential over the past month, opting to hold on to the ball more through uncontested possessions, while also curbing their mark-play on percentage.

There is a greater emphasis on clearance differential, vaulting from 16th after round 10 to eighth. Under three-time premiership coach Hardwick, winning clearances was not a priority.

The Tigers have also surged from 15th for points from forward-half intercepts to fourth, and from last to third for scores per inside 50 percentage.

“All those things, that’s exactly what Damien would have been doing anyway because the numbers are the numbers, and our style is our style,” Balme said.

“What do the numbers tell you? We have to improve our stoppage clearances, or hold the ball more in our forward line, or whatever it is.

“While Andrew has come in, he hasn’t changed the way we have played. Obviously, it’s slightly different because he has a slightly different way of presenting it, but we are still virtually playing the same game, the assistant coaches are still all doing their jobs similarly.

“We have elevated Kane Lambert to do ‘Mini’s’ [McQualter’s] job, and Mini is doing Damien’s job. It’s not that different and the players have really responded well to it.”

Should McQualter, 37, deliver a finals berth, the highly rated assistant, and one-time St Kilda and Gold Coast player, will have even stronger claims to permanently win the top role.

“What Andrew has been doing has been really good. His relationship with the players has been fantastic, he has challenged them well and a slightly different voice is sometimes a positive,” Balme said.

The Tigers are hopeful star midfielder Jacob Hopper (calf) will return on Thursday after a five-week absence, but there is no timeline for key forward Tom Lynch. Balme said he hoped Lynch will play again this year, but the Jack Dyer medallist is still working his way back from a fractured foot.
