I'd prefer Marto be left to let his on-field performances do the talking for him. They say more than enough.

Dustin Martin (129) and Tom Scully (49) trailed him.

Where's Hanneberry?

Dusty was robbed.

Wasn't a first year player, he was drafted in 2008

DON'T expect a change to the criteria for eligibility for the AFL Rising Star and Brownlow Medal any time soon.

Richmond's Dustin Martin was desperately unlucky to miss out on the Rising Star award, all because he did the team thing and accepted a 90-odd point reprimand early on in the season.

He had no choice - if he took it on at the tribunal and lost he would be seen to be selfish.

But because the base charge was over 100 points he was ineligible, as are players for the Brownlow Medal.

The AFL system virtually forced players to accept early pleas.

Most players only take on charges if they are not risking an extra week's suspension.

But the AFLPA says its constituents have bigger fish to fry - they want to introduce the use of precedents - and are unlikely to challenge the rules this year.

Sooner or later a player will lose the Brownlow Medal for a minor offence that should have been cleared by the match review panel.

But because the system forces players to accept their penalties, there is the distinct possibility it could all end in tears.

Brownlow haul caps Martin’s debut

Richmond young gun Dustin Martin can add another impressive statistic to his achievements in his first year of football, after last night’s Brownlow Medal count.

The 19-year-old polled six votes in the Brownlow in his debut season - the most by a Richmond player in his first season since Craig Lambert in 1988.

Lambert, who played 123 games for the Tigers before moving to Brisbane, polled 10 votes in that year.

In this year’s count, Martin’s votes came against West Coast in Round 12 (one), Brisbane in Round 13 (two), Fremantle in Round 15 (two) and Adelaide in Round 18 (one).

Martin (6), Daniel Connors (3) and Mitch Morton (1) received Brownlow votes for the first time in their careers.

Hannebery got 9 votes (3 x 3).

Edit:  Sorry CV, beat me to it!

Edit #2:  Barlow got 12 (2 x 3, 3 x 2).

Edit # 3: As Wayne said, Hannebery was a 2nd year player.

Age today saying we were forced to "pay through the nose" to keep Martin away from GWS' clutches.....

Richmond was the club that first identified how a lowly club was vulnerable to expansion cradle snatching. The Tigers were sufficiently concerned about Dustin Martin's exposure to market forces (having a dad based in GWS territory) that they went to Andrew Demetriou to plead their case; they signed him soon afterwards. But they paid through the nose.
