Peter Burge's update on Dusty:

Dustin Martin, kidney, (long-term)

“Really unfortunate for Dustin, and obviously the team. The incident (was) just before three-quarter time. He came off the ground, and it looked pretty bad on the field, and he was obviously in a bit of pain.

“He ran off, and he said he was just winded, but the doctors took him down to the rooms for further assessment, and they were a little bit suspicious there was a bit more going on.

“He was taken to hospital for further scans and observation, and obviously the result was a lacerated kidney, which is fairly serious, and it will mean he can’t take any further part in the season. He is not allowed to have any contact for three months.

“He is still up there on the Gold Coast in hospital. He will probably be released in a couple of days once the specialists give him the all clear and we are looking forward to having him back around the Club again soon.

“All the guys and staff have been really good and sending him get-well messages and all those sorts of things. He is really appreciative of that, and we look forward to seeing him soon.”

So...if the season gets delayed by a month we could have him back for finals and leave him deep forward?

Just a bit of well sentimentality. Dustin is about how freakin  damaging he is with ball in hand.  Doesnt need a lot of pill and fmd not the biggest winner of the pill but his ability to take on the hard kick despite the odd bad one has been second to none. FMD i wish we could find two of hiim.
Just imagine two dusty,s running around .

Mitch Robinson talks Dustin Martin "freak accident" collision (SEN)

MITCH ROBINSON TALKS DUSTIN MARTIN "FREAK ACCIDENT" COLLISION

By Nic Negrepontis
SEN
21 July 2021

Brisbane midfielder Mitch Robinson has labelled his collision with Dustin Martin a “freak accident”.

The two clashed last Friday night, leaving the three-time Norm Smith Medallist with a kidney injury.

Martin remains in hospital and will not be able to participate in contract training for at least three months, ruling him out of the home-and-away season and likely finals.

Robinson said something did feel strange about the collision.

“When he went down I felt something pretty sharp. When you hit someone you can feel something that’s gone in there. I felt a slushy thing in the corner of his hip,” the Lions veteran told SEN’s Pat and Heals.

“He went to bump me and my arm went under his arm and hit him with (my forearm), I thought it was like hip-pointer. I thought it was like a corky in your hip. They’re pretty solid when that happens.

“When he stayed down I thought ‘maybe he’s just winded’ and then when he went off the ground and I saw the replay and he was in a bit of agony.

“I was like ‘oh damn that’s not good maybe it’s a punctured lung or his ribs’.

“I did send him a text. The next day I got his number off one of the boys and sent him a message.

“Didn’t get a reply, but I’m guessing he’s probably been flooded with messages.

“Hopefully it’s not as bad as it says and three months off training is a pretty hectic injury and hopefully he comes back bigger and stronger. It was just a freak accident I think.”

Richmond star Dustin Martin yet to be released from hospital

Russell Gould
NCA NewsWire
JULY 23, 2021

Richmond superstar Dustin Martin remains in hospital on the Gold Coast and is “more sore than he thought” after suffering a lacerated kidney in last week’s win over Brisbane.

The Brownlow medallist is sidelined for the rest of the season and won’t be back in contact training for three months after he and hard-nosed Lion Mitch Robinson collided in the third term of the game. The knock left the Tiger on all fours once he left the field.

Tigers coach Damien Hardwick said the star on-baller was in “good spirits” but wasn’t sure when he would be released from hospital.

“Dustin is still in hospital, we are not too sure when he’s going to come out. At this stage it looks likely, hopefully, over the weekend, but we are not too sure at the moment,” Hardwick said on Friday.

“The doctors are still looking at him and making sure he fully recovers.

“He’s sore. He’s a very strong lad, but he’s certainly a lot more sore than he thought he would be. It’s a significant injury, which is why he won’t play football for the remainder of the year.”

Hardwick said Martin was well placed to handle the mental side of missing the rest of the season and being away from his teammates.

“He’d love to be around us, he’d love to be with us, but he’s dealing with it the best he can,” he said.

“The one thing I’d say about Dustin is mentally he handles these things very well, he does a lot of work in that space. He’s in as good a place as he can be at present.”

Richmond will allow superstar Dustin Martin to remain in Queensland as he begins his rehabilitation from a lacerated kidney.

Martin was discharged from hospital on Sunday, nine days after an on-field collision with Brisbane's Mitch Robinson ended his season.

The 30-year-old will stay in Queensland instead of returning home to Melbourne, which remains in COVID-19 lockdown.

12 weeks from incident is early October.

If the season were to be delayed for 2+ weeks and we went deep into finals I reckon he'd be putting his hand up to sit at FF.

season isn't going to be delayed AFL have made that pretty clear

even if it was he still wouldn't be right to play

3 months of nil contact and at the moment basically no training at all, means no conditioning

Yes, he'd probably put his hand up but he still won't be playing. Too much to lose. Specialists have said not footy for the remainder of this year.. Club won't risk it thank goodness

Richmond need to make the finals first because his name is mentioned.

Need to win all 4 matches which will be all difficult.

GWS want that spot and North Melbourne move the football better than us.

Star Richmond midfielder Dustin Martin, who suffered a season-ending lacerated kidney earlier this month, is still in Queensland and must pass more medical tests before being granted permission to fly back to Melbourne.
