The bloke has been out for ages with injury and needs a chance to get back into it.  I reckon he has something to offer

Agree. Very good mark. Needs to work on his decision marking but that can be improved upon with good coaching.
After 7 seasons, if he haven't improved his decision making the best decision is to simply cut our loses.

I don't mind Astbury. He has been absolutely crueller by injury.

I actually think he is not a key position back. If he plays back at all, he should be on the third tall. If there is no third tall, he either plays in the twos or we swing him forward. He is an excellent mark - something we lack quite a bit.

I just don't think we play him to his strengths and we definitely have not developed him well.

For all of that, I would trade him and make room for another guy who could do better. Just another career destroyed by Tigeritis. ;D

Astbury on RSN ...

There are high hopes with Richmond's David Astbury in 2017. The Tigers play their first game on Friday night against the Crows.

------------------------------------------------------

Talented Richmond tall key defender Dave Astbury is approaching the 2017 season with renewed confidence, on the back of some long-awaited, sustained football last year.

Astbury managed to string together 19 games in 2016 – the most of his seven-year AFL career.

He had endured a horror injury run, after playing 17 senior games in an impressive 2010 debut season with the Tigers.

In the five seasons that followed, Astbury was restricted to just 24 appearances at the game’s highest level, primarily because of a spate of injuries.

Become a member before February 28 and you will BEAT THE PRICE RISE!

But in 2016, Astbury finally cast aside his injury woes, to become a valuable contributor in Richmond’s back half, averaging 13.5 disposals and 6.7 marks per game.

He was ranked fourth among the Tigers’ playing group for total marks, and 15th in the AFL competition for marks per game.

“The continuity that I got in 2016 was the most important thing,” Astbury said on RSN.

“Once you get a few games under your belt, you get a bit more confident.

“The back half of the year, I started to perform at the level I know I can.

“It was a big step forward, but now very much looking forward to 2017.”

Astbury, who turns 26 on Sunday (February 26), feels “in really good shape” to tackle the 2017 season . . .

“It is the first off-season, where I haven’t had to undergo surgery,” he said.

“It was really good to get a good off-season training block to prepare myself for the pre-season.

“So far this pre-season, touchwood, it’s been pretty seamless.

“I’ve had my best pre-season to date.”

26 years old - and still waiting for him to play at an "average" AFL standard.

And people wonder why we remain mediocre....

Nothing against David of course because it's not his fault he as been injured and also it's not his fault he has been retained by the club. However, to this point he hasn't showed the temperament of a premiership backman. He is a slow decision maker and his disposal and pace are not first class.

I thought he was serviceable tonight. My main issue is with his decision making with ball in hand.
“I find it nearly impossible to make those judgments, but he is certainly up there with the really important ones, he is certainly up there with the Francis Bourkes and the Royce Harts and the Kevin Bartlett and the Kevin Sheedys, there is no doubt about that,” Balme said.
