Here's the thread - might help explain my softness.

Have to say the target 10,000 new member campaign has been a resounding success IMHO. Even at the current level of around 6000 new members its been an outstanding success.

Getting more members than Essendon now.  2 weeks ago we were >7k behind them, now we are <6k - we've been catching up constantly for the past month.

We're now >5k behind them.  A win in Round 1 would nearly see us pass them I reckon - even getting close would be a very good effort given how they have jumped up this year because of the 'H' factor.

I'm surprised after Friday night that all the Bomber fans wouldn't have jumped on the bandwagon the way bomberblitz was carrying on.

Anyway here's a comparison where all clubs were this time last year (Feb 19, 2010).
Coll'wood     44,649
Hawthorn     43,023
Essendon    32,351
St Kilda       29,384
Geelong      27,149
Richmond    26,808
Carlton        26,707
W.Bulldogs  23,901
Port Adel.    22,312
Melbourne    22,166
Brisbane      21,618
North           17,254

The Lions membership is down by 25%. Some would be GC defectors but Voss' disasterous recruiting record and them being spoon favourites would be the major cause.

As for us we're up by around 6000 on this time last year and about on par with the 2009 Cuz bandwagon figures.

24/02/2010:                                                               Combined - 28,412
23/02/2009: Ticketed - 27,171; Non-ticketed - 6,979; Combined - 34,150
18/02/2008: Ticketed - 20,095; Non-ticketed - 5,272; Combined - 25,367
18/02/2007: Ticketed - 19,138; Non-ticketed - 5,034; Combined - 24,172
19/02/2006: Ticketed - 17,959; Non-ticketed - 4,792; Combined - 22,751
20/02/2005: Ticketed - 18,363; Non-ticketed - 4,379; Combined - 22,742

4 weeks ago we were almost 8k behind them. Now under 5k behind. Hopefully in another month on the eve of Round 1 only 2k behind

Its funny but ive never really taken hawthorns membership numbers seriously, there figures never translate to crowds and most people in the football world know it...

I have never taken the hawks seriously especially in 1979 & 1980 when most members of there cheersquad were gaybirds.
But that said you must remember that Richmond won alot of support during late 60's and seventies cashing in on sustained success. Hawthorn has benefited also on the success of the 80's with a whole generation of young kids now in there 20's and early 30's.
It is a tribute to how loyal and patient Richmond supporters have been to have a whole generation of mediocrity and punishment but to have an average attendance which is well above Hawthorn in most home and away seasons during that time.
