Richmond set for historic Cairns AFL game

AS much as winning, Richmond midfielder Daniel Jackson says this week's AFL match against the Gold Coast in Cairns is about bringing the Tigers' young playing list closer together.

The Tigers arrive in the Far North on Thursday for Saturday's historic showdown with the Suns at Cazalys.

The clash, which is a Richmond home match, is the first regular-season AFL fixture to be played in Cairns and has been locked in as an annual event until 2013.

Jackson, who is part of the Tigers’ leadership group, said the club would use the trip as a bonding exercise.

"We’re a good travelling group. We get on really well, everyone’s really good mates and it’s actually good to get away as a team for a couple of days," he said.

"Funnily enough, some teams don’t like travelling that further distance. But for us the further away it is, the earlier you have to go up, the more time you have to spend together, the more fun we have and it seems the better we play."

Despite the inexperience of their roster, the Tigers remain in contention for this season’s top eight.

Jackson, who is averaging more than 20 disposals in 2011, said the Tigers wanted to evolve into a side capable of making it deep into September.

"There’s probably been a few games this year we’ve let slip that’ve cost us being in the eight right now," he said.

"But we’re young and developing. Our main aim this year is to make sure we’ve got some continuous improvement and that we’re always moving forward.

"Once we have a bit of experience and maturity all the excuses go out the door and it’s going to be about cementing that position in the top eight."

A portion of the Tigers’ large southern fan base is set to travel to Cairns for the game and Jackson expects the black and gold army to make their voices heard.

"It’ll be interesting to see what the crowd distribution is, but I’m yet to go to a place where there haven’t been more Richmond supporters," he said.

"And if there wasn’t more of them, they were certainly the loudest and most passionate ones."

The Tigers will hold a public training session at Cazalys from 2.30pm-3.30pm on Friday.

Tigers and Suns players will then be involved in a free AFL super clinic from 3.30pm-5.30pm.

Gary Ablett has been cleared of any major damage to his knee and is a chance to take on Richmond in Cairns this weekend if he can get through Wednesday's main training session unscathed.

SUMMARY
Richmond has tumbled from finals contender to also-ran in recent times. Last weekend's defeat at the hands of Essendon was the Tigers' fourth loss in their past five games.
 
The poor result against the Bombers came after Richmond had led by 23 points in the third quarter. But the Tigers conceded the final 10 goals of the game, a fade-out that infuriated their fans.

The Suns continue to turn over their players as they try and settle on a squad for next season. They kicked only four goals against the Sydney Swans at Metricon Stadium in round 16, but a key reason for that was the knee injury suffered by their inspirational skipper Gary Ablett.

The star midfielder had to be subbed out of the match against the Swans, and he must regain his fitness if Guy McKenna's men are to have any chance of upsetting the Tigers.

This is the first meeting between Richmond and Gold Coast and also the first home and away game to be played at Cazaly's Stadium in Cairns.

QUESTION MARKS
Richmond has received an estimated $1,000,000 for selling its home fixtures against Port Adelaide and Gold Coast, but is the money worth it? Given the Tigers were beaten by the lowly Power in Darwin, and have been a shadow of their former selves in the weeks since, the policy is becoming harder to defend.
 
Can Gold Coast hold the Tigers to a respectable score? With Jack Riewoldt and Tyrone Vickery forming a dangerous duo in Richmond's forward 50, the Suns' tall defenders could be in for a tough afternoon. However, Gold Coast does have two in-form small defenders who will pounce if the ball hits the turf. Jarrod Harbrow collected 25 disposals against the Swans, while Joel Wilkinson showed promise with 17 possessions in just his third game.

Richmond fans in Cairns this weekend will have the chance to rub shoulders with Club royalty before the Tigers take on the Gold Coast.

Richmond’s North Queensland Supporters Group will host a function this Friday July 15, from 7-9pm, at the North Cairns Tigers Australian Football and Sporting Club, corner McNamara and Behan Streets, Manunda.

The event will be hosted by Richmond Team of the Century member Dale Weightman, with special guests including 1980 premiership players Michael Roach and Jim Jess, and AFL games record holder Michael Tuck.

A Richmond assistant coach will also be on hand to preview Saturday’s match at Cazaly’s Stadium.

There will be raffles, auction items and giveaways, finger food will be supplied, and drinks are at bar prices.

Bookings are essential.  The cost is $20 per head.

EMERGING Richmond back-man Alex Rance doesn't believe the Far North's heat will cause his team many problems during Saturday's AFL clash against the Gold Coast at Cazalys.
 
Maximum temperatures have been hovering around the mid-teens in Melbourne this week, but the thermometer is expected to top 20 degrees in Cairns for Saturday afternoon’s match.

The Tigers lost to Port Adelaide in warm conditions in Darwin earlier this season, but Rance said the club would handle Cairns’ climate better.

"We didn’t adapt as well as we should have (in Darwin). It was a little bit greasier than we originally thought it would be," he said.

"It made it difficult to handle the ball, but I think definitely this time we’re going to be a lot more prepared for it.

"We sort of know what to expect and have a lot more mechanisms that we can use to combat things like the slipperiness."

The Tigers are also battling a form slump that has seen them drop their past two games against Carlton and Essendon.

Rance said the Tigers’ young playing group was focused on becoming a more consistent unit.

"We’re an improving side, but there are going to be hiccups," he said.

"The positives we have coming out of this season is that our game style does work when we execute it right. The defeats have been good in a way because you can always learn a lot more from your mistakes than you can from a win.

"It’s been a good year in terms of learning a lot, but we’d like to consolidate a bit more form."

The Tigers will be desperate for victory against the Suns to steady their faltering season.

"I think they’ve exceeded a lot of people’s expectations," Rance said of the Suns. ‘‘They’ve got some genuine superstars and it’s going to be a pretty tough match."

The Tigers will hold an open training session at Cazalys from 2.30-3.30pm on Friday. Following that, a free AFL super clinic featuring Tigers and Suns players will be run between 3.30pm and 5pm.
