Crows resigned to losing duo
By Katrina Gill 3:29 PM
Tue 13 Sep, 2011

ADELAIDE is resigned to losing both ruckman Ivan Maric and homesick forward Jack Gunston during next month's AFL exchange period.

Maric is yet to formerly request a trade, but Adelaide expects it will also have to find a new home for the popular big man in the exchange period, which runs from October 10-17.

The 25-year-old was limited to only six appearances for the Crows this season after losing the No.1 ruck spot to ex-Blues rookie Sam Jacobs.

The 77-game Victorian has been strongly linked to Richmond, with Port Adelaide also believed to be interested in securing his services.

Adelaide football operations manager Phil Harper said the club would reluctantly agree to trades for both Gunston and Maric.

"They [Gunston and Maric] are both players we did not want to lose and they had been offered new contracts," Harper told afc.com.au.

"Therefore, we will only be looking at fair and reasonable trades for these players, with the best interests of our club as the main focus."

Maric trade on track

By Kim Hagdorn
13 September 2011 06:17PM EST

Maric will be among a host of big men on the move in what is shaping as some frenzied trading next month.

Brisbane big forward and back-up ruckman Mitch Clark, Carlton's Shaun Hampson and Fremantle's Jonathon Griffin are all being linked with possible trade bargaining.

Maric, 25, looks headed to the Tigers as a late-maturing big man to solve glaring deficiencies around stoppages and team with exciting young on-ballers Dustin Martin and Trent Cotchin and clearances expert Nathan Foley.

Maric is likely to be traded for a second round selection at this year's national draft in November.

He wants to leave the Crows after finishing 2011 and his sixth season on the Crows list behind preferred lead ruckman Sam Jacobs.

The Crows opted for rising key forwards Kurt Tippett and Shaun McKernan at times for brief stints on the ball in support of Jacobs, ahead of more regular ruck chances for Maric.

Tigers management have identified an imported ruck force along with another powerful defender as priority recruiting targets ahead of next season after finishing 12th with eight wins and a draw.

Maric has played 77 Crows games since his debut early into 2006, but made only six appearances this season.

The 200cm and 102kg former Calder Canons ruckman played three games to launch the season and then only Rounds 19-21 to average 11 possessions an outing and around 12 hitouts a game.

Tigers coach Damien Hardwick has identified needs for more aggression and brute force in the stoppages to generate passage for the classy Martin and Cotchin to continue an upward surge toward possible finals next season and beyond.

Maric is considered by Tigers recruiters as an emerging ruckman who could reach his peak of potential in the next few seasons, similar to the late confirmation of capabilities that escalated Melbourne big man Mark Jamar into All-Australian selection at 27 last year.

2nd Rounder  :o I hope that is an over-estimated speculation from Adelaide rather than the agreed terms. I won't be happy if we lose our second round pick for Maric. 3rd round and a player (Nason) would be preferable.

The Crows want more than just a second rounder. They want our/their compo pick we got from them for Tambling back  ::)

Tigers look at Maric for compensation

RICHMOND has opened trade discussions with Adelaide over ruckman Ivan Maric, with the Crows seeking the compensation pick that the Tigers gained by selling Richard Tambling to Adelaide.

Richmond met Adelaide officials over the weekend and talked about Maric, who is out of contract and favours a trade to Tigerland, where he would be given more opportunities and would be favoured to fill the No. 1 ruck position.

It is understood that the Tigers have not yet made any offer to Adelaide. Port Adelaide is another club that may have an interest in Maric, who played just six games this year for the Crows. Maric was behind recruit Sam Jacobs in the ruck pecking order this year, having played 21 games for Adelaide in 2010.

The Crows are believed to have suggested that they should receive back the compensation selection that they traded to the Tigers for Tambling. That selection was compensation for losing Nathan Bock to the Gold Coast and has not yet been utilised by Richmond, which, like most clubs, wanted to wait until the expansion period was concluded and the draft was free of compromises before using the pick.

The Bock selection was an end-of-first-round selection, which would mean it could be between 19 and 23, for the 2012 draft.

The Tigers are keen to secure a ruckman during the trade period and have identified Maric as a low-cost option in terms of money and draft position, compared with the other possibilities.

Maric also is a Victorian, having played his junior football at Keilor and for Calder under 18s.

Maric, while relatively short for a modern ruckman - he is listed at ''only'' 200 centimetres - is aggressive and gives a good contest. He has played 77 games for the Crows since his debut in 2006.

Adelaide's set-up made it difficult for him, since former Carlton ruckman Jacobs was preferred as the main ruck and the Crows can either use 203-centimetre key forward Kurt Tippett, or even 198-centimetre Shaun McKernan in supporting roles, giving greater flexibility in the three-interchange-plus one-substitute system.

Richmond has an excellent forward and second ruck prospect in Tyrone Vickery, who had a breakout season, but the club struggled at centre bounces. Angus Graham and Andrew Browne had opportunities to be main ruckman, without cementing their position in the side.

Talk about dreaming! :rollin

That compo pick is worth far more now given this year's draft is definitely weaker than last year's and we're only 12 months away from it being a end of first round pick in the expected strong 2012 draft. No way is it equal in worth to a fringe player who is their 3rd choice ruckman. This sounds like a ambit claim to eventually settle for and score our 2nd rounder (~pick 37).

He's out of contract so lets just sit it out and wait for the PSD.  Even a secound rounder is pushing it.

I would so a straight swap for Jackson

Hindsight is obviously a wonderful thing in Adelaide  ;D

They gave up pick 20 and now they want it back...it isn't our fault they gave it up in the first place  ;D

Surely Trent West is a better option. Vardy / TommaHawk combination will be at Geelong for a decade and Dawsom Simpson looks lively.

I'd rather West than Maric.

Plus Ottens may go around again.
Go Tigers!

3rd rounder at best for Maric. Done nothing and isnt worth any pick in the top 40 and certainly not the concession pick.

Adelaide paid picks 33 and 67 last year for Sam Jacobs so for them to ask for our end of first round compo pick is laughable. The most they will get is our second rounder which is around pick 37 and even then we are paying over the odds.

It's harder for us to get someone to walk to us for free in the PSD this year as we don't have a early PSD pick. Last year we had pick 2; this year we have pick 6.

1. Gold Coast
2. Port Adelaide
3. Brisbane
4. Adelaide
5. Melbourne
6. Richmond

We would need to frontload his contract on offer to scare off the 5 clubs in front of us.
