Freo won't crumble without Pav: White

RICHMOND'S chance for revenge against Fremantle on Sunday may have been made slightly better by Matthew Pavlich's suspension, but not by much.

The Fremantle skipper has accepted a three-match suspension for bumping Eagle Mitch Brown.

Tigers midfielder Matt White openly admits Pavlich's absence is "a good thing" as his side looks to make amends for a heartbreaking one-point loss to the Dockers earlier in the season, but expects Freo will be able to fill the void.

"It is and it isn't. They haven't played with him for most of the year  … he came back and he's played well in his last few games, (but) they've got soldiers that can replace him pretty easily," White said on Tuesday.

"We're not having a rest knowing that he's not going to play."

White said the Tigers had learnt from the year's earlier contest.

"I think we showed in round five that we can match it with them. To go down by a point …  it was pretty much our own undoing in the last five or 10 minutes of that game."

The selection table

Fremantle – Matthew Pavlich is out for three games through suspension. Freo are expecting Paul Duffield to return in defence, but Luke McPharlin is still a month away. Clancee Pearce (concussion) and Nick Suban (corked leg) will be monitored at training this week.

Richmond – Richmond’s injury list is short, with classy half-back Bachar Houli a possible inclusion after missing the past two games.

Possible line-ups

F:    D Pearce    Z Clarke    M Walters
B:    S Morris    T Chaplin    C Newman

HF:    M de Boer    C Mayne    N Fyfe
HB:    B Houli    A Rance    B Ellis

C:    S Hill    D Mundy    T Mzungu
C:    M White    D Jackson    D Martin

HB:    L Spurr    Z Dawson    G Ibbotson
HF:    S Edwards    T Vickery    N Foley

B:    M Johnson    A Silvagni    P Duffield
F:    R Petterd    J Riewoldt    J King

Ruck:    A Sandilands    M Barlow    R Crowley
Ruck:    I Maric    T Cotchin    B Deledio

INT from:    J Hannath, C Sutcliffe, N Suban, M Taberner, C Pearce, T Sheridan
INT from:    N Vlastuin, S Grigg, R Conca, A Edwards, M Arnot

X Factors

Fremantle – Chris Mayne: Coming off one of the best games he has played for the club, Mayne’s pressure up forward will again be a barometer the entire team will look to equal against a Richmond team that is tough to score against.

Richmond – Bachar Houli: Richmond generates much of it attack from its half-back line, where the brilliant foot skills of Houli are well utilised. The Tigers will hope to regain the defender from injury.

Key Match-ups

Aaron Sandilands v Ivan Maric:
Both big men have been hindered by injury this season, but both are match-winners at their best. Sandilands will be much better for two runs back in the side, while Maric is also picking up form.

Ryan Crowley v Brett Deledio:
Lyon rates Deledio’s ability to hurt the opposition very highly, particularly if he can get goal-side of his opponent. Crowley has been sent to mind the Tiger in all clashes between the sides with Lyon as Freo coach, so expect nothing different on Sunday.

Tendai Mzungu v Dustin Martin:
Mzungu spent time minding dangerous young Eagle Andrew Gaff in the Carlton Mid Derby. He often gets a run-with role on the opposition’s third or fourth best midfielder. Martin has been prolific this season and Lyon could ask Mzungu to go with him.

Alex Rance v Chris Mayne:
Mayne was brilliant against West Coast, and without Pavlich and Ballantyne, he becomes even more key to Fremantle’s forward line against a Richmond defence that ranks fourth in the competition.

Dream Team

Fremantle: That man Michael Barlow again. He scored 122 against Richmond in round 5 and averages 111 against them over the past three.

Richmond: Trent Cotchin has been a little down in fantasy numbers this season, but he has notched scores of 100 and 118 in his past two games and averages 101 against Fremantle.

Keys to victory

Freo will be happy if: Its shutdown players limit the effectiveness of Deledio, Cotchin and Martin. The talented Tiger trio can’t be allowed to dictate terms in the midfield.

Richmond will be happy if: Its fourth-ranked defence gets the better of a Freo forward line missing Pavlich.

dont believe pav played against us in rnd 5 and they still won.

dont get all this jumping for joy at opposition sides having injuries. me id rather play em at full strength then there are no excuses either way. and we know exactly where we stand.
also i reckon the way freo play is better suited to the mcg than subiaco.

I thought we were going to win anyway. Still Lyon will try and make it 6 goals to 5. We need to play well and kick a score they cant reach.
