Let's all look at figures pre 2005 when recruiters were part time. Not comparing apples with apples
All that will have changed is that the recruiters will be getting theri order of merit more accurate, not changing the overall quality of players in the pool. The only real change in later drafts any, would be that the first round picks would be a better rate and the later ones worse, but not by much

Sorry but that example is for the tip and so what if Roos said it doesn't mean it's gospel.Nah it aint gospel, but he did research rather than just pull an opinion out his clacker and then used that knowledge to create a very successful model

If second round ain't worth much to you why weren't you keen on using it on Luke ball? Because at the time, I too would have overrated the value of the pick, because i was ignorant to the info

I'm sure I can find other examples where a second rounder was valued but hey just not in this example. Am I right?
Of course you will always find examples. I can find an example of a player taken at pick 112 that forged a very good 240 game career, but that sort of thing is the the gullible and ignorant. You need to look at the failures as well. There is a reason that adds for lotto only show winners grinning rather than the multitude of people that just gave up their money. Its a deception to give a false image.

If you can provide a better way to quantify the success rate of draft picks I'm more than willing to take notice, and if it shows I'm wrong i will happily change my views again
“For My thoughts are not your thoughts,
Nor are your ways my ways,” says the Lord.

“For as the heavens are higher than the earth,
So are my ways higher than your ways,
And my thoughts than your thoughts."

Richmond recruit Shaun Hampson lucky to be given second chance at high draft price

    Mark Robinson
    From: Herald Sun
    October 08, 2013

SHAUN Hampson is a lucky bloke — and not for the reason you might be thinking. You know, often having brekky with Megan Gale.

At 25, he's played 63 games in seven years for Carlton. At different times, he’s had a failing body, a bad knee, iron hands and a dodgy right foot.

And yesterday he was traded to Richmond for pick No. 28, which might end up being pick No. 32 with free agency compo picks incorporated.

On the surface, it is a staggering decision by the Tigers.

You’d agree to a third-rounder, but a second-rounder is a little too high for a lucky dip.

Try some of these players between drafted between picks 22 and pick 30 in recent years: Jack Darling, Cameron Guthrie, Jack Gunston, Mitch Duncan, Jake Carlisle, Dayne Beam, Jack Redden.

The Tigers are taking punt.

Richmond secured Shaun Hampson by trading pick 28 to Carlton. Picture: Wayne Ludbey

Of course, it helps if you are 201cm and the second ruck at your new club is a 31-year-old journeyman named Orren Stephenson.

Still, Hampson is lucky to have 1) a club prepared to invest so heavily in him and b) the opportunity to make a statement as to what sort of footballer he wants to be remembered as being.

Hampson is good-looking footballer.

He’s tall, he can mark, he can ruck and he can run. The problem is we haven’t seen him doing all of that on a consistent basis.

His past four seasons have returned games tallies of six, 13, nine and eight.

They are not the numbers of a pick No. 28.

Maybe the Tigers, under the astute eye of list manager Blair Hartley, sees something special when other see pedestrian.

In recent years, Hartley identified and landed Bachar Houli, Shaun Grigg, Ivan Maric, Troy Chaplin and Steve Morris.

Hartley went after Hampson soon after Carlton’s season had ended.

He was aware Hampson a problematic posterior cruciate ligament which kept him on the sidelines for most of the year, but the interest was strong.

Talks, a medical, a contract believed to be three years at about $250,000 with added incentives, was all completed, leaving the delicate issue of satisfying Carlton in a trade deal.

So, the Tigers offered No. 28, and the Blues said you had us at hello.

The Blues would never disrespect one of it’s own, but it’s safe to say they wanted the deal as much as the Tigers.

Maybe the Tigers fell in love with Hampson after Round 1 this year.

In that match, Hampson took eight marks, the second highest return in his career, and hounded the Tigers defence.

Clearly, the Tigers have invested in Hamspon and Hampson has to reward that investment.

Promising is Richmond’s ability to improve its players.

When Maric arrived from Adelaide, he had similar poor averages as Hampson. Then Maric blossomed, although this year he battled away with suspect groins, which makes the Hampson deal a little more understanding.

Hamspon will ruck, allowing Ty Vickery to play as a permanent forward, and will play forward which will free up Jack Riewoldt who does get the double-team.

The question is: Can he hold up his end of the bargain?

As for bargains, the Blues think they found one, and will try to use No. 28 to entice Shane Savage from Hawthorn.

Same Robbo that you and others bag constantly for writing crap  ;D

have to say if we've got Hampson for 3 years @ $250k a season with a few incentives thrown in; then on the payments side of it we've done well  ;D

If Carlton use 28 for Savage, then the Hawks make out like bandits IMO.

I'm happy to support Hampson until he has been given some quality time with our coaching staff who will no doubt concentrate on his obvious deficiencies, but it is concerning that his best highlights involve so many shanked shots at goal. He certainly can take a good grab though and if he is over his knee problems then there is hope for him yet.

Don't forget he is there mainly as a ruckman, not a forward.

From what I saw of his ruckwork in the highlights, he can jump and tap to advantage.

We just raped Carlton AGAIN
Port offered them a top ten pick 2 years ago, and they could have got an end of first round pick as compo from GWS when they were after him
This pick will end up being about 35

In 2013, on %, he is the #1 tap ruckman in the AFL. 17% of his hitouts when to his teammates, which is the bset out there.

Firstly, anything Mark Robinson has said can never be used as decent evidence when making your case. Secondly, people are failing to factor in a lot into the trade.

I'm by no means happy, stoked or even pleased that Hampson was traded for our pick 28, however I've considered how well we've done trading and picking spare parts players we've needed over the last 3-4 years, and I can't think of a single dud today and yet ALL came across in circumstances that had me thinking that we've got another Jordy McMahon on our hands.
We're likely to receive a 2nd round or end of 2nd round with White and McGuane leaving - which would essentially replace our traded pick.
Big men take a much longer time to develope - Hampson didn't start playing football until he was 16 (and yet he was taken at #17, obviously incredibly athletic for 200+). Brendon Lade in his ear for a preseason - he'll come on in (pardon the pun) leaps and bounds.
Capped interchange means teams are expected to be playing 2 specialist ruckman, away from the 1 specialist with a pinch hitter (i.e Vickery) we've seen over the last few years. COULD be a master stroke from the tigers, but we'll just have to wait and see. If pick 28-32 ends up being a Hird/Swan/Tippet/Black/Fevola, well, I'll eat my words.

That is encouraging I must say. I'm sure Cotch, Dusty and Co will lap up that sort of delivery.

17% the best out there? Is that true? Seems like a pitifully small number. That means 83% to opposition advantage or undecided. If that is the case why even worry abt a ruckman?

I think that its 17% of all hitouts he contested, not just the ones he got his hands on.

Last 22 games:

19.9 score
387 hitouts
87 marks / 38 contested
46 tackles

Have no idea where that ranks him as a ruck/fwd

But seems like injury and spending too much time up forward are the issues with his development

Blobbo should worry about Essendon and why they can never get any deals done.

We had a target, we got him on day one and our trade week/s are pretty much done.
