I think I read somewhere,  may well have been on this forum, that Hampson only started playing AFL in 2004. If thats the case and the fact that ruckmen generally develop at a slower rate than other positioned players that maybe, just maybe Hartley has realised that his best footy is still ahead of him. Might turn out to be quite an astute pick, a rough diamond I think they call it.

FWIW the Herald-Sun rated the Hampson trade the 14th best (out of the 35) based on value to the Club.

Hampson was stuck behind Matthew Kreuzer at Carlton. He is likely to support Ivan Maric at Punt Road, but that will allow Ty Vickery to play more permanently in attack. And that is where the Tigers may really win.

Would u say the same if maric does his knee five min into the season ?

How do you propose repairing the non benchmark ruck brigade?

Have no issue with recruiting another ruckman for depth as Derickx clearly isn't good enough, just not Hampson and certainly not for Pick 28.

Can't be giving away 2nd round picks in fear of players doing season ending injuries 5 mins into round 1.

If we pick up Hampson we may as well have kept Angus Graham.

Yuck. Trading Graham was the right decision.

“It’s my first time at the Club, meeting with all the coaches, and I really like what they have to say.  I genuinely feel like they can get the best out of me,” Hampson told ‘Roar Vision’.

“Opportunity’s obviously another big reason why I came, and I feel like I can get that here.

“Obviously, big Ivan is a good ruckman, so I think I can give him a chop-out when he needs it, and pinch-hit forward if they need me to as well . . . I’ll do what the Club needs me to do.

“If they want to start big ‘Ivvy’ forward, then I’ll start in the ruck, and vice-versa.  It depends, I guess, who the opponent is and how the match-ups work.”

* Three or four weeks ago, I went in and had a meeting with them and had a look around the Club.  Big Ivan came in on his holidays to show me around. He’s a really nice guy and he asked me what I saw my role as - just another ruckman to free up Vickery and help big Ivan, who’s had a couple of great seasons, out.

* I’ve always treated Ivan with a lot of respect. He’s tough, he’s strong, he can spread forward on you, he’s good. I learned a lot from him and hopefully we can teach each other a few things. We’ve got big Brendon Lade there as well, who’s looking forward to working with us both too.
