I guess on the basis we won't have Maric for about 8 weeks. Inspired decision if you ask me.

Trading a 2nd rounder for this bloke is an inspired decision? Fair enough. ;D

I see him as a better ruck and around the ground player than the big O. He is also better than Longer at the moment. Many were hoping to get Garlett with this choice.  Doesn't look great for him at the moment.
So with Maric's injury, I do think it is an inspired selection.

Valid point although it sounds as if they never anticipated this injury (not that you ever do) and expected him to get through the year so sounds more like a lucky decision than an inspired one. I'm undecided on him as most will acknowledge he has had a poor to somewhat average at times start to his career but he is a giant athletic ruckman who usually come on a bit later in their careers apart from the freaks. Will reserve judgement until a few games into the year

The other thing in his favour is that he took up footy reasonably late. I believe he didn't touch a footy till 2004 and first played in a team in 2005.  This means he still has a lot of improvement left in him.

No. Why?  I'm not saying the guy will be a superstar but he deserves a good chance by the RFC supporters and I am hoping for the teams sake that he can deliver!
From what I saw against Collingwood, there is definitely something to work on.

If he performs better than O it's a win. Maybe not worth 2nd round pick but we'll wait and see

It was a very late 2nd rounder after the comp picks in a weak draft don't forget.

I think its safe to assume that every mature aged player brought to the club is seen as a role player. Like Maric before him, Hampson was starved of opportunities and played out of position due to other players being rated higher than he at his old club. Jacobs was seen as better than Maric, so the Ivan was barely played near the end of his time at the Crows. Did this make him a poor ruckman? Hampson should be awarded the same time and delay in judgement as the Mullet was afforded as he begins his career in the yellow sash.

The Mullet came in and replaced a very weak ruck combination so automatically looked great. He embraced the positivity from our supporters, grew in confidence and became one of the best performed rucks in the league.

When Hartley was searching for a ruck to trade in he was undecided on whether we should target Maric or Hampson. He rated them both and saw them in similar situations at their respective clubs. Both offered different elements to the role but both were statistically strong and under-rated in the football community. We were able to get Maric for less and he was keener to come at that stage so that is why we traded for him first.

Hampson is not an Ablett in a tall mans body, he not a 200cm+ Dangerfield or a ruck version of Pendlebury. He is a tap ruckman who will feed our midfield and compete strongly against the other tall/athletic rucks in the competition. If you are going to judge him, judge him for his rucking. Anything else he gives us is a bonus.
