His tap work is not the problem and never has been, it's his complete lack of presence around the ground. Barely recall seeing him outside a ruck contest until the last quarter. Lost & lazy. Do you ever see him back filling a hole or taking an important mark like Maric does? Harrassing opponents in the midfield? For all his athleticism does he ever use it - taller, faster, more agile than Maric, yet about 1%of the physical presence & work ethic.

You just can't afford to can't afford to carry invisible ruckmen in general play in the modern game. Like an Angus Graham who can win  hit-outs - and that's not a good thing. Hell, at least Graham occasionally got in the way - even if was more often than not of his own teammates.

Injuries were not the only reason a ruckman with such impressive hit-out to advantage numbers was getting left out of his previous club's first 22 so often.

Hampson not an instinctual player. He needs to be coached/told where to go and what to. He needs to be told to stick with the opposition ruckman or crowd the backline or go forward or play up the wing. If he's not he appears to just run around like an under 10's ruck - ball chasing. He'll figure it out and what his role is soon enough.

VIDEO: Hampson's interview post-match ...

* I just loved pre-season, love what the Club’s about – players, staff, coaches, right the way through.  Could not be happier to represent the Club.

* I’ve been brought into the team as backup for Ivvy.  I play forward and help him out when he needs a rest.  But, obviously, big Ivvy’s injured so I’ve taken the No.1 spot  and I’m working my arse off to not let the boys down. I’ve got a full pre-season under the belt, which is good. Always helps going into the season. It’s been tough but a really good one.

Interesting to look back at some of the bile spewed early in this thread.
Hampson has been a godsend (especially in Maric's absence) and played very well against the Suns.
Damn glad to have him at Richmond. :thumbsup

I had a dream last night that he did one of those little behind his head taps and it went straight to Murphy who was standing there by himself  :banghead

How? Can get his hands on it in the ruck but does nothing else. Maric in Hampson straight out (when Maric has recovered)

If Maric can leap. Hampson at least can.

Should consider playing them both. But I want to see more of Griff.

Think he is going really well at the minute!

I agree and think he is growing in confidence too. Warnock usually smashes us in the ruck but Hampson was out jumping him and at least bringing it to ground. Warnock would typically win the hit outs against Maric but also put it straight down the throat of his midfielders. Against Hampson he may have got his hand to the ball but he could place it like he usual has in the past.

Still need to clunk more marks but will compliment Maric well in the center duels and around the ground. I do worry that Griffiths will be pushed aside when Maric returns as I actually feel that Griff offers more around the ground than either of the other two.

agree. i wouldnt go so far as to say great but hes been pretty decent. he wasnt bought to the club to be better than maric it just aint going to happen.

we got him to give ivan a decent chop out while remaining competetive at ruck contests.that we have been so far without ivan. we got him to be that big third tall target when ivan is playing..

to me theres two or three  possibilities that can happen when ivan is fit.
hampson plays the 2ndruck/third tall role and griffiths is dropped. or griffiths is retained and he forces one of vickery or riewoldt out as a kpf. athird possibility could be we play all three and rotate one from the bench at all times.

interesting times ahead id say.

Would personally drop him from the side when maric is fit.

Hampson is serviceable. Yet in would rate the forward trident of Tyrone/ jack/Griffith as more important and the partnership should not be disrupted.

Some teams are playing 3 ruck man, so its not impossible all five play. Throw in mcbean and it is confusing
