* It’s been great to be back and out on the track today. The first day obviously the boys came in pretty excited.

* I obviously didn’t have that long this year.  The rookie draft last year was the start of December, so I had a fair bit of time. I did some running with my uncle [Olympic runner Pat Scammell] and his son Jack. So hopefully that puts me in good stead. My running is always going to be a focus for me. So I’ll be working closely with Burgey [Richmond’s Physical Performance Manager Peter Burge] and the fitness staff to be able to improve my aerobic base.

* I can play Round 1 hopefully, if selection warrants it.  Last year I was on the rookie list and had to wait for an injury. I’m really excited, particularly to be part of the group hopefully leading into Round 1.

While I agree with the sentiment, I would be looking more closely at the midfield or stoppage coaches.
You would presume the reserves/development coaches were pushing for his selection but a stoppage coach who ignored him while not having Jackson and used Thomas instead really needs to look at his ideas.

I think we are being a little unfair on the coaches re miles.I don't know how true the rumours were ,but wasn't their question marks early on regarding his training,if true maybe that's what held him back
