That result just makes me angry more than anything.  The side that won today is the one that made the finals last year playing the same style of football.  We looked fast, skilful and committed, and outran and outlasted the supposed fittest side in the AFL.  So why did it take until Round 17 to start playing the same proven style of football that took us to a whisker of the top 4 last year?  The playing list is almost identical so what has suddenly changed to make the players run forward, pressure their opponents and take the game on?  I can't help but think the coaching group have committed a serious crime on themselves and the team by trying to change the gameplan over the summer and it's taken them this long to admit it and make the change back.  Jack was spot on with his comments earlier in the year and rather than castigate him publicly, Hardwick should have stepped past his ego and listened to what was being said.  Who knows, we might have been able to resurrect the season back then, instead of making ourselves look like foolish imposters by playing so crap and then suddenly turning it all around.  Gold Coast, Bulldogs, Melbourne and North Melb are just 4 games I can think of that we would have won easily playing that style and we would then be sitting in the 8 instead of planning Sept holidays.   :banghead :banghead :banghead :banghead :banghead :banghead :banghead

Add the Sydney game and we'd be 11 and 5 with reasonable % and level with Port.

The game plan changes from quarter to quarter at least today it didn't alter even when Port looked like running over us in the third when from 3 shots Pittard kicked out, Schulz missed and I can't remember the third who kicked OOTF all in quick succession. Yes I can't feel but hollow given what we have been given and what we got today. When it mattered we couldn't produce this against a top 4-6 opponent but when it seems futile out comes this. Staggering. :help

Me too. Was interesting to hear both Jack and Chaplin say we built this game up like it was a Grand Final. My question is why ?  Where was that commitment to the contest against Melbourne after Hafey died ? Where was it against The Bulldogs , Gold Coast etc etc ?
Sydney , Hawthorn and Geelong for eg just bring it every week regardless. Those sides have all achieved the ultimate success a few times recently and we've achieved nothing !  The fire should be burning in our guts but it isn't.
There is something intrinsically wrong at Richmond if we need to build a game up as a Grand Final to win it.

6 weeks ago is when Miles had his first game.  We lost Tuck last year thanks to Hardwick.  We were devoid of in and under players the first half of the season.  Impossible to win if you don't get the footy.  A little oversight from the coaching department.  We would take another step forward if we had Arnot in there getting the ball with him.

But for Tuck's treatment and the stupidity of not playing Miles from round 1, we should have played in at least three final series since Hardwick joined the club.

Agreed Smokey but I think they changed tact about 6 weeks ago and it is only now that we are starting to see the benefits.

I still believe the reason we performed so poorly early in the season was due to opposition teams figuring us out. They knew that if they closed down our space around stoppages that we would stagnant and turn the ball over. Port plays a game similar to us and like to create space themselves around contests in which they back their quick midfielders to spread and run into. We won the contested ball and used this space ourselves. Other teams have been more defensive on us and played a game of attrition and pressure in which we have folded.

We are now starting to win the contested ball again with (someone said this earlier) the inclusion of Miles and Maric. This has given us more freedom and allowed our outside midfielders more ball. This is why Ellis has stepped up recently. Add a fit Jackson to the side and you start to win more stoppages and therefore games.

I don't think you can under-rate the loss of Maric from the start of the year. He puts the ball down to our advantage, creates space with blocks and works tirelessly around the ground. Hampson did none of these.

Hardwick tried to 'tweak' the game plan this year but this failed. It made us more stagnant and reduced our run. Lesson learned I hope.

Its a shame that we are performing better now when we no longer can make the finals but we will take this form into next year which is more important than moving up a couple of places with our the draft selection imo

Hmmm maybe ? Didn't work out like that after our strong finish in 2008. Coach was sacked six weeks into 2009  ;D

They won because they put in a team effort & took the game on. Conca was a big loss for us with his attacking & tackling. They were prepared to do things different & it all payed off for a excellent win. Yes EXCELLENT. That's the type of football l like watching & every supporter should enjoy it over the next 2 weeks before we take on West Coast which l believe we can win.
The best part is Ports ability to outrun sides & score quickly. They are one of the quickest from end to end as you can see they caught us out several times but we also stopped them playing on their terms & we controlled the game for most of the day with hard pressure football.
Morris still does some dumb things but then he can do some courageous things. Still alot of work to be done but another season of building & l reckon they will be a strong outfit. Lets see what the West Coast game brings but lets enjoy a great win for all concerned.
