This year: Nank in the ruck = Dusty’s best football
Are you really going to try and say Dusty’s year this year is better than 2017?

Soldo on SEN last night:

“You’re always learning every game but it’s more the excitement, it’s pretty surreal,” he said.

“You get confidence in every game.

“Nerves do kick up… but it’s more the excitement of doing something that I love.”

If the opportunity presents, the third-year Tiger is ready for the challenge of finals football.

“Finals footy is pretty contested. I think my fitness is one thing that I tried really hard in pre-season to get to the standard,” he said.

“Being a ruckman, you’re always at every contest…so that’s going to be key focus area for me.”

The basketball convert, who is the cousin of former Richmond ruckman Ivan Maric, recently signed on for a further two years at the Club.

Ivan Soldo relishing AFL finals chance with Richmond

Caden Helmers
Canberra Times
September 5, 2019

Few could blame Ivan Soldo if the eye of the Tiger was beginning to drift towards the final Saturday in September.

But the 23-year-old Richmond ruckman is refusing to take any of his maiden AFL finals campaign for granted.

Soldo doesn't want to fall into a cycle of regurgitating tired old cliches in a code dominated by them - but the looming return of premiership ruckman Toby Nankervis means he can do little else than worry about the job at hand.

Right now that is Richmond's qualifying final showdown with the Brisbane Lions at The Gabba on Saturday night.

There is little evidence to say he cannot rise to the task - he has done it this year when Richmond needed someone to fill the void in the middle during Nankervis' absence.

"It all just starts from VFL. You play games there to get ready for AFL, and with Toby out, the team needed someone who could do the job," Soldo said.

"It hasn't been easy at all, it has had its challenges. It has been a great experience, we've finished top three so the team is in great form heading into the finals.

"The job isn't done yet. Every week has been a new week for the team and myself. I don't really look at the end result at the moment, I'm looking at the next week.

"It is quite a cliche, but it has just been so constant, it's pretty exciting. We'll see over the next four weeks whether it has sunk in or not. We'll see what the end result is.

"Everyone is in pretty good spirits at the moment but there is a big job ahead."

Richmond are planning to take two ruckmen into the qualifying final against the resurgent Lions should Nankervis pass the Tigers' main training session with flying colours on Thursday.

Tigers coach Damien Hardwick says incumbent ruckman Soldo's "terrific" form will see him hold onto his place for a maiden finals appearance after he earned a two-year contract extension in what the Canberra export dubbed a make or break year in his career.

Richmond have hit form at the back end of the season to reaffirm their premiership credentials - but the hype around Punt Road isn't stemming from the looming finals series.

"I don't know if you saw the VFL score, but it's been all about that. It was unbelievable, their comeback, it was pretty inspiring," Soldo said.

Nankervis has battled groin issues since round eight but put his hand up for an AFL recall after leading the club's reserves side to a stirring win after trailing by 40 points at the main break.

Now Soldo is desperate to link up with Nankervis for the seventh time in his career - and the first time since 2017.

"It's been a couple of years since Toby and I have played together. I'm pretty excited because he is a great player and he played a terrific game in the VFL," Soldo said.

"He's back to playing at almost 100 per cent capacity and he is a premiership ruckman, so he is a valuable asset to the team.

"I'm not too sure what the coaches will decide. We've obviously got Noah Balta, Mabiol Chol and Callum Coleman-Jones who have all rucked this year, and then there is Toby and myself.

"So there is five right there that are healthy enough to play, and it's all up to the coaches now. Whoever does play, I'm sure the coaches will have enough faith in those players."

Soldo seizing his moment (Age)

Soldo seizing his moment

Daniel Cherny
The Age
18 September 2019

Soldo was the archetypal project player when he signed with Richmond in mid-2014, having been connected to Tigers recruiters by his cousin, then-Richmond ruckman Ivan Maric, whose mum Stef is Slav’s sister.

As has been well-documented, Soldo had been a talented junior basketballer and also played soccer growing in Canberra, where his parents still live. He’d never played a game of footy.

Yet little over five years since signing with the Tigers as a Category B rookie, Soldo is holding down Richmond's No. 1 ruck spot, and is two wins away from becoming an AFL premiership player.

“It sounds like a cliche, but it just happened so quickly,” Soldo told The Age this week, reflecting on his journey.

Having made his debut in 2017, Soldo only became a senior regular in the back half of this season. But it doesn’t mean he’s been copping more attention around the streets of Melbourne.

“I always get noticed because I’m 6-foot-8. I’m used to people looking at me," he said.

“I don’t really take notice of who knows I’m a footy player.”

So what has been the hardest part about the transition to footy? Mastering the drop punt? Learning ruck craft?

“At the club we’ve had some ruckmen come through who have all helped me in some way. Shaun Hampson was here, Ivan Maric my cousin, Orren Stephenson, Ben Griffiths. They’ve all passed on a little bit of their knowledge.

“They were very supportive. For them to step outside themselves and help me, I’ll be forever grateful.”

The biggest challenge, Soldo found, was one of attitude.

“Probably the hardest thing might be just the lifestyle of being a professional player, a professional athlete," he said.

"It was always just something I like doing, getting outside playing sports. When it became a job, that’s the hardest thing everyone has to adapt to.

“You’re up early, you’re training hard. There’s no such thing as a sick day.

“That’s what the best AFL teams are like, they work hard and all pre-season it’s a bit of a grind.”

Occasionally Soldo questions the point of it all, before reality dawns.

“You’ve got to look back and think, ‘why am I doing this?’ You can walk away. If you don’t want to do it, you don’t have to do it. Nothing’s easy in life. Even my times playing Playstation FIFA, I hate it at times, but you still love it so you keep playing.”

The enormous Tiger is making his mark. He’s played 12 senior games this year, holding the fort while Toby Nankervis was out through injury, and then keeping his position when Nankervis returned for the finals.

Soldo has also provided an ingenious flourish. Unable to tap the ball at a boundary throw-in late in the season, he decided to use his head. Literally.

“I just make stuff up, I guess,” Soldo said of his creative moment.

“I think just instincts kick in. Against Brisbane at the MCG in round 23, it was going to hit me in the face. I felt my arms were tied up.

“I think we just laugh about it and move on. The old-school footy players don’t like it, but nowadays you’ve just got to improvise.”

While he is innovative in one respect, Soldo is also something of a throwback, having grown a moustache since mid-season. Nev has had a mo for as long as Ivan can remember, so Soldo jnr decided to make the most of his dad's genes.

Not that he thinks he’s fooling anyone with a tough-guy look.

“No, they soften up for me!," he laughs.

Noah Balta and Mabior Chol have both had extended stints in the AFL this year, with both playing hybrid forward/ruck roles. With Soldo in the middle, Nankervis is also spending more time than usual close to goal.

Soldo wouldn’t mind extending his repertoire, but thinks that coach Damien Hardwick is happy with the status quo.

“I think 'Dimma' just wants to leave me in the midfield group. I’d love to go forward, even just rest up forward. I’ll just keep playing my role.”

Given his ability to pick up new skills, you wouldn’t put it past Soldo to make it inside 50 down the track.

Amazing how much Soldo has improved. Never thought he'd ever become our first ruck in QF & PF wins. Credit to him for all his efforts to improve so dramatically and get to this stage. From memory he only took up footy seriously at 15.

Hard to believe that soldo had more impact than nank. Soldo was huge. Both will have their work cut out for them if pies beat giants and Grundy is on

Soldo was great. Hope the few remaining silly heads can open their eyes and see that now.

I wouldn't play Nank next week. He looked unfit, slow, and a liability going back with Rat into defense.

Would be keen to see if any of Balta or Chol put their hand up tomorrow
